What sets you apart from other bands out there today?
I don't think we sound like any other band. Everyone's the same in the fact that all bands out there are trying to make a career for themselves and have a good time but I think there's any other band that works harder than we do. So I guess, other than our sound, we're just like other bands.
What would you say to someone who's never heard of the band to convince them to check out your show?
The best thing to do is to walk around with headphones like what people do at Warped Tour. It's really direct. I don’t know what I would say directly to someone though. I don't think I would verbally try and convince someone.
Do you guys have any rituals before you go on?
I wouldn't say rituals. There is a routine though. I like to smack Dustin's ass before we go on. That's basically about it.
The Meaning In Makeup came out almost a year ago, are you guys writing / recording new material?
We've been touring this record constantly since it came out. We feel like we've got a little bit more life left on the CD. We get a little over a month off after August and that should set us up for some time to write new material. Hopefully in December or January we're hoping to have a little break to write and go into a recording studio through March and have it out by Warped Tour. That's looking like our plan.
What is your favorite song to perform live?
I think they're all equal. They're all our little babies and I like performing all of them,. There are some songs that are too poppy for my taste; ones that we wrote that I'm kind of over but the adrenaline always gets me going and I forget about it.
What's your opinion on downloading music?
I'm not going to lie, I download many albums. But if I really enjoy the album I'll actually go out and buy it. The ones I don't like, though, I won't go out and buy. I don't want to buy a whole cd for one song that I like. I like to listen to whole albums and see what a band is going for and if I like it than I'll buy it and if not, I'll delete it.
How do you feel about people calling other bands "sellouts"?
What makes a band a sellout? Because they get big? Or why they want to get big? That's why a band does it in the first place; because they want their music to get out there. Do you really want to be that guy or that girl who is selfish enough to call a band a sellout just because they're getting bigger? That same person would have never heard of that band unless they had gotten big in the first place. I don't believe in the word 'sellout' at all. The whole idea of music is to get your message and music out to as many people as you can. There are some people doing it for the money, I guess, but you're not going to get radio-head big if it's not good music. Shitty music won't get that big.
Do you have a message for your fans?
We're doing it because of you. There are a lot of people who care about our music and it's such a blessing to have someone singing songs that you wrote and put your heart into. That's a beautiful, beautiful thing to have and I'm thankful. It's amazing.
I just want to thank Kyle, My American Heart's tour manager, for helping to set this up and for Larry for doing the interview =]
