quite interesting

12 October 2008

  • New transcript: Series 5, Episode 11.
    Thanks to Ian!
  • Sorry for the lack of updates. A new term, a new kind of science determined to kill me (this time, organic chemistry).
    My one QI-related class triumph of note thus far: After initially blanking on the meaning of the root of the word ἀπότομός (which meant, in context, "sheer", as in a sheer drop; the root is -tom-) in Herodotus class, I was prompted by my professor to think of an ap-pen-dec-TOM-y . . . bizarrely, of course, the same word that Stephen used in 1x04 to demonstrate the meaning of the words "atom" and "tmesis". No one has ever shouted "to cut!" as loudly and suddenly as I then did.

  • New transcript: Series 5, Episode 5.
    Thanks to Amanda!
  • I have three transcripts almost ready to go, from Ian, Joe, and Vanessa . . . They'll go up in the unlikely event that I survive my physics final exam.

12 March 2008

  • Inconsequential updates of the About page, featuring photos that aren't more than a year old, age updates (happy yesterday-birthday to me), and slight bio reworking. Yes, I know, you want me to get on the bloomin' transcripts. There are more in queue.

    Thanks to Nick!
  • And it's annotated, thanks to a free hour I had this morning. In physics class.
    ("Miss, she's transcribing in the back row, miss!")

  • New template! I thought it was about time.
  • If you're lucky, there are about three transcripts coming in the near future. Bear with me.
  • 1x01 - Now features a transcription style that I think I might slowly begin to convert the others to, unless I get overwhelming "I hate it" response.
    The change is for several reasons, and for once, I'm not going to expose my pedantry here.
  • I have not been distracted from my work by this man.

26 November 2007

  • This is hardly an update (and it's all schoolwork's fault), but since I spent about three precious hours annotating 5x02, I thought I should at least share that I've done it.

  • The site's main page has reached 10,000 hits! I'm pretty sure that 9,000 of them were me, but nonetheless, that's a good milestone for a little site.
  • Non-updates: It's all schoolwork's fault. I apologize. These next few months are going to be very busy for me as well, but I'm going to try to stay on top of things, especially since series 5 comes out in the autumn (eep).
  • However: I am continuing to work on annotations, and don't always update when I do. Not that I can expect people to go searching around for them, but they're coming.

22 June 2007

  • New transcript: Series 2, Episode 5.
    I have to say that I'm excessively proud of it. I don't have memory of ever doing a more difficult transcript, and I think it turned out well.
  • I'm also starting the slow process of annotating the transcripts. You can see it on 2x05, 3x01, 3x02, and a few other ones have incomplete notes. When there's something relevant I think would be interesting to add to the episode, I've made a link within the text to the bottom of the page, where you can see things like just how well I know Stephen Fry's novels (answer: rather). It's a bit difficult to do between-episode similarities when I don't have a completed transcript for one or both of the episodes, but I hope that'll be rectified soon. In the meantime, check it what's been done.
  • This is not really that new, but I'm almost making an effort to put up pertinent screencaps when they're called for. The original plan was to give everyone an option between the text-only transcript and a very image-heavy transcript. Until that happens, I think I've struck a good compromise. It's infinitely better to see Jimmy Carr's letterboard, for instance, than to read some lame text about cats and Smarties tubes.
  • Heleen, loved the email. Keep on introducing your fellow countrymen to Stephen Fry. My work on that particular endeavor is made easier only because I can say, "Do you watch House?" and slowly build on that connection. It's proven rather successful.

  • HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY, QITRANSCRIPTS.COM!! Click for more . . .
  • New transcript: Series 1, Episode 7.
  • To the one person (as far as I know) who emailed Dorothy, kudos to you. She promised me that she would get to work; let's see if she means it. Your name was cut off when she forwarded the message to me, and in true Dorothy form, she never followed up with actually telling it to me, so I can only say "thank you" and direct it to Belguim with love.

