Pit Bulls: vicious, fierce, mean, killing machines. That's the image that comes to many people's minds when they think about a Pit Bull. The truth is about as far from that as is possible to get.
Pit Bulls are just as lovable, and just as pet like, as any other breed of dog. They are not simply guard dogs for people with something to hide (though they do make excellent guard dogs). Rather, they prefer to be loved, and treated like a real pet. Pit Bulls make wonderful pets; they are loyal, smart, protective, beautiful, and just good dogs all around. There is no reason to think that a Pit Bull can not, or should not, be a pet. Pits are best as pets.
People fear Pit Bulls, not because of their "vicious" nature, but because of people who were unkind enough to mistreat and abuse generations, upon generations of Pit Bulls, in an effort to turn them mean. Pits are not meant to be mean. It's people who have destroyed their reputation, and yet, the dogs still suffer for it.
While many people in the world know the true colors of the Pit Bull breed, most do not. Undoubtedly, you will find people in this world who are "anti-Pit". Pit Bull owners learn to develop a "skin" of sorts, and ignore the nasty comments aimed at their much loved pets.
If you are considering owning a Pit Bull, please remember, that these are dogs, like any other, and should not be treated any other way. They are not security systems, they are not for entertainment, they are not for impressing your friends. Pit Bulls should only be kept by people who want them as pets and companions; not lawn ornaments. I certainly hope you are the kind of person who considers a Pit Bull to be a companion, for that's what they truly are.
