All About Chickens

Everything you need to know about chickens!

Meet The Girls

As you can probably see I am not a large scale chicken keeper. Due to living in the city, I can't have any cockerels, and for that reason I don't hatch myself. That, however, doesn't mean I don't know a thing or two about them. Here are my chickens from most recent to first ones.

TWIGGY
Named after the 1960s model, for her small size, Twiggy is a bantam Welsummer that I got in the summer of 2008. She came from the city farm where I work, and so because she is very used to humans, she is the friendliest of the three. In this picture, she is sat in my dining room on the edge of a dining chair!

MOLLY

Molly, known for a while as Morticia, is a large black orpington pullet. We got her in early December 06 as an 18 week old. She is very friendly (if a little dim), and about 3 times the size of Lily, although Lily is most definitely top of the pecking order!

LILY
Lily is a large fowl tailed Lavender Araucana. We bought her on 2nd September 2006 as a friend for Matilda, after the untimely deaths of Hilda and Midge. At the time, and in the photo, she was only about 6-8 weeks old. When she is older and has better developed crest, beard and muffs, we are going to start showing with her. When she is old enough, she will lay blue or green eggs, which I am looking forward to. Lily is now adult, but is still the size of a large pigeon. We have come to the conclusion that this is because she wasn't fed chick crumbs before we bought here, leading to her stunted growth - this just shows the importance of good nutrition.

To any US readers, I know she is nowhere near the US standard, but it's totally different over here and Araucanas are meant to have a beard and muffs, and a tail is optional.

MIDGE
Midge was a blue laced red wyandotte and came to us from Wales. So far she has laid a nice tinted egg every day. She is very friendly and was pecking grain from my hand on the second day I had her. Unfortunately, along with Hilda, Midge was killed and eaten by a fox on 16/08/06.

HILDA
Hilda is my welsummer hen. We got her in early May 05 after the untimely demise of Satan. She was bought at an agricultural fair (not normally I wise option but Matilda was pining and our options were limited as to when else we could get another chicken). We were told that she was being sold to us at about a year old. Because of when she was hatched, if we had bought her at 21 weeks she wouldn't have layed for ages. She is a very inquisitive chicken and is second in command. She's always first to check out the new wood shavings in the coop and to squawk at the cat. At laying, when she's good, she's very, very. good, and when she's bad she's awful. She didn't lay from October until February this year, but laid almost every day since then, except when we tried (and failed) to hatch duck eggs under her. Unfortunately, along with Midge, Hilda was killed by a fox on 16/08/06.

MATILDA
Matilda is a Light Sussex hen. She was one of my first two (bought along with Satan when they were 12 weeks old) and her estimated hatch date is 10th March 2004. She loves porridge and is always the first to the treats. She is also the top hen in the pecking order. She passed away peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with illness on the night of 12/13th November 2006. She will be sadly missed.

SATAN
Satan was one of my first two chickens. Her sister was Matilda and also a Light Sussex. She was hatched around 10th March 2004 and was bought aged 12 weeks. When she was alive she was boss chicken and even put the dog in it's place once by pecking his ear - hard! Satan always loved raisins. Satan died on 21st April 2005 of unknown causes. Unfortunately, I don't have any good pictures of her to put up here.
