BASIC

In the unlikely case that you are an idiot and you hadn't figured it out already, this website is about QBasic. Now that I have taken the idiot community into consideration, I can move on to all the fun stuff! Whether you are an idiot or not, you may or may not know what QBasic is. Many people who aren't idiots don't even know what it is! So I shall procede to tell you! QBasic is a variant of the BASIC programming language. BASIC stands for Beginers All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. BASIC was invented at Dartmouth college in the year 1963 by John Kemeny (1926-1993) and Thomas Kurtz (1928-) and was implemented by a team of Dartmouth students under their direction. It was based on several older languges that were in use at the time. The original BASIC was intended to be an easy-to-use language for a new class of computer users that were created when new systems began apearing around this time.

The eight design principles of BASIC were:

  1. Be easy for beginners to use
  2. Be a general-purpose language
  3. Allow advanced features to be added for experts (while keeping the language simple for beginners)
  4. Be interactive
  5. Provide clear and friendly error messages
  6. Respond fast for small programs
  7. Not require an understanding of computer hardware
  8. Shield the user from the operating system.

BASIC spread like wild fire due to its of use and the fact that its inventors wanted it to remain in the public domain. Many variants of BASIC popped up in the years folowing its invention and the original BASIC became known as Dartmouth BASIC. It was small and simple and therefore was used on a variety of personal computers that began apearing in the 70s and 80s. if you would like more info on Dartmouth BASIC, just go to the Wikipedia entry for it: Wikipedia entry

Eventualy, Microsoft created a version of BASIC called QuickBasic for MS-DOS. There is a difference between Qbasic and QuickBasic. They are the same language, but QuickBasic is the version of the language that included a compiler or a program that could turn the Basic program into an executable or ".exe" file , which you could run separately from QBasic. Qbasic was the free version that was included with many older operating systems. You had to purchase QuickBasic separately.nowadays, you can still download QBasic for free off of the internet, in fact, it is availible on my site! However, the QuickBasic is illegal to download (even thoughMicrosoft probably doesn't care anymore, 'cause its so old!) but you can still get it as well if you just look araound. I can't offer it on my site because Freewebs.com doesn't want you to do any illegal activity on your website. And I would like to keep my website! :) So, If you are new to QBasic/QuickBasic, I hope you enjoy programming with it! Otherwise, I have on question: why did you bother reading this?
