The first project we tackled was the stable as that building is made up of the electric room, the 20,000 gallon water tank, and the 1,000 square foot rain water collecting roof. Using local workers, Roger supervised every aspect of the project from buying materials to teaching the laborers the meaning of hard work by example. It took several tries but we finally found a builder from Nandaime that we could work with and his practiced block-laying skills brought the stable together quickly.

Once the room for the batteries and pumps was completed, and the water tank as well, it was time for the roof. Our builder had done rooves before but never quite this big. Aged clay tiles can be quite heavy and extra braces were necessary. The rafters are made from pine, but we used a warm weather black walnut, Nogal, for the 4"x4" braces that should hold up to the worst rain Mother Nature can dish out. That's the plan, anyway!

The first big finca project, if you don't count all that land clearing, was just about finished up by mid May of 2007. Our builder fashioned gutters out of galvanized sheet metal shortly after, and we scratched one huge project off our list.
