Selena, a small biography
Selena Quintanilla was born in the freeport community hospital in Brazosport Texas and spent the first couple of years of her life in Lake Jackson, Texas. From a very early age her father, Abraham Quintanilla JR. noticed Selena had an undisputable talent for singing. From that moment on Abraham incouraged his youngest to keep doing what she was good at. He started what was in the beginning just a family band with Selena on vocals, her brother A.B. on bass, her sister Suzette behind the drums and he would usually play along with the guitar. Playing covers of the most known country like songs and early rock and pop songs, Selena y los Dinos, then called Southern Pearl made their first step into the music business. A second step was to get rid of Selena's shyness to go on stage. Abraham would encourage his youngest to make small performances to family and friends just to make her get used to a podium and to get rid of her fear of it all. And it worked.
As a student, Selena has always been an example of how every other student should be. As far as grades went, she never came home with less then an A or a B. However sometimes Selena would get in the hair of some of her teachers, the principal and her father for that matter. As every other kid, Selena loved to try out her limits of how far she could go with everyone, that was not otherwise in School. When Selena was in 1st grade, a teacher got mad at Selena because, for a dare, Selena had swirled her skirt up higher then what was allowed. Already at such a young age, Selena found it impossible to turn down a dare, something that would remain in her for the rest of her life. Also another story of her life in school was that, during lunch breaks or regular breaks, Selena would go to the 7-11 store to buy things to decorate her pencils with and to buy candy which she would sell to the other members of her class or to
other schoolmates. Abraham nor the principal were very happy with this but it was a sign of Selena's eye for business. She would also decorate the pencils and sell those as well. Selena stopped regular schooling in 8th grade and last attended as a regular student in West Oso middle school. She stopped with normal classes because her schedule of being on the road often meanth that she would miss a school day on Monday or Friday so Abraham decided it would be best for Selena to take school at home. And so she did, Selena took
every class a normal student would have and graduated. Another thing Selena did while following these courses was sewing fringes on her clothes. Her home economics teacher once told a story about selena loved keeping herself busy sewing fringes and other things to her clothing and that Selena liked it best when her clothes moved with her.
As in her personal life, Selena would have her pains and fortunes. Selena's father opened up a Mexican restaurant in 1981 called Papagayo's. Selena y los dinos got some stage performances there but it didn't take long before the restaurant was bankrupt mostly because of the bad economy. Abraham had quit his job at the Dow Chemical plant to work in his restaurant and now he was left without any money and without a job. This caused the family having to move in with Selena's uncle hector. In the period of time she lived with that uncle, Selena learned to realise the value of money and that of a tight family. Selena y los dinos started making music professionally to put food on the table and at age 9, Selena was already on the road. Playing at birthday parties, weddings, quinceaneras and other events, the family managed to stay together and making a little bit of money. Although they had little succes (at one venue they even had food thrown to the stage), the Quintanilla family decided to stay on the road and make their
complete income out of touring.
When Selena was at the age of 10-11, She got very much into fashion. She would make designs of her own and she would dream about one day opening up a boutique where people could buy her specially designed clothes. She started creating own designs for the costumes the dinos would wear onstage and she would redo her own clothes to make them look more like authentic Selena fashion. Her own designs and special addings to the outfits would make Selena y los dinos get the title of 3rd best dressed group in 1994. A year in which Selena would also make her dreams come true. Selena etc. was opened in Corpus Christi, Texas and another etc. was opened in San Antonio Texas. Selena also had a 3rd company called Selena design house INC. Her clothing, charictarised by the colorful wear and the Selena bustiers spawned great successes. In 1995 plans were already being made for her to open up a 3rd boutique. This one outside the borders of the US. Monterrey was also interested in Selena. Better yet, they wanted to have something of Selena in their home town. In 1995, plans were being made for a new boutique in Monterrey Mexico. A step Selena had always dreamt of…not only in fashion but also in music. A story about the Corpus Christi boutique is that Selena did the planting and the wiring herself. The landscapers couldn't do the job on time so Selena made her hands durty and did it herself to get everything set up on time for the opening. When the electricians called to say they were going to be late, Selena started drilling all the holes and starting laying out the wires.
