I started volunteering at the city farm today. They have pigs, goats,
sheep, calves in the spring, chinese geese, ducks and best of all,
chickens. I spent three hours cleaning out and brushing two goats, 1
large sow, and 14 3-month-old piglets. I changed before I went home,
but the bloke sat next to me on the bus looked like he didn't want to
be there. What does this have to do with the website I hear you ask?
Ah, well, I asked if I could take my camera next week and take some
pictures for my website and they said yes! I will also be going to the
Poultry Club's National Show on Sunday 4th, so more pics there too!
Finished coyote page

30th Jan 07 We've
been experiencing a three-fold increase in visitors over the past two
days. Whether that is anything to do with being linked by feathersite,
I don't know, but it is good. We even had four people from Romania
yesterday!
Completed
raccoons page.
Edited
about me section.
Started work on
badgers page.
Transferred news section to it's own brand spanking new page, here.
31st Jan 07 News now has it's own page
here. However, news from the past week or so will still be displayed on the home page.
February2nd Feb 07 Added opossum page
At the bottom of the news page, you can now find a section called 'chickens in the news'.
3rd Feb 07
The H5N1 strain of bird flu has been found in the UK - Suffolk to be a
little more precise. There are various measures in place, affecting
various areas of the country. All bird shows, swaps etc. are now banned
until further notice, but DEFRA has allowed the National Show at
Stoneleigh, Warwickshire to go ahead. Please practice good biosecurity.
Read all of DEFRA's advice
here.
However, don't bother ringing them as they don't know anything - when
trying to ask whether the national poultry show was on, the response I
got was "Does poultry include chickens?" and then he went off and came
back with the response "Uh, I think so". Idiots. Rant over.
4th Feb 07
I went to the national show today. Got lots of pictures, most of them
came out but I haven't had any time to upload them yet. There were
about 1000 out of 4500 birds absent, probably due to people not knowing
that the national was still going ahead. Got lots of nice pictures for
a new section on showing eggs.
5th Feb 07 The opossum page is now *nearly* finished.
6th Feb 07 Now finished editing
pics from national show to go up on the breeds section. A little over
100 will go up over the next few days.

brahma pages.

Added a video to
'fun stuff' - the angry chicken
15th Feb 07 I've made the
suggested reading section much better. Now it has descriptions of what is and isn't useful in each book.
Backyard Chickens,
my favourite message board for chickens, has been featured in the
Tractor Supply Co.'s (an large chain of American feed stores) instore
magazine, OutThere. You can read the online article
here, and a post that I made is right down at the bottom.
*Hopefully*
I'll be getting a new chicken over the weekend, another welsummer
pullet. I just have to wait for the breeder to ring me back and tell me
if she has any going spare. Update: she didn't.
16th Feb 07 The UK government
has outlined some "hygiene lapses" in the Bernard Matthews poultry
plant, more than likely caused the H5N1 outbreak. I hope this
reinforces to you the importance of good biosecurity.
BBC Article.
We
are now allowed to have bird shows, swaps and races again, plus BM has
had a fall in sales of 40%. My day just got a lot better

.
However, those within the protected and surveilance zones still have to
keep their birds indoors. One poultry keeper from the area rang up
DEATHRA (sorry, I mean DEFRA) and asked why BM could resume imports
from Hungary (how this outbreak started) but they could not let their
birds outdoors. They were told that BM had a special license, and so of
course this poultry keeper asked for a special license. They were, of
course, told no. Then again, Mr Matthews has probably just made a large
donation to the Labour Party, and is also probably on his way to
Buckingham Palace as we speak to collect his peerage. One rule for them
and another for us. *Rant over*
If you are in the Bristol /
Gloucestershire / Wiltshire / Somerset / Dorset / Devon areas of
England and have a good quality welsummer pullet for sale then please
let me know. I will collect.
Started work on bobcats page.
20th Feb 07 Reformatted
My Chickens / About Me
page to get rid of a nasty advert that freewebs puts in for me. Also
added in a few new bits and pieces of information. Still looking for
that welsummer.
22nd Feb 07 Put up larger pic of my coop on coops page.
The
traffic that this website gets looks set to have doubled in the space
of one month - from 243 individual users in all of January to 434
so far this month!
Still looking for that welsummer pullet.
23rd Feb 07 Wrote up a section on egg showing
here.
Finally did a site map. Turns out there are over 80 pages on the site!
24th Feb 07 Found a picture of a chick with plasters on it's feet to straighten out it's crooked toes. It's now on the
deformities page.
March10th March 07 Been bogged down in work lately, so sorry for the lack of updates really.
I
was starting to wonder why I hadn't recieved any questions lately on
the contact us page and then found that I have used up all of my
submission credits. So, for about a week that page will be out of
action. In the mean time, you can email your questions and comments to
the_chicken_lady@hotmail.co.uk 12th March 07 For one
reason or another, I have not had eggs for 7 months. But today, Molly
finally gave me an egg ^_^. It had a little bit of blood on it (normal
for the first few eggs a pullet lays) so I'll take a picture and put it
up on the egg page.
24th March 07 Sorted out the contact us page now, it's just the same.
April9th April 07 I have put in a whole new page -
raising chicks.
10th April 07 Added 'agricultural shows and fairs' to
buying chickens page.
15th April 07 Added sections on inspecting birds for health before buying them and transportation of your new birds to buying chickens page.
26th April 07
Yes, I know I should be updating more but I am getting a mini tidal
wave of emails a day from the website's visitors (keep them coming :) )
and there are things to do in the garden . . . like planting out those
oversized runner beans *hangs head in shame*. Still, a very nice woman
named Maryanne emailed me some more chicken names so those have gone
up.
