The Vampire Slayer

Faith (Eliza Dushku) is the Slayer who has been entrusted by the Council of Watchers with what is perhaps is the most important job of all: the guarding of the Cleveland Hellmouth. Yet Faith, a convicted murderer, is a fugitive from the law, and while the Watcher’s Council can provide her with a new identity, they can’t protect her from herself. She must constantly fight against her dark past, ever wary of falling anew into the temptations of darkness. But there is perhaps an even greater danger: of being so afraid of falling back into darkness that she is paralyzed, unable to save Cleveland from the evils that plague it.

The Old One

Illyria (Amy Acker) is an Old One, a member of the race of demons which ruled the Earth and a thousand other dimensions in the time before the human race gained dominance of this plane. She was God-king of the Primordium, one of the most powerful of her kind, until at last she was defeated in a forgotten battle and interred within the Deeper Well. In 2004, however, her sarcophagus was removed from the Deeper Well and found its way to the L.A. branch of law firm Wolfram & Hart, where Illyria infected the young physicist Winifred Burkle, killing the scientist and taking the young woman’s body as her own “shell.”  Finally free, Illyria vowed to regain her place as unrivaled ruler of the universe. Yet the world that Illyria awoke in was not the primordial dystopia she had once known. Trapped in the body of a mortal, her powers diminished and her armies gone, Illyria has found herself alone and relatively powerless. Forced to ally herself with Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, the former lover of Winifred Burkle, and adopt him as her guide, Illyria began to discover the wonderful and often scary world of being mortal. Joining Wyndam-Pryce and his allies in the fateful battle against the Black Thorn, she watched him die at the hands of mage Cyvus Vale and is unaware of the fates of the rest of her team. Now truly alone (see my short story “Funeral”), Illyria has adopted the persona of her bodily shell, and under the guise of Winifred Burkle has procured a job at DemonTech, a Cleveland research laboratory. But old friends and older enemies await the Old One in Cleveland, and this Dark Champion has no idea what destiny has in store for her.

The Vampire

The woman who in death would be known only as Drusilla (Juliet Landau) was in life a chaste Catholic girl in Victorian Britain. Devoted to God, she was nonetheless cursed with a potent magical gift: the Sight, or the power of prophecy. As a Seer and an innocent, she caught the attention of vampires Darla and Angelus, who took to slowly torturing the young girl, playing cruel mind games which ultimately robbed her of her sanity. She was finally turned after she took her vows in 1860 at the Sisters of Mercy convent in London. Robbed of both her soul and her sanity, Drusilla became a twisted version of the chaste and innocent girl she had once been. Forever childlike, fond of dolls and nursery rhymes, and speaking her cryptic prophecies in a rich language full of strange allusions, Drusilla developed a taste for the sadomasochistic at Angelus’ knee. Now, the vampire seer has traveled to Cleveland, and her visions (if interpreted correctly!) can be used by those around her for good or for ill, meaning this soulless vampire might just find herself helping out the good guys. After all, it is only Drusilla who has any real inkling what the future has fated for our Dark Champions.

The Lawyer

Lilah Morgan (Stephanie Romanov) is a talented lawyer working for the Senior Powers at Wolfram & Hart’s Cleveland branch. There’s just one thing that makes her exceptional: she’s dead. Bound by the contract she signed in blood while alive, Lilah has been to hell and back and now finds herself facing the unenviable position of serving the Senior Partners for all eternity. An individualist always, Lilah never has been one to take orders well, but for now must concern herself with the cases of Faith and Illyria.

The Watcher

Andrew Wells (Tom Lenk) is a Watcher-in-Training, a representative of the Britain-based Council of Watchers. He has been sent to Cleveland to aid Faith and keep her informed of any new Council intelligence. But he, like Faith and the other Dark Champions, has a dark past: he murdered his best friend Jonathon Levinson under influence of the First Evil. Still doing penance for this deed, it is his job not only to make sure that he himself is not lured back to “the Dark Side” but that Faith isn’t as well.
