Quinta Quijote

Last updated 6/22/08 Our Home & Blog Page

This site will be dedicated to the ins and outs of building in Nicaragua. As progress occurs on our homesite, I will update with the inevitable misadventures. For those new to our site, we've purchased two fincas near the Ochomogo River, just 10 minutes south of Nandaime. The name of our little part of paradise is Quinta Quijote and and we are anxious to get our windmills up.

We're building a self-sufficient finca, completely off grid, and have accomplished quite a few of our projects so far. There's only a thousand or more to go (maybe it just feels like it?) and then we'll be in homesteading bliss! You can find out more about our building adventures and misadventures in Nicaragua by clicking the links on the left. Check out my blog for daily craziness on Nicaragua's isthmus.

2005 saw the realization of our homesteading dream when we purchased land in this gorgeous Central American country. We spent a year looking for just the right piece for us and found it in the wilds of Ochomogo. The land was mostly semi dry tropical rain forest, chock full of brambles, thickets and some seriously dangerous-looking thorns. There was an existing well with water 18' down, no electricity lines for miles in any direction, and lots of wind coming across the isthmus from Lake Nicaragua. With only 6 feet from the highest to lowest points on the land, it looked like a blank canvas just waiting for our ideas. At least it would be a canvas once we got all those brambles out of the way!

Three years later, our homestead has started to emerge from the tropical surroundings.
