Ephesians 6:12-13

Finally My brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  for We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.”

The
 Witch Of Endor

When Samuel died, and all Israel had mourned for him, they buried him near Ramah, in his own village, and Saul drove away the Spiritraisers, and the Soothsayers from the country.

The Philistines prepare to assail Israel, and Saul is terrified at their fine Army, and seeks a Spirit-rapper to raise a Spirit to advise him - Goes to the Witch of Endor.

But the Philishum collected, and advanced, and encamped at Shunam - Saul also assembled the forces of Israel, and encamped at Gilboa.
When Saul saw the camp of the Philishtim, he feared and his heart trembled extremely.

Saul consequently inquired of the EVER-LIVING, but the EVER-LIVING did not answer him, neither by dreams, nor by visions, nor by prophets.
Consequently Saul said to his officers, "Seek me a woman who possesses a divining spirit, and I will go and inquire of her." And his officers replied to him, "There is a woman at En-dor who possesses a spirit."

Then Saul stripped, and clothed himself in different clothes, and went, he and two officers with him, and came to the woman at night, and said to her, "Will you call to a spirit for me now, and bring to me whoever I tell you?"
But the woman replied to him, "What!! When you know what Saul has done? …who has driven the Spiritraisers and the Scientists from the country? So why do you seek for my life, to get me killed?"
Then Saul swore to her by the EVER-LIVING, saying, "By the EVER-LIVING LIFE nothing hurtful shall happen to you for the affair."
So the woman asked him, "Whom shall I bring to you?" And he replied, "Bring up Samuel to me!"
And when the woman saw Samuel she shrieked with a loud voice, and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"
But the King answered her, "Fear not for me! -Who? -What have you seen!" And the woman said, "I saw Divine Messengers coming out of the earth!"

The Spirit of Samuel appears.
He then asked her, "What is he like?" She replied, "An old man is now coming up! And he is covered with a cloak!" And Saul recognized that it was Samuel and fell face forward to the ground, and he was terrified.
Then Samuel said to Saul, "For what have you disturbed me to bring me up?"

And Saul replied, "I am in great distress for the Philistim are at war with me, and GOD has turned from me, and answers me no more, neither by means of Instructors, nor by dreams - so I called to you to tell me what to do!"

Samuel then asked, "And for what do you inquire of me, when GOD has turned away, and is far from you?
The EVER-LIVING will do to you, as He said through me! For the EVER-LIVING has taken the Commandership from your hand, and will give it to your neighbor, to David.
Because you did not listen to the voice of the EVER-LIVING, and did not execute His deep wrath upon the Amalekites, therefore the EVER-LIVING has brought this trouble to you today!

The EVER-LIVING also will give Israel, with you, into the hands of the Philishtim. And tomorrow you shall be with me!

Behabalth-Ob can be translated several different ways. In some translations, Ob means "python," which could refer to a literal serpent or an evil spirit. Therefore, Behabalth-Oh could mean that the woman "owns" a python or is "owned by" (i.e. possessed by) a python. The Latin Vulgate calls the witch of Endor a pythonissa or mulier pythonem habens, meaning a woman who tells fortunes by consulting a python or conjured spirit. For a discussion of the meaning of python.

In the Holy Land of 1400 B.C., The kabala was studied and practiced by Rabbis. The Tree of Life is a magical symbol with great mystic powers. When Nostradamus was a small child his family had converted to Catholism under threat from the Inquisition which demanded that Jewish or pagan peoples get out or be put to death. His father was a prosperous notary, but young Nostradamus' greatest influence came from his two grandfathers, both of whom were physicians in royal households, outstanding scholars and among those who wished to preserve the secrets of the Jewish kabala and forbidden ancient magic rituals.

