One of my favourite trains of all time has to be the class 90. Ever since i saw a picture of a class 90 in Virgin livery i have wanted one exactly the same! Since it was over 6 years ago, i didn't know anything about it (like what it hauls). My first train was a Hornby HST and i didn't know that when a locomotive hauls the mk3 coaches, you use a DVT. Luckily, just before the Hornby DVT in virgin livery when out of production, i got one! I am going to add lights to the DVT to make it look more realistic. I didn't get the class 90 in virgin livery before they went out of production! A couple of years later when we started to put the base boards in, i went on eBay and spotted the train i wanted. And, after a couple of days of watching and waiting, i won the train!
When i got the train, it was mint condition but still, it had some problems. It was to light, so it couldn't haul my long rake of mk3 coaches so i had to make it heavier. At the time i also had the class 86 and it could easily haul my mk3 coaches, it was heavier than the class 90, so i needed to add some lead. I didn't know much about liquid lead, but i had a lump of solid lead, i bent it into shape and stuck it down on the frame. This did improve the traction, but the wheels where still slipping, i looked at the bogies and found that only 2 wheels on one side have traction tires. So i went down to my local model shop (transport models) and got the other 2 tires. I found that the other 2 had been worn down by quite a bit so i took them all off and put a new one on either side.
After a while, it runned very well but was still slipping but not by much, i looked at the traction tires and couldn't tell which where the new ones! So i went back to the model shop and got 4 new ones and replaced them all. Now it works like a dream!
