Highlight of The Week: Maryland vs St. Joes
In another overtime thriller, Maryland and St. Joes participated in an amazing game for the Junior Division.
The first half of this game was a low scoring game, each team had twelve points a piece. Both teams played good defense, and both coaches loved it.
In the first half of the game, Christian James had 8 points to lead his team.
Then the game got crazy, and the crowd really got into it.
During the second half Sarah Calinar took over for Maryland, with 10 points in that half, and she finished with 12 points. Another important player for Maryland was Valarie Taylor, who had to sit some of the game with an injury. But she tried her hardest to play through the game and helped her team with her ten points.
Also, during the second half Christian James continued to score, and Maryland had no answer for him, at all. Christian finished the game with a total of 20 points. Christian and Sarah had some nice back to back scoring, and it was fun to watch for everybody, except the opposing coaches.
Then the final two minutes of the game came. With about 1:42 left in the second half, St. Joes were up by six points. And thought they had this game wrapped up.
Maryland on the other hand, thought otherwise, they kept fighting and the Maryland coach kept striving for one last push from her team, Maryland. Taylor scored on a nice lay-up, then Sarah followed on the next play. And the lead was down to two for St. Joes. Maryland quickly fouled when Maryland got the ball, to stop the clock, and make St. Joes shoot foul shots. In the favor of Maryland St. Joes missed the shots, and then Valarie made a big shot that tied the game and sent this into overtime.
In overtime, Maryland quickly got up by four points. Then James stole the ball from a Maryland ball handler, and continued to make the lay-up. Maryland was up by two points, with a 1:36 left.
On the next possesion for Maryland they missed a lay up and St. Joes got the ball. James brought the ball up the court took a shot, and Devin Tiffany got the rebound, and scored a lay-up. With forty seconds left James got a rebound off a Maryland missed shot and went the whole court for a potential game winning lay-up.
There was one last chance for Maryland, but they could not capitalize. And St. Joes won the game 41 to 40.