  • New transcript: Series 2, Episode 8.
    Thanks to Michael!
  • Edited the About page to give more credit where credit is due.
  • Does anyone really read this page? If so, dear perusers of the Updates page, I have a favor to ask of you. I have a good friend named Dorothy. She and I met in Ancient Greek class when she just happened to be reading Paperweight (for the uninitiated, that's a book by someone you just might have heard of) in the row in front of me. After I introduced her to QI, she proudly claimed 2x02 . . . back in October. From what I've heard, she's spending her free time listening to "Quote . . . Unquote" and crash-coursing herself through guitar lessons to live up to the name of her relative, the great Chet Atkins. (That's well and good, Miss Atkins, but I don't see any transcribing going on.) I might just be tempted to give away her email address and see how many new people she gets chided from. Please don't hesitate. I'll get a phone call soon enough if it gets out of hand. (And it won't, because . . . Cough. No one reads this page.)

    --which is why I can put up irrelevant pictures of Dorothy and me for the simple reason that it's 5:30 am and I've so many things I should be doing instead.

  • Standardized the formatting for Series 1 and 2, which is a bigger job than it sounds, especially since I think I'm the only one whom it was bothering. Nonetheless, I can tell you that:
  1. the spaces between the ellipses are now non-breaking (hurrah!);
  2. dashes are flush to the characters on either side;
  3. superfluous viewscreens have been obliterated (hurrah hurrah!);
  4. quotation marks (or inverted commas, perhaps) and apostophes are (although the terminology is making me hesitate) "straight" instead of "smart" (oh, dear);
  5. periods (or full stops, perhaps) now designate sentences even when sentences end with [an action];
  6. ellipses have largely replaced endless dashes when panellists stutter or repeat;
  7. and "uh's" and "um's" have been morphed into "er's" and "erm's" . . . except for when it's Rich Hall, whose filler words are as American as he is.

    Again, I fully appreciate that I'm the only one who cares. But then, it's my website. So there.

  • Updated Links section to include The QI Blog.
  • Changed the template for no reason at all other than the fact that I wanted the gosh darned banner on top. (The banner, by the way, has been slightly revamped as well.) I'm sort of lamenting the lack of blueness in this template, but until I drop everything and learn CSS, I'll just deal with it. I've also put all of the links to transcripts onto one page for easier navigation, because I'll eventually be using the navbar for other things QI-related, not just transcripts. (If I get around to it!)

  • New transcript: Series 1, Episode 5.
  • Believe me, I'm wincing at the gap of time between this transcript and the last one. There are two more in the oven and almost ready for presentation. What better way to spend Christmas break in the Philippines than sapping the neighbor's wi-fi and transcribing QI, eh?

1 October 2006

  • New feature: Links page.
  • Also, season 2, episode 11 should be up soon. (Sorry, Joe!)
  • And can you say, "HURRAY FOR A NEW SEASON OF QI!"?

Update on template and banner:
    I spent you-don't-want-to-know-how-long creating a kick-ass cool banner for the site, only to discover that Freewebs was going to be snobbish with my templates and not let me put it anywhere remotely convenient. Even in the templates where they let me put it in a place that was even slightly banner-like, something else always was wrong; either the template itself was just too unattractive to use, or the text/picture formatting was messing up, and it just wasn't worth it.
    Therefore, I sort of compromised: The front page now consists solely of the navigation bar and the (smaller!) banner. Clicking on the banner will take you to the welcome page, which is also the first page listed in the nav-bar. (I thought it pointless to put the banner-only page in the nav-bar, so there's no clutter.) I myself despise websites that make you click on a picture to get into the real thing, but with the nav-bar there, it's basically the same process as before. Good idea?
    That banner was actually a lot bigger and a lot cooler in its original state, but I suppose that one has to make do with what one is given. (That is, until one complains to Freewebs, which is what one is planning on doing when this update is through!) Really, though. Stephen's flashing a cute smile, and so is Rich Hall. Sean Lock is in intelligent-mode. John Sessions is just *glee*. They all look fabulous. I love it so. ::shakes fist at Freewebs::
