I'm not the under dog anymore - John Christie Have you ever wondered why some people will put their life on the line for sport? It is not for the popularity or fame that often comes with a great achievement. Athletes, true athletes, love their sport unconditionally. They love the feel of the football fit perfectly in their hand, or the sight of the soccer ball headed straight toward their opponents goal. This is how I feel about snowboarding, this unconditional love. I call it unconditional because, if I broke my neck snowboarding tomorrow, I would still love the sport. Snowboarding has changed my life. It has given me numerous experiences, each of which has molded my personality, and made me who I am today. Snowboarding has taken me to places so beautiful it would be a sin to try and describe them in words. It has led me to meet new friends, and has distanced me from old ones. Since the first time I went snowboarding, I have felt a certain bond with the mountain, an almost spiritual bond. When I am up on the mountain, my senses are heightened, and I am more aware of my surroundings. I notice every detail, every snowflake, every miniscule rivet in the snow. I have had my share of injuries, most snowboarders have. Most injuries can be healed within a period of time. The only injury I fear is a broken neck. I have a friend that broke his neck and is paralyzed from it. It is not so much the broken neck I fear, but the thought of never being able to snowboard again. The thought of losing the feeling I get when I am soaring down the mountain is too much to bear. No matter how many injuries I get, no matter how many friends I lose. I will always love snowboarding, it has changed my life in so many ways. It is more than just a sport, it is a way of life, it is part of who I am. Think "out of the box". |