Spirit of the Witch at Endor

Based on I Samuel chapter 28

Endor was a city of the tribe of Manasseh, located about 9 miles southeast of the Sea of Galilee. Samuel was a faithful prophet of the Lord, and serves as a righteous judge for Israel before the times of the kings. The name of Samuel means “name of God.” Samuel was one of the earliest of the great Hebrew prophets and the last judge of Israel. Samuel led his people against their Philistine oppressors. When he was an old man, Samuel anointed Saul as the first king of Israel and later anointed David as Saul's successor. Samuel is recognized as one of the greatest leaders of Israel. In the early part of his ministry, Samuel served as a traveling judge of Israel. From his home in Ramah, he made a yearly circuit to the cities of Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah. Under Samuel, the judgeship of Israel developed into something more than a military leader called upon for dramatic leadership in times of national crises. He became a judge with a permanent leadership office, an office approaching the stature of a king in other nations. When the people clamored for a king like the surrounding nations (1 Samuel 8:5), Samuel was reluctant to grant their request. At first, Samuel though the people of Israel were disgruntled with him and he took this as a rejection of his long years of godly service on behalf of the people. He also was very aware of the evils that went along with the establishment of a royal house. But the Lord helped Samuel to see the real issue, namely that Israel aspired to be like the other nations of the world, and have a king. In their aspiration for a king, Israel was in essence turning their backs on Jehovah. The Lord God remarked to Samuel: "Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them." (1 Samuel 8:7) This serious subject matter of Kingship in Israel, and Israel’s blindness to the Divinely mandated right of God to appoint kings in Israel is part of the reason that Israel has become compromised with worldly whoredom, and missed out on the identity of her true Messiah King. Israel has always wanted to be like the other nations of the world, and to be accepted by them, and to have a king comparable to other nations. (I Samuel 8:4-5 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.) The person (Saul, whom the people esteemed because of his physical stature) whom Samuel anointed as the first king of Israel turned out to be a poor choice. Saul was handsome, likeable, tall, and an imposing physical specimen. Saul was Israel’s perception of the ideal prototypical king, one like the other nations had. But he had a tragic spiritual flaw that led ultimately to his own downfall. He capitulated to the will of the people and disobeyed God by taking war spoils in a battle rather than wiping out all living things, as God had advised and commanded. (1 Samuel 15:18-26) Saul's false pride and extreme jealousy toward David, who had slain Goliath, also led him into some serious errors of judgment and jealousy. Thus, when God finally rejected Saul as king, God once again used Samuel to announce the prophetic words of Saul’s impending judgment. (1 Samuel 15:10-11 Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying, It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night.) Later, when Saul felt threatened by the warring Philistines, Saul decided to disguise himself, and approach the witch of Endor for consultations with her to act as a medium to Samuel, so he could receive some much needed advice from the deceased "Samuel". Saul had previously developed a reputation for disposing the country of witches, because he had been advised of Samuel to not suffer any witches to remain in Israel. Now, without having access to the wisdom of Samuel, Saul needed to disguise himself before the witch of Endor, so as not to alarm her. When the witch conjured up "Samuel", the apparition caused her to become affrighted, for then she realized that her client was none other than Saul, a close confidant of Samuel.

I Samuel 28:11-16 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw "gods" ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy? A medium (such as the witch of Endor) was a person thought to have the power to communicate with the spirits of the dead. (Isaiah 8:19; 19:3; 29:4) Isaiah 8:19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? Isaiah reveals that spirits and powers of the dark world have the ability to peep into our affairs, and to observe the ongoings of things all around us, and therefore to know much about us that we would only expect someone personally close to us to know about. God says that by seeking after wizards and witches, one is demonstrating that they are placing more faith in the false gods of this world than in the one true God. In Luke 20:38, God further reveals that he is a God of the living, and not a god of the dead. According to the Law of Moses, anyone who professed to be a medium or a channel of communication to the spirit world was to be put to death by stoning, and this was the judgment prescribed by Samuel. A medium was considered a necromancer, or communicator of the dead. The practice of being a necromancer was the craft or practice for extracting information of guidance from a Pagan god. For this reason alone, the spirit of Samuel conjured up by the witch of Endor should be viewed with great skepticism. The Bible explicitly teaches against expecting any legitimate contact with the dead, for its participation can only serve the purposes of Satan.

