The Fence - a closer look

This, as you can see is a selection from Fence. This, I thought is a good case for some detailed study.

The bare breasted soldier obviously represents a symbolic gesture - an act of incomprehensible heroism. Disregarding enemy bullets - which have claimed his compatriots - the soldier tries his best to mend the breach in his country's perimeter. The volatility of the situation is further read in that live shell - which lies on the foreground. The dead soldier on the right has a bullet hole in his forehead. From this emanates a steady trickle - another take on that steady erosion of India's precious youth. The rifle on the left, barrel down, acknowledges this sacrifice. All for the fence!

In the world that we presently inhabit, the Fence is so relevant - vitally important to a nations identity. Yet, in some utopian imagination, some of us see a futuristic world where diversity is a cause for celebration - and not war.