Selena y los dinos kept getting invited to bigger venues and events. They were invited to play a song at the Tejano music award in 1985; selena was only 14 at the moment. Abraham also found the family a new house in Corpus Christi. Selena was very happy in Corpus. So
happy that, after some time, Selena started calling Corpus christi her 2nd mothertown. And Corpus Christi also appreciated Selena.
In 1989 Selena was introduced to their a new member of the band. Roger Garcia left los dinos and was now to be replaced by Christopher Gilbert Pérez. Longer for Chris Pérez. She was introduced to him by fellow female tejano singer and friend Shelly Lares. Shelly and Selena had a long history together always being opposed to one another at the TMA's and other tejano award shows. They had become good friends and Chris had been part of Shelly's band until 1989 and then switched bands to be a Dino. Selena and Chris would become good friends…very good friends actually as they married in 1992. A marriage no one had seen coming. They eloped and from April 2nd, Selena could also be called ms. Pérez. Abraham in the beginning was not very happy with this marriage but soon realised that his daughter was perfectly happy with him, eventhough they only dated for about 8 months.
Selena's fanbase widened and she got more success…and it got more busy for her. Performing at as many places as humanly possibly she still found the time to take neighborhood walks every day and to accept neighborhood kids to stay at her house. She was very loved by the community. Not only was she a spokesperson for abused women but she also made some adds for Agree shampoo, AT&T, D.A.R.E. and some other thing but she also loved coming to community events or schools to explain everyone the importance of a good education and staying in school.
Late 1991, Selena was contacted by a fan named Yolanda Saldivar to make a fanclub. Selena, who was already thinking of such a thing, accepted it and so a fanclub, based out of San Antonio was created. Yolanda and Selena would become good friends in the next couple of years until her death in 1995 when Yolanda was the one who pulled
the trigger. First being accused of stealing money and important documents made Yolanda desporate and she purchased a Taurus .44 model handgun around March12-14, just 2 weeks before she would use that gun to kill Selena. This day would forever be called "black friday" by the fans of Selena. That cloudy, even rainy day, March 31st Selena went to the days inn Motel to retrieve important documents and to take Yolanda to a hospital. She said she had been raped by 2 men in Monterrey and that she needed medical attention so Selena took her to a near hospital where nothing was found. Back in the motel, the women argued and Yolanda retrieved a gun from her purse first pointing it to her head after that to Selena who ran away. Yolanda shot Selena and hit her in the carotic artery of the right shoulder, the bullet also pierced a lung. Selena was pronounced dead at 1.05 PM. From that moment on, Yolanda would keep the police at the parking lot for another 9 and a half hours before she was arrested. From that moment on Selena Quintanilla Pérez lived on to be the legend she is today.
Before that day, Selena had signed with SKB worldwide records to start making an English album, also one of Selena's dreams. She had already signed in 1993 however her busy schedule only allowed her to start hitting the studios for the english tracks in 1995. Selena was very happy with the opportunity but she wasn't going to let her Spanish fans slip away as she decided she was going to come out with a new Spanish album after she came out with the album that would later become the posthumous Dreaming of you. However not yet fully completed, Dreaming of you has the english tracks sung by Selena just weeks if not days before her death. It has already sold millions of copies and Selena is still big market news for the Latin music Market. She has won a golden eagle award in 2001 (posthumous)
for the good influence she has had on millions of Latinos throughout the world and she was the only female latina ever to win such
prestigious award.
Selena the movie is also making sure of the legacy of Selena. Now people throughout the entire world (non latinos and people who don't even know spanish) get to know Selena and Selena is in their hearts as well. People from Europe, Asia and other continents are getting to know her music, soft personality and bright smile and are making sure her legacy will never be forgotten by letting their community know what kind of a person she was and what kind of music she brings.

Selena fue muy feliz con la oportunidad pero con ella no iba a permitir que sus admiradores españoles se escabullan como ella decidió que ella iba a salir con un nuevo álbum español después de que ella saliera con el álbum que posterior llegaría a ser el Soñar póstumode usted. Sin embargo todavía no completamente completado, Soñando de usted tiene los admiradores ingleses cantados por Selena apenas semanas si no días antes de su muerte. Ya ha vendido millona de copias y Selena es las noticias de mercadotecnia todavía grandes para el Mercado latino de la música.