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. The witch of Endor reveals that she saw gods (plural) ascending out of the earth. There is much debate as to whether or not the gods out of the earth were from Heaven or from Hell, and as to whether or not the apparition that was conjured up by the witch was the real Samuel. The witch described Samuel’s appearance to Saul as being an old man covered in a mantle. A mantle was a type of robe, or coat for the upper portion of the body. There was something about this mantle that convinced Saul that the apparition was indeed Samuel. It may be that Saul remembered that Samuel’s mantle had become torn in a prior meeting between himself and Samuel. Samuel informed Saul, that like the renting of his mantle, so had God rented the kingdom of Israel from Saul. Perhaps the torn mantle was a sign that deceived Saul into perceiving that the apparition was none other than the real Samuel. You will notice that in verse 15 of chapter 28 of I Samuel that the apparition appearing as Samuel addresses Saul in this manner; “why has thou disquieted me, to bring me up?, and, why then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is thine enemy?” One can almost hear the harsh anger intoned by these remarks directed towards Saul. It is as if the apparition is immediately and intentionally trying to intimidate Saul. By intoning this strong invective against Saul, the apparition has placed Saul on the defensive, and shown that he has super-knowledge about Saul’s dilemma. This insidious demonic game-mansip was never Samuel’s reaction and attitude towards Saul while Samuel was alive. Samuel was always respectful of Saul and demonstrated immense love for Saul, even after the Lord had withdrawn his favor from Saul. (1 Samuel 15:35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.)

I Samuel 15:26-28 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbor of thine, that is better than thou. It is often assumed that the apparition conjured up by the witch of Endor was the real Samuel, allowed by God to emerge on the scene when the witch called him up. Most scholars that follow this line of interpretation feel that the fact that the apparition correctly predicted Saul’s defeat and his son’s deaths verifies that the apparition was from God. But this theory seems to fly directly in the face of the Lord’s own instructions.

Leviticus 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

Also, the scriptures informs us that there is a great gulf fixed between heaven, hell, and the earth that inhibits human passage from one place to the other. The rich man begged the Lord to send Lazarus to forewarn his brothers of the torments of Hell, so that they could avoid that place. But the Lord informs the rich man that passage by Lazarus was impossible because of the gulf that was affixed between them. Furthermore, the Lord informs the rich man that people such as his brothers would not even be persuaded of the truth even if someone appeared unto them though they were returned from the dead. So, it seems highly unlikely that the apparition appearing as Samuel was anything other than a demonic trick.Luke 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. How then was the apparition able to correctly predict the defeat of Israel at the hands of the Philistines, the deaths of Saul and his son’s just a mere day after the conjured visit of the apparition by the witch at Endor? It should be noted that the Lord had already announced his abandonment of Saul because of his utter disobedience in chapter 15, and before Samuel had died, and had announced that his kingdom would be taken away from him. The forces of Hell were aware of the judgment of the Lord upon Saul, and when God abandoned Saul, he was left completely open and vulnerable to the devices of Satan. Moreover, the Lord through Samuel flatly informed Saul that his rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and his stubbornness against the Lord was as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee (Saul) from being king. From that point onward, Satan could have taken Saul and his camp anytime that he wanted. It was simply through the instrument of the Philistine armies that Satan devoured Saul and Israel. This passage takes place when the Philistines were gathering their armies together to fight Israel.  King Saul, having seen the Philistine army, was greatly troubled and attempted to inquire of the Lord for guidance.  But due to Saul’s past transgressions, God refused to communicate with him by any means.  Saul then requested his servants to seek out a female medium (witch, conjurer of the dead) in hopes of guidance.  He was directed to the witch of Endor.  But since Saul had previously been instrumental in eliminating witches and wizards from the land, and even though Saul was in disguise, the witch at Endor was hesitant to help, thinking that a snare was being cast to expose her.  But since Saul took an oath in the name of God that nothing amiss would happen to her, she gave in to his request. Upon Saul’s request to bring forth Samuel, the witch attempted to do so only to be astounded that someone recognizable as Samuel appeared.  And for someone unknown reason, not clearly revealed in this passage, she then realized that it was King Saul with and for whom she was working.  King Saul, after again calming the witch, communicated through her to the apparition.  But he could receive no relief through the communication, only a confirmation of the impending death of both him and his sons, along with the conquest of the host of Israel by the Philistines.

The Question

The question by student and scholar alike is who or what was the apparition.  Was it truly Samuel or a demon impersonating him?  There are notable scholars on both side of the issue.  Ultimately, the Bible student must make up his own mind regarding the matter.  There are arguments for both sides of this coin.  Both views will be presented.

