How to get those does to breed!
Rabbits breed best when the days are long. This is a sign of spring and summer to their internal clocks, so it makes them more receptive. Sooo....you must fool mother nature. Expose them to more light (especially natural light through a window during daytime) or light bulbs (ones that have lighting similar to sunlight like infrared or specialized flourescent bulbs) to help increase their desire to mate during the winter. Keep the rabbitry lit for approx. 14 -16 hrs a day.
I've never noticed any real difference between the actual time of day, other than around feeding time. Don't breed around feeding time because the rabbits are likely more intersted in the food than in mating.
Tips to help make that breeding successful:
1) Check the vulva (as if you were determining gender) on the doe every day. Light pink means she will probably not want to mate. Deep pink or red means she is likely to want to mate and has the most chance of getting pregnant. Purplish means she will probably mate, but she has less chance of getting pregnant.
2) House her in between two males. Sometimes the scent of the males very close will encourage her to be ready to mate.
3) Take her for a car ride with at least one male in the car. The change of routine combined with having the scent of males in an enclosed space seems to do the trick for some females.
4) Take her to a rabbit show! Being around all the unfamiliar rabbits, the car ride there, etc. seem to REALLY help make does ready to breed.
Good luck!
