The History Of Reiki ?
In the 19th century, a Japanese monk named Dr. Mikao Usui discovered symbols and a formula for healing in the ancient Buddhist scriptures. This led him to his spiritual pilgrimage on mount Kuri Yama, a sacred mountain near Kyoto in Japan, where he fasted and meditated for twenty one days. He set twenty
one stones before him as a way to count the days. On the 21st day of his meditation, the way to use the symbols was revealed to him. He was struck by a powerful light in the middle of his forehead. Out of the rainbow of colour that he saw, came bubbles of white, blue, purple and gold, each containing the keys or symbols of the Reiki ray. He heard a voice saying "These are the keys to healing, learn them and do not allow them to be lost". Reiki was discovered and the Usui system of Reiki natural healing began.
Dr. Usui returned to Kyoto and during a meditation he was instructed to go to the beggars quarters to do healing work. He offered his healing in exchange for a place to sleep and three bowls of rice a day. He worked there for seven years. However, he noticed that after a certain length of time, some of those whom he had healed had returned to the slums, simply because it was easier to stay as beggars than working for a living, or they just wished to escape responsibility. He realised that he had failed in his healing work on some level. After intense meditation, he realised that he had healed the physical body's of the beggars, but not the spiritual. He discovered that there has to be a raising of consciousness for true healing to begin and that all healing begins on the spiritual level. He meditated on this and was given further guidance that concerned the healing of the spirit and the responsibility of the healee in the healing process. He was at that time given the five spiritual principles of Reiki to balance the prior physical aspect of his healing work.
Dr. Mikao Usui was born in 1865 and made his transition in 1926. There are two major historical accounts concerning Dr. Usui:
One states that he was a Buddhist monk in Kyoto, Japan who followed a twenty eight year quest to rediscover how the budda had healed through divine love.
The other jaccount states that he was the dean of a small Christian university in Kyoto who resigned to rediscover how Jesus healed.... This quest began at the university of Chicago.
Both accounts merge at the sutra studies:
He studied the Japanese lotus sutras, (ancient teachings) the Chinese sutras and then the Sanskrit sutras of Tibet. The Tibetan scrolls revealed information concerning St. Isa which several scholars relate as the physical incarnation of master Jesus. Whilst Dr. Usui had the technical and mental information that he needed concerning healing, he lacked the physical and spiritual empowerment process that he needed to be able to heal.
Dr. Usui gathered a following of sixteen teachers. Before he died, he asked one of his students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a retired naval officer, to preserve the Reiki teachings. Dr. Hayashi, Dr. Usui's successor founded the first Reiki clinic in Tokyo, Japan in the early 1900s. There he trained thirteen masters. He was a powerful mystic and was able to foresee the future, because he was aware that he, as well as many of his trained
masters, could be called into active service for world war two, he decided to initiate two women in order to insure that the Reiki tradition would not be lost. One woman was his wife who told him that she had no desire to teach Reiki. The other was Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Japanese woman from the island of Hawaii and it was she who preserved the Reiki tradition. Mrs. Takata and Mrs. Hayashi were the only two Reiki masters to survive the war.
Mrs. Takata was healed at Hayashi's Reiki clinic whilst visiting her parents in Japan. She asked to learn Reiki in exchange for a year of work in the clinic for Dr. Hayashi. Years after her return to Hawaii, Dr. Hayashi asked her to return to Japan for her initiation into the mastership. It was Mrs. Takata who introduced Reiki to the western world. In the 1970s, Mrs. Takata began to train other Reiki masters and by the time of her transition in December 1980, she had trained twenty two Reiki masters.
Dr. Usui's successor Chujiro Hayashi, founded various Reiki clinics and ordained the first female master, Mrs. Hawayo Takata. As grand master she has spread Reiki throughout the world and her granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto is the present grand master.
THE MEANING AND VALUE OF REIKI
Reiki is a hands - on healing technique based on a particular attunement process which all practitioners must go through. Reiki is said to create an open channel for cosmic energy to flow through the Reiki healer to the other person. Reiki is a boundless healing method which can also be combined with regular and alternative modes of treatment. Many chronic and acute diseases might be the expression of deeper, sometimes emotional causes. A true Reiki healing can take place when emotional and spiritual problems are healed.
Reiki breaks through blocks, and lets the universal energy of life flow again to stimulate the healing from inside. The word Reiki means universal life energy. The first syllable Rei describes the boundless aspect of this energy. While KI is the vital life force that flows through all living beings.
WHAT IS REIKI?
Reiki comes from two Japanese words - Rei meaning universal and KI meaning life force energy. This universal life force energy flows through all living things. We receive this energy from a number of sources including sunshine, air and food and it can be increased through Reiki. When the energy is high, you feel strong and confident, but when it is low you can feel weak, vulnerable and be prone to sickness.
Throughout the history of mankind, healing methods have existed which were based on the transfer of a universal, all - pervading life energy. The knowledge of Reiki would have remained lost forever had it not been rediscovered in a 2,500 year - old Sanskrit Sutras at a Japanese monastery by Dr. Mikao Usui towards the end of the 19th century.
Reiki is not a religion, nor is it a faith system. All that is required of a person is the willingness to heal.
HOW DOES REIKI WORK?
When the universal life force energy flow is adversely affected in some way, illness can result. Negative and dis - harmonious thoughts and feelings can cause disruption in the flow of the energy. It has been stated that some doctors believe that up to 98% of illness is caused primarily through the mental/emotional state of a person.
The Reiki therapist channels the universal life force energy through the hands to the recipient, activating the body's own natural ability to heal itself. Reiki goes to the deepest level where many illnesses originate. It
releases blocked energy, cleanses the body of toxins and helps to create a state of balance. Reiki functions on all levels of a persons being and adjusts itself according to the needs of the recipient, helping them to take
responsibility for their life and to make changes in attitudes/lifestyle to promote a happy and healthy life.
WHAT DOES THE THERAPY ENTAIL?
Reiki is a very simple, yet extremely powerful technique. Normally a Reiki therapy session is done with the recipient lying down on a massage table. The recipient remains fully clothed and is covered by a blanket. The
therapist lightly places their hands in various positions over the whole body. Each position is held for several minutes. Throughout the session, no pressure whatsoever is exerted by the therapist. This means that Reiki can be given to those recovering from surgery, the elderly, the very young and pregnant women.
The whole body is treated to enable the energy to go to the source of the imbalance and not just to the manifesting symptom. A Reiki therapy session usually takes about one hour.
WHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE?
What the recipient feels varies from individual to individual, but generally speaking you will feel warmth or a tingling sensation in the area being touched.
As your energy is brought into balance, stress and tension is released. This results in a feeling of well being and deep relaxation.
CAN REIKI HARM YOU?
Reiki complements and increases the effectiveness of most kinds of medical treatment. It is a completely safe, holistic and natural way of treating disease.
The therapist only uses channelled Reiki energy and therefore does not deplete their own energies. Indeed, the therapist retains some of the residual Reiki energy.
WHAT CAN REIKI HELP?
Reiki can help most conditions including stress, anxiety, tension, depression, insomnia, migraine, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, constipation, ME, MS, arthritis, back pain, sciatica, prostrate problems, menopausal problems and chronic complaints. Even if you are fit, Reiki can help you to stay that way. It is also a good energy booster.
Basically it is the laying on of hands and the channelling of a none - physical energy through the channeller to the recipient.
The recipient can be a human being, including oneself, or any other living animal entity or energy.
