Dr. Rafael P. Saldana is an alumnus of the Philippine Science High School (Class 1977). He has earned a doctorate degree in mathematical and computational biophysics from Monash University in Australia as an AIDAB scholar. His research interests include mathematical modeling, computer simulations, high performance computing, and cellular automata.
He has published researches in reputable international publications such as the Journal of Muscle Research and Cell Motility (United Kingdom) and the Biophysics Jounal (USA). His research achievements include the 1997 National Academy of Science and Technology’s Outstanding Published Paper Award (“The Fluid Dynamics of Shuttle Streaming in Physarum polycephalum”) and the 2001 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Faculty Research at the Ateneo de Manila University (for his work on the development of a university-based high performance computing system for computational science applications). Dr. Saldana has conducted researches on modeling air pollution and vehicular traffic dynamics, and he has been a recipient of the US-ASIA Environmental Fellowship.
Dr. Saldaña has taught physics, mathematics, computer science, ecology and environmental science at the Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Monash University and the University of the Philippines. He has also directed research centers and laboratories (La Salle's Environmental Research Center and Ateneo's High Performance Computing Laboratory) and managed graduate programs in computer science and information technology. His professional involvements include the following: being the President of the Computing Society of the Philippines and a member of the Mathematics Society of the Philippines, Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas, Physiology Society of the Philippines, Biology Teachers' Association, and international organizations such the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, High Performance Computing Asia, and the IEEE Computer Society.
His other studies include science education, philosophy, theology and pastoral ministry. He has done consulting work on establishing science centrums and has been an active volunteer in several non-governmental organizations engaged in reforestration, biodiversity conservation, providing education to children in poor communities, and giving leadership training to young people.
Before transferring to the Philippine Science High School on November 21, 2002, Dr. Saldana was an Associate Professor at the Mathematics Department of Ateneo de Manila University.