Samuel

God interrupted the séance unexpectedly by allowing Samuel to appear.  This view is based on the following: The witch was startled by the sudden appearance of Samuel in place of the familiar spirits with whom she was used to dealing. The text calls the spirit “Samuel.” The spirit prophesied accurately as to what would happen the following day, which would be somewhat “out of character” for a demon in such a circumstance, i.e., he would normally speak good tidings toward the one seeking help.

Demon

The spirit that appeared only impersonated Samuel, a view based on the following:

Saul never personally saw Samuel, he only could take the witch’s word that it was him.  Such a demon would be well acquainted with the deceased human being and would be able to imitate (impersonate) him, deceiving both the witch and the one desiring communication with him.  God’s Word is clear.  All forms of witchcraft and necromancy (to conjure up the dead) are abominable to God.

When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations.  There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.  For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you. (Deuteronomy 18:9-12)

It is inconceivable that God would resort to such an abominable practice, thereby granting credibility to it, in order to communicate with man.  This would especially apply to the case at hand, since God had already taken the position of being incommunicado with King Saul.

Saul had become so wayward in his spiritual life and had laid himself wide open for Satan.  In this sense, 1 Timothy 4:1 was indeed applicable to him, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”  And most revealing is an exegetical understanding of 1 Chronicles 10:13 & 14, which in the King James Version reads as follows: “So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; and enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.”  The words “counsel” and “one that had” were added by the translators for a “better understanding” of verse 13, but appropriate could have been left out.  If so, the verses would state:

So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking of a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; and enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

These verses then make it clear that Saul was speaking to a “familiar spirit” (demon) and not to God.King Saul did not receive any new information.  Samuel, before his death, had already pronounced the death, the destruction, and the rejection of Saul (1 Samuel 15), events of which Satan would have been well aware of and could easily have used in his communication with Saul.

Although Samuel was an occupant of Paradise (the righteous side) at the time of this communication there is indication from the New Testament that travel from Paradise back to earth is not permitted (Luke 16:22-31).

Conclusion

As stated previously, it is up to each Bible student to decide which scenario is correct regarding the identity of the spirit in 1 Samuel 28 For this student, the evidence that the spirit was a demon impersonating Samuel is most compelling, and it is this scenario that this student believes is correct.  The entire experience between King Saul and the witch of Endor was Satanic in origin and execution.

It is unfortunate that there are Christians today who attempt to use this passage in order to justify witchcraft, mediums, spiritualists, and the like.  All are an abomination to God and must be shunned by the Christian community.  This use of the passage should be evidence enough to any Christian that Saul’s experience with the witch at Endor was purely Satanic.

This is a sieve. It was like the hollow, old wineskin of the witch of Endor. She mumbled into it and the echo and confused voice was sold as the voice of the gods. The familiar spirit is also the nebel or harp device. Pagans always told the audience that the voice coming from stretched strings was the gods living inside. Paul speaks of a bronze vase or echo-chamber as a hi-tek familiar spirit while warning the Corinthian churches that such "speaking in tongues" was not appropriate for the Christian assembly. Lucian of Samosata shows that at the Oracle at Delphi home of Apollo the thunderer "divining from the sieve" was a tool.

"Alexander, on the other hand, preferred his native place, urging very truly that an enterprise like theirs required congenial soil to give it a start,

in the shape of 'fat-heads' and simpletons; that was a fair description, he said, of the Paphlagonians beyond Abonutichus;

they were mostly superstitious and well-to-do; one had only to go there with someone to play the flute, the tambourine, or the cymbals, set the proverbial mantic sieve a-spinning, and there they would all be gaping as if he were a god from heaven

there was a time too   it was in 2005 i think. me and my sister .. well  mostly her but i took her up to gettysburg to get some things for a dress. it was Abrahams lady suttler i think.. but anyway  we was in the place and  the  at the register counter paying for her things . and the door opened.. well i heard the door open  it sounded like some one opening to walk in or walk out the dor knob turned and  just  opened.. all the way.. and just stayed like that until one of the people that worked there went and shut it. but  no one was in the building but me and my sister and the two people behind the counter.

