DJ Mixes

As I became interested in dance/trance music I started listening to various DJs on radio streams such as DJ Doboy (www.djdoboy.com). I admired his mixing capabilities and later managed to get 65 of his hour long mixes (takes up quite a lot of space on my iPod!!). After this I wanted to also be a DJ and started looking for DJ mixing software which could mix mp3s and other digitally compressed music. I came across 'Tactile12000X' and eventually managed to get one ear of a headset for cueing up the next track. I created 14 trance mixes and 3 house mixes lasting about 20 minutes each. The artworks for these can be found on the artwork page. While this was very much like the real thing, the quality of mixes was always not like DJ Doboy's mixes. In early 2005 I came across 'Traktor DJ Studio'. This was great, but I wanted to still use 'Tactile12000X'.

After a while I decided to give Traktor DJ Studio a proper go. I created my first hour long professional trance DJ mix in January 2005. I called it Electrancity Volume 01. This was far better than the stuff on 'Tactile 12000X' so I continued to do these professional mixes. To make the mixes even better I recorded the song, then the mixes separately and then edited them together. I didn't want to go through the mix in one go as it would not be perfect, so this method made sure I could get each mix to top notch quality. I edited using 'Sound Studio' - a brilliant piece of software perfect for my editing. To edit, I take the end of one of the trance songs lets say, and find a point at the end which I can quickly find again. I zoom in on the sound waves and delete whatever is after that point. On the mix between that track and the next one I find the exact same point and copy whatever is after it. I then simply paste the mix after the original song and it flows nicely. Sounds complicated but it is really quite easy! So I have now done 12 Electrancity Mixes, each around an hour long. All the artworks for these are above.

After doing about 2 of these mixes I decided to share them with the world. I searched for a site to upload my mixes and found www.globalbeatz.net - I filled in all the necessary information and uploaded Electrancity Volume 02 via FTP. (I uploaded volume 2 first as it was the better one at the time). After good feedback from this I uploaded volume 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. I also uploaded 'Evolution'. Unfortunately the website decided not to host any more DJ mixes and so currently my mixes are unavailable for download. I am trying to find a new host so hopefully I will have them back up on the net soon.

For now, you can simply download some of the transitions between tracks on the 'Sample Downloads' page.
Also on 2 August 2005, I did a cheese mix which also was available to download on the globalbeatz website. I hope to upload this to the net again at some point in the near future.

Here is the fantastic software used to mix the Electrancity sets. You can see here Forever by Trinity-X being mixed into Sky (Magik Muzik Remix) by Veit. This is taken from Electrancity Volume 5.

Above is 'Tactile12000X', the software I used before I discovered 'Traktor DJ Studio 2' (see above). As you can see it is far more basic and much more like real DJ mixing with vinyls. It cannot alter the pitch/speed independently or has no filters. However, this was very popular for its time as this software was the one of the first to let you mix mp3 files.

This is my current equipment setup in my bedroom, capable of making me a 'real DJ' as opposed to just mixing with software. I have the Numark iDJ2 MP3 Mixing Console and two Axis 4 CD players.

Although this mix took just two days to mix and edit, the quality is certainly there. Just like Volume 14, this has a good progressive vibe to it, with the trance becoming harder and more epic towards the end of the set. The album cover is perhaps my favourite of all Electrancities so far. The original picture was something I made in a crafts group earlier that year. I decided to take a picture of it and add some effects using Adobe Photoshop, in order to make it into an Electrancity artwork!

Evolution. This takes progression to a whole new level. As you can see from the tracklist this mix starts off chillout and ends up hardcore. The beats per minute travels from 70-175 throughout. This mix has the most tracks in it so far which was done by editing and trying to cut down all of the tracks to under 4 minutes. This is one of the reasons why it took so long to complete. On top of that, I wanted to make this mix perfect, so I spent even longer getting the transitions just right. It's not surprising it took almost a month and a half to finish!

In this mix I am starting to use more progression throughout the mix. Starting off with progressive trance like 'Gill Norris - Forme (Leama & Moor Remix)' and ending up with epic trance such as 'Andy Hunter - Amazing'. I spent a long time perfecting the transitions in this mix so it took quite a long time to complete. Once again, great tracks such as 'Young Parisians Feat. Ben Lost - Jump The Next Train (Kyau Vs. Albert Remix)' and 'DT8 Project Feat. Roxanne Wilde - Destination (Jurgen Vries Vocal Remix)' definitely makes this one of my favourite mixes.

That's right, this one only took 2 days to make from start to finish. In fact it only took one day but I decided to change the first track from 'DJ Sammy - Sunlight (Pulser Remix)' to 'Atmosphere - Storm (Alphazone Remix)' as I thought it would suit the mix better. The bonus transition between 'DJ Sammy - Sunlight (Pulser Remix)' and 'Greg Downey - Cued Recall' is available on the CD version of this mix as an extra. Even though this took only 2 days I think that this Electrancity has the best transitions out of all of the ones I have done so far, they are very smooth. Also, transitions 4-5 and 8-9 have the same bass line so they are almost unnoticeable. I shall be submitting this one into a competition soon as I think the mixing is the best.

During the 6 days of doing this mix I met up with a girl who I hadn't seen since when I met her on holiday the year before. That is why the artwork features a picture of her. However, Electrancity Volume 09 just like all Electrancities features very good, smooth transitions so I hope it will score well!

Here's a great mix for really good vocal trance. Tracks like 'Klea - Tic Toc (Magik Muzik Remix)', 'Agnelli & Nelson - Holding Onto Nothing (Club Mix)' and 'Thrillseekers - Dreaming Of You' are some of my all time favourites. As well as those tracks, there are some classics like 'Paul Van Dyk - Nothing But You (Club Mix)', 'ATB - Ecstasy (Club Mix)' and 'Slipmatt - Space' - the track that got me into trance music. I thoroughly enjoyed mixing this.

Yet more great trance in this mix - using many tracks from 'The Ultimate Trance Album'. The highlight of the mix has to be 'Veit - Sky (Magik Muzik Remix)'. I almost cried when I heard that track for the first time (well not really but you know what I mean). It is one of my favourite trance tracks of all time. Smooth and controlled mixing as normal and a cool artwork to go with it!

A very early mix but mixing and track selection was very good. This mix was the one which gave me a great confidence boost as this was the first Electrancity where I felt my mixing was up to a professional standard. In Electrancity Volume 01 and perhaps in Electrancity Volume 02 I felt my mixing was a bit scrappy as I was just getting into DJing. As for the tracks in this mix, yet more great names such as Delerium, Fragma, Push and DT8 Project.

With this mix you can tell I am starting to get the hang of mixing. I've learned from Electrancity Volume 01 that you need to take tracks which are vinyl versions so that the mix will flow well. The mix has 13 tracks as some of the tracks are not full versions. Therefore I needed to put in more tracks to make an hour set. Mixing can sometimes quick but still very smooth, especially transition 2-3.

My very first proper non-live trance mix. I had mixing knowledge was not great and in this set I ended up using tracks from mixed CDs! Even so, the mixing was quite good but in a totally different style to how normal DJs mix. Usually the next track's vocal would come over the previous track and then the second track would punch in. Personally I think this mix is the most fun to listen to, as well as possibly having the best tracklist - maybe a bit cheesy though. Because of the inevitable disagreement with the style of mixing, I have not uploaded this one. But I will upload it one day for you to hear it!
