Quinta Quijote

Quinta Quijote has good winds pretty much year round and we'll be using those winds to power our finca. This system has been in the planning stages for many years as it has taken some time to assemble everything we need. Our Bergey windmill was bought from a dealer in country and still took almost two months to get through Customs.

Alternate energy systems are popular enough here for there to be four stores in Managua and we were able to comparison shop on every other necessary item. Besides the windmill, an inverter and some deep cycle batteries were needed, and we got to give these a trial run at the rental house in town. For now, four deep cycle batteries have been sufficient for our needs in Jinotepe, but on the finca we'll be using a total of 20.

One of the last things the builder accomplished in 2007, before the heavy rains kept more supplies from being hauled in, was to plaster the electric room. This room had been built by the first crew of workers we hired and was rather homely. The builder fixed it up and now it just needs a few coats of white paint (sealer first, of course) and it'll be time to put in shelving for the electric batteries.

The site for the windmill is just east of the electric room and so far four holes have been dug for the anchors. Rebar cages were made and concrete is currently being poured and watered daily to slowly cure. Roger couldn't help but write the date in the new cement, 1-30-08!

The next step in this project is getting flanges delivered to our metal worker in Nandaime so that he can begin constructing the 100 foot tilt-up tower we'll be using. The tower will be made from 4" schedule 40 steel pipe which we found on sale in the local paper, La Prensa.