My experiences with paranormal things, has gone farther then i have thought and imagined. not really hoping for them to but they just happening. it all started  about in the late part of 2001 and early 2002. when i was just started to be kinda interested in this kind of thing.. i started out with recording E.V.P.'s.. which are actually nothing more them evil and satanic forces that can communicate though the use of tape recorders and cameras & even video, to confuse people making them think that is it voices  of dead people and actually getting pictures of weird things.. id take my little mini recorder  up to gettysburg a lot and my camera. and  when id get to a certain place id cut the recorder on and just talk to my self or to what ever was listening. the 1st time i went to the triangular field, back behind devils den.  Where General Hood  came up with his men that was bombarded  by smiths battery artillery.  General Hood was coming up  from the trees  up the hill having hard fighting. There are impact craters  still here left from the artillery shells,, there are big holes all over the ground here. i was standing and talking about  who all faught there and who was there and such and  i  replayed the thing when i got home and only after a few minutes, and i was asking about who was there and what they was doing  there came up some short speratic sounds.. it  sounded like real quick rubbing over the mic on my coat. the way a dog sniffs  at something, but i had the thing in my hand out away from me.. but it was unrecognizable as to what it was  but there was no wind blowing, well there was a tiny breeze but  nothing to cause the sounds.. and if it was, it would be speratic all through the recording but it was only after a few certain questions i was asking my self short bursts happened. but that was all .. i ever got from there. but  the only thing really weird about it every time and when ever i went in there to that field, my pocket watch would move back an hr or two at some point and id notice it a while after i leave there not thinking about it. General Hoods men finally came up and tried to take devils den, they over ran the artillery and had heavy fighting on these rocks.

The most unfortunatley successful place i have had  with is in the spot where the 1st New jersey Brigade  was in reserve and dug in at the stone walls that are here,  General Albert Torbert was the commander, but anyway i was recording again and that day it was in 2003, either february or march.. but  i was talking about the horses  i was in my uniform of corse and saying some thing and im walking along and then there is a real light whisper sounding voice saying: " please... " and then a really loud heavy whisper it says : " Help me!!" . but i did not notice it until after i was listening to it here, after i got home. and that same day just after that. i got a picture

this one was taken in July 2005 in this same area it

was getting dark.. i was about to go and took this one:

some thing drifted in front of the camera.

and the next night i was going to go   and it was so hot there the whole weekend.. it was about 8 or 8 30..and as soon as i got the the woods getting ready to go up in there to get a recording..i noticed it was unusually cool.. down right cold even and and so dark in there.. i wanted to go in infact i started to  but i didn't know what would happen.. so regrettably i left.

but this below is the wiekert house.. looking from the spot  where i got the recordings in the new jersey brigade area, they used this spot for  the movie gettysburg.. for General Lee's headquarters

these were taken in my house. the top one was  last week which was about july 27, 2008.  it shows about 10 or 12 of those " orb " things in the living room. but what ever they are.. they are alledgedly energy "left behind" of a departed person that dies.  but thats not really the case. it could possibly be, and most likely is either angels, which is kinda doubtful,  or it is satan using his puny followers to create and confuse people into thinking  that they are departed loved ones.

but all the tiems i have tried before my grandmother left this world i have never gotton any of these before,

but it is not her, or my dog. and if anyone tells you any difrent, then they dont really know or they just want to think they are, not wanting to admit that it is demonic spirits trying to confuse people

here is another one i got just a little while ago, august 5th 2008

Both skeptics and ardent believers in the paranormal admit that supernatural and unexplainable activity—sightings of ghosts, spirits, and/or aliens—is on the rise. If there is no supernatural, what are these apparitions?

Millions of eager viewers are gobbling up popular movies such as Ghost , Casper the Friendly Ghost, Beetlejuice, Ghost Rider, and Ghost Busters. Video fantasy and arcade games featuring ghosts, skeletons, and mummies and beings alive after death are the rage. TV shows such as “The Night Stalker,” “Supernatural,” “The Ghost Whisperer” are skyrocketing. Why do we have such a fascination with death and ghosts, while so many argue that ghosts are merely superstition?

The most logical place to go to get the facts about supernatural things is the Bible, the one authority about things that cannot be seen or explained by natural earthly laws. And indeed, the Bible does indicate that paranormal activity and interest in the spirit world would increase at the very end of time. Even more alarmingly, the Bible warns that these spirits will lure multitudes into
worldwide deception .

"And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles , which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty." Revelation 16:13-14

With this in mind, how vital it is that we understand what the Bible says about ghosts, spirits, and the afterlife!

