Belmonte is home to the 13th century castle that was transformed into a manor house by the family of Pedro Alvares Cabral. Cabral is the navigator who discovered the land of Vera Cruz, which is now Brazil.

The statue of Nossa Senhora da Esperança is located in the Church of Santa Maria in Belmonte. This statue had accompanies Cabral in his voyage.
