Bedding

Bedding is one of the most important aspects of your guinea pigs life.
Guinea pigs are social little creatures. They do well in pairs or trios, but also love one on one companionship with their owners. However, no matter how much time you spend giving your piggie "floor time" the majority of their time will be in their cage. Of course, since they are lowset animals, bedding is important, as it is close to their face, stomach, and on their fragile feet.

NO CEDAR
|
|
|
Cedar is a big NO!
While cedar has some benifits, for small animals, it just isnt good. It is a rough material that can cause splintering, chapped feet and is almost impossible to correctly digest.
The worst, however, is none of the above. Cedar reacts to urine, causing toxic fumes to be released as long as it is in contact with ammonia.

Pine

Pine Shavings
While pine is a bit softer on a small animals feet, it usually goes through a curing process that leaves chemicals on the product. Again, keep in mind how much time your piggie will be caged.
With all of the other products on the market that are small animal friendly, or specifically designed for small creatures, Pine should really never be an option.
As stated, it has toxins in it due to processing, but there are other things to consider. Odor is among the top things to most guinea pig owners. Pine does not "cover up" odors, though it has a strong scent of its own.

As I've mentioned, there are alternatives to the most commonly sold beddings. The site I am listing below covers a few of my favorite products, and it gives details on price, ammounts and how the products are made.
When looking for bedding, it is always wise to compare products/prices and recommended uses.
