Intro to Stage Combat

Safe and enjoyable combat

What is stage combat?

*he looks over the class and nods*

Welcome to Introduction to Stage Combat.  Today we will begin with our opening lesson on what exactly stage combat is.

*he points his wand to the board and writing appears*

There are many things you should know about stage combat but the most important is that safety comes first.  We don't want people losing an eye.

*he smirks*

Well I would but I don't think Mr. Clemenceau would allow it

*he lets out a little chuckle and continues*

Because safety comes first you are required to fully understand what stage combat is.  Stage combat is a rehearsed fight where you are putting on an act for your audience.  You want to practice your fight scene as many times that you could do it with your eyes close.  If I catch anyone doing it with their eyes close you will pay the consequences

*he smirks and continues*

Once you have every move memorized then it is time to work on your acting.  You need to be able to sell the sword fight.  For example you will not just act out the fight as if you have rehearsed it.  You need to get caught up in the moment and use the crowd stimulus and the scene to feed your emotions.  Screaming, grunting, and looks of pain, anger and pleasure used at the appropriate time can sell the show.  A movie example where this can be shown is Lord of the Rings:  The Fellowship of the Ring.  Towards the ending Aragon is fighting an Ork.  The entire fight scene was planned and the emotions portrayed sold the fight.  A fight must also be entertaining and exciting to watch which can be created by creating a fight scene that has unexpected surprises.  These surprises of course are already planned

*he nods at the students*

Please check over your homework and hand it in to me as soon as possible.  I shall see you next class.  If you have any questions feel free to ask
