CATHOLIC SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS:

Catholic schools visited David A. Boody on April 20, 2005.  Children of all religious faith attend these schools, including some atheist children.  Catholic schools offer scholarships, financial assistance and other types of grants.  The scholarship the child receives is based on how well the child performs on the catholic entrance exam test called TACH.

The higher the score on the test, the more financial scholarship the student will be awarded.  These types of scholarships are called Merit Scholarships.  They are solely based on the students test scores and grades.  Also, other kinds of financial grants are available in certain catholic schools.  The website for the TACH exam and catholic school information is www.tachsinfo.com or call 1866-61 TACHS.

In addition, the PTA Scholarship Committee has introduced to our school, non-for-profit educational organizations, which recruit high achieving students of color for independent high school scholarship awards.

TEAK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The first agency we would like to present is the Teak program.  This program recruits seventh grade students of all races, but only selects three students per school.

These three students are selected through the Guidance Counselor, Miss Jessica Nunno.  Qualifications are high grades of A and B's.  Averages of 90 and above is a requirement.  Registration starts in September thru January 5th.  Miss Nunno selects the three candidates and notifies the students and family.  Students are required to fill out an application.  After completion, the students hands application to Miss Nunno.  Miss Nunno confirms all information is correct on these forms, and mails forms to Mrs. Nicole Rodriguez, Director of Admissions for the Teak program.

The Teak program will notify these three students by mail.  A test of English and Math will be scheduled for these three students.  They need to do well on this test.  It is an absolute requirement in order to move on to stage two.  Even if the student attains an excellent score on this test, it does not guarantee acceptance into the program.  An interview will follow.  If you have any questions, please get in contact with The Teak Admissions Office.

Mrs. Nicole Rodriguez, Director of Admissions, website www.teakfellowship.org and E-mail n.rodriguez@teakfellowship.org.  212-288-6678. address 16 West 22nd Street, New York, N. Y. 10010 3rd Fl.

PREP FOR PREP

Prep for Prep is a rigorous academic program, designed to provide high average six grade students of color, with the skills needed to succeed in independent schools.  Recruitment starts in the fifth and six grades.  Our six grade students need to have scored a 705 and above on their Fifth Grade Reading City Test.  Students with scores of 705 and above will qualify for the Prep for Prep Entrance Exam, which is a reading and math test.

Registration is from September through March 04. Parents can contact Mrs. Sharon Richman, Guidance Counselor at 718-645-2742 she is handling this program.  The parents will receive the invitation letter by mail, which has the instructions you need to follow to start the process.

After you receive the Open House Invitation, please attend this meeting, and find out if this program is for your child.  It is not for everyone, as you will realize once you attend this important, informative meeting.  You can contact Prep for Prep by calling Miss Sanchez, Director of Admissions at 212-579-1470.  Address, 163 West 91st Street, New York, N. Y.  10024.

PREP 9

Prep 9 in 1987 was preceded by the success of Prep for Prep, a program which began in 1978.   Prep 9 identifies intelligent and motivated seventh graders of Spanish (Latino) and African American backgrounds and prepares them for the ninth grade.

The students Six Grade CTB Reading exam score needs to be a 700 and above.  If a child has a Reading Sixth Grade score of 690 and a Math score of 710, this student qualifies.  If a child has an overall average of 90 and above, be sure to call the Prep 9 Admissions office and speak to the Director of Admissions, 212-579-1470, ext. 212.  Ask them if your child qualifies, even if he/she does not meet the Six Grade Reading and Math scores.

Registration begins in September through April 15th.  Miss Jessica Nunno, Guidance Counselor is in charge of this program.  Students who meet this criteria are selected in the Guidance Office by Miss Nunno.  She will mail out students names to the Prep 9 Admissions Office.  The Admissions Office in return will mail out all invitations to the parents of these students who qualify to attend the Open House Meeting.  If your child meets these requirements and you have not received an invitation by ending February, please call Prep 9 or Miss Nunno, in the guidance office.

