Welcome 8th/9th Graders

Welcome 8th and 9th grade students! Now is the time for you to make your choices about where you want to go to high school. As you are choosing up to twelve (12) high school programs to list on your application, please consider these tips:

You should:

·   Make 12 choices

·   Want to go to any of the choices you list on your application

·   Know the distance and travel time to each of your choices

·   Understand the level of competition for admission to each of your choices

·   Know whether or not a program you choose is part of a larger campus

·   Understand the academic and extra-curricular programs that the school offers

·   Apply to programs that can meet your needs and interests

 Applying to High School

As part of the Chancellor’s Children First Reform Initiative, we have improved the High School Admissions process to better match students with high school programs. Students rank up to twelve (12) schools/programs. Students are matched to the highest ranked school that has also ranked them. This means more students than ever before can attend a school of their choice. In its first year of implementation (2003-2004), the High School Admissions Process placed approximately 21,000 students more than the previous year in a high school/program they chose.

How the Process Works

Parents and eligible students should work with guidance counselors in the fall to fill out a high school application for the 2005-2006 school year. Using the High School Application Form, students select up to twelve (12) high schools/programs. Students list their schools/programs in order of preference on the Student Program Choices page of the application. In addition, any student may apply to the specialized high schools which require a separate entrance exam and/or audition.

High schools have staff that carefully review each of their applicants. The staff makes recommendations and ranks the students. Neither the students nor the schools are aware of the other party’s rankings.  This is a process built on student choice, and only with such a system can fairness be ensured in the matching process.

The student will receive one school match that takes into account the rankings of both the student and the school/program. The student is matched with his/her highest ranked school that has also ranked them. If a student is not matched in the Main Round, he/she will be entered in the Supplementary Round.

Resources are available for students and their families to help them understand their options. These resources include the high school directories, high schools fairs, open houses, parent workshops, guidance counselors, parent coordinators teachers, assistant principals and principals.

Important information about appeals:

Each student may only file ONE appeal. The results of that appeal are final. below is the official link...