People are often fearful of “haunted” buildings, believing that the spirits of the dead are active there. A quick perusal of the Internet will expose many web sites dedicated to ghost photos, videos, and stories. Of course, many of these are ridiculous hoaxes. However, some are more credible and cannot be easily explained away. The question is, what are they?

The Bible teaches that the dead do not come back to haunt houses because they are resting in grave awaiting either of the two resurrections.

Jesus said: " Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth ; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation ." John 5:28-29

"As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house , neither shall his place know him any more ." Job 7:9-10

"While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being. Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. " Psalm 146:2-3

"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing , neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun ." Ecclesiastes 9:5-6

Who is responsible for the strange phenomena that provoke fear in so many hearts? It is Satan, the Devil, who wants the world to believe that the dead are not really dead.

"Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die : For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. " Genesis 3:1-5

   Skeptics are in Grave Danger
The occult practices of mediums who think they talk to the dead is popular again today. They are really talking to demons. Many people rationalize that supernatural spiritual manifestations are all merely fraudulent hoaxes. But these people are in great danger of being deceived when they are exposed to a supernatural happening that cannot be explained. While it is true that trickery has often been palmed off as genuine manifestations, there has also been marked exhibitions of supernatural power.

The mysterious rappings with which modern spiritualism began, late in the 19th century, was not the result of human trickery or cunning, but was the direct work of evil angels, who thus introduced one of the most successful of soul-destroying delusions.

Many will be ensnared through the belief that spiritualism is a merely human imposture; when brought face to face with manifestations which they cannot but regard as supernatural, they will be deceived, and will be led to accept them as the great power of God.

Commentaries and Concordances
GSB: 1:2 And the earth was {b} without form, and void; and {c} darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God {d} moved upon the face of the waters.
(b) As an unformed lump and without any creature in it: for the waters covered everything.
(c) Darkness covered the deep waters, for the waters covered everything.
(d) He maintained this disordered mass by his secret power.
WES: 1:2 Where we have an account of the first matter, and the first Mover.
1. A chaos was the first matter. 'Tis here called the earth, (tho' the earth, properly taken, was not made 'till the third day, Ge 1:10) because it did most resemble that which was afterwards called earth, a heavy unwieldy mass. 'Tis also called the deep, both for its vastness, and because the waters which were afterwards separated from the earth were now mixed with it. This mighty bulk of matter was it, out of which all bodies were afterwards produced. The Creator could have made his work perfect at first, but by this gradual proceeding he would shew what is ordinarily the method of his providence, and grace. This chaos, was without form and void. Tohu and Bohu, confusion and emptiness, so those words are rendered, Isa 34:11. 'Twas shapeless, 'twas useless, 'twas without inhabitants, without ornaments; the shadow or rough draught of things to come. To those who have their hearts in heaven, this lower world, in comparison of the upper, still appears to be confusion and emptiness. And darkness was upon the face of the deep - God did not create this darkness, (as he is said to create the darkness of affliction, Isa 45:7.) for it was only the want of light.
2. The Spirit of God was the first Mover; He moved upon the face of the waters - He moved upon the face of the deep, as the hen gathereth her chicken under her wings, and hovers over them, to warm and cherish them, Mt 23:37 as the eagle stirs up her nest, and fluttereth over her young, ('tis the same word that is here used) Deut 32:11.
MHC: 1:1,2 The first verse of the Bible gives us a satisfying and useful account of the origin of the earth and the heavens. The faith of humble Christians understands this better than the fancy of the most learned men. From what we see of heaven and earth, we learn the power of the great Creator. And let our make and place as men, remind us of our duty as Christians, always to keep heaven in our eye, and the earth under our feet. The Son of God, one with the Father, was with him when he made the world; nay, we are often told that the world was made by him, and nothing was made without him. Oh, what high thoughts should there be in our minds, of that great God whom we worship, and of that great Mediator in whose name we pray! And here, at the beginning of the sacred volume, we read of that Divine Spirit, whose work upon the heart of man is so often mentioned in other parts of the Bible. Observe, that at first there was nothing desirable to be seen, for the world was without form, and void; it was confusion, and emptiness. In like manner the work of grace in the soul is a new creation: and in a graceless soul, one that is not born again, there is disorder, confusion, and every evil work: it is empty of all good, for it is without God; it is dark, it is darkness itself: this is our condition by nature, till Almighty grace works a change in us.