The website for Prep for Prep and Prep 9 is; www.prepforprep.org  People of color are considered Spanish (Latino), Asians, Native Americans, Muslims and African Americans.  If you are not sure, please call Prep for Prep/Prep 9 and always ask for admissions.  Speak to this office they can help you.

THE ALBERT G. OLIVER PROGRAM

This academic program recruits specifically Spanish (Latino) students and African American seventh graders.  One-third of Oliver families are single-female receive public assistance or disability income.  An average of 56% of the Scholars come from families having incomes of $30,000 or less.  Miss Jessica Nunno is again in charge of this program.  She selects the names of students with averages of 90 and above.  Students names are mailed out to The Oliver Program.  Applications are distributed to the students/mailed to their homes/school.

Completion of applications is very important.  Letters of referral are needed, but only 2 or 3, no more than that are necessary.  Always call the organization and find out information.  Mrs Dania Diaz, Director of Admissions, 212-430-5980, address 80 Maiden Lane, New York, N. Y. 10038 Ste. 706.

Registration is now through March 12.  Unlike the Prep for Prep and Prep 9, The Albert G. Oliver Program offers no entrance exam.  They are more interested in the students Six Grade Scores and average.  There website is; www.theoliverprogram.org  Go online and research the day private schools/boarding schools which accept Oliver Scholars.  You will be pleasantly surprised.  All of these academic organizations offer schools of outstanding performance.  These schools are the best in our country.

A BETTER CHANCE:

A Better Chance is another educational institution.  They also require no entrance exam.  They specifically look at the grades, letters of recommendation, and a interview will be scheduled.  The student will be tested in math and reading, but there is no entrance exam needed in order to meet with the ABC Admissions Office.  The test given to the child is simply a curiosity of where the child is academically.  If the child does well, it is a feather in her/his cap.

Reading is crucial, students need to read always.  Look up words, in the dictionary, that are challenging; this is so important, it expands your vocabulary.  Practice your math, your numbers.  Community service is important with these agencies, volunteer in the hospitals.  Methodist Hospital, in Park Slope, and  many nursing homes accept student volunteers.

A Better Chance (ABC) recruits six to eleventh grade students.  Some of these students will be accepted into the best independent day/boarding schools in the nation.  Recruitment starts in May.  Call and get your applications in the mail.  These registration forms parents can be requested by mail simply by calling ABC.  Once you have received these forms, fill them out and return them as soon as possible.  The school will need to fill out letters of recommendations, the Math and Reading parts of the application will be necessary, and other forms of the application process as well.

For students entering the 8th grade in September:  Request the application by mail by April if there available and that way you get a head start.  You will need to contact Miss Leah Dixon, Program Coordinator for the NY Metro Region at 646-346-1340.  National Headquarters, 240 West 35th Street, 9th Fl. New York, N. Y. 10001, Main Tel. no. 636-346-1310, website www.abetterchance.org  Students entering the 8th grade in September, some time in June call Miss Leah Dixon and ask for the Pilot Program Registration.  It is a three week summer preparation ISEE exam classes free of charge.  Remember the ISEE Exam is given to the students interested in private day schools.  It is the test given by the private school.  ABC is simply helping you to get ready for this exam.  You can also purchase the book.

The first part of the application will be needed by October 1st.  And the second part will be needed by November 1st.  Students entering the 8th grade in September can get a head start, by giving the Math, Reading and Personal Recommendation forms to their 7th grade teachers.  The first and second quarter of the 8th grade report card will be sent to Miss Dixon after Christmas.  These schools are nation wide they’re practically in every state.  To view these schools log on to www.abetterchance.org/member.htm

During the interview process:

- Make eye contact, look at the interviewer's face even if you're a little coy, every little bit helps.

- Know what books you have read.

- ABC interviewers are very nice, they offer the children candy during the interview.

- Prepare your children to be self confident even if there scared.

- Students, stand up for yourselves and be proud of who you are.

- Have courage in your heart and remember you can...  GOOD LUCK!!

Sincerely,

Maggie S. P. Tumandao.
