INTRODUCTION

The name QUALTROUGH originates in the Isle of Man.  It means "son of Walter" and is a contraction of "McWalter". There are variants in spelling including McWhaltrough, Qualtro, Qualter and Qualters (although not all Qualter/Qualters go back to QUALTROUGH. Some are of Irish origin).   An anglicised version of the name is Wat(t)erson. More information on the name's origin can be found at Origin of the Name page

The book, A QUOTA OF QUALTROUGHS - early settlers to New Zealand from the Isle of Man, written and published in New Zealand in 1984 by Elizabeth Barlow (now Feisst) & Joy McDougall gives narrative and genealogical information as known at the time and this subsite updates from there, using the genealogical chart numbers used in this book as the basis for the genealogies here.

Research into the Qualtrough genealogy began in 1978 and is ongoing. Therefore this site will be changing frequently as more information comes to light, and corrections and alterations are made. Contributions have been made by many researchers over the years and gratitude is expressed to all who have shared their information so willingly.

Accuracy of material cannot be guaranteed and is open to discussion or comment at any time. Please contact elizabeth@qualtrough.org.

The music file playing on some of the pages on this site is "Ellan Vannin" , the Manx national song, recorded by the Bee Gees and sung by Robin Gibb.  Robin, Barry and Maurice Gibb were, of course, born in the Isle of Man.  Their version of the Manx national song was recorded in 1998 and first sung at Wembley Stadium, London that year.
