Huntingdon Manhunt Ends
A man for whom Police and civilians had been searching for six days, on Sunday walked into Mr. George Byatt’s farmhouse at Huntingdon. Mr. Byatt brought the man to Wauchope Police Station about 6 p.m. The man , Augustard Clarke, was wanted for questioning in connection with the killing, on Monday 18th, of Miss Ruby Christina Workman, 25 year-old daughter of Mr. Albert Workman, of Huntingdon.
About 5 minutes to 2p.m. on Monday, 18th May, Miss Workman was found beside her home with her head smashed in. A man, standing nearby with a bloodstained three-foot paling, was able to escape. Believed to be armed an intensive search for the man was immediately commenced, about 50 Police taking part. From reports, it is believed that the man had made his way to the Bulga area and was trying to get to Walcha. It now transpires, however, that during the six days he was at no time more than three miles from the Workman home in Huntingdon.
When brought to Wauchope on Sunday, he was suffering from exposure, hunger and cramp. He told Sgt. Bourke he had no food. A doctor was called and the man given stimulants. During Sunday night he was provided at four-hourly intervals with hot broth, and by Monday morning was in better condition. The man, a half-caste aborigine, said he went t the Byatt homestead yesterday evening to return a double-barrelled shotgun, which he had borrowed on the day of the killing.
During his period of hiding the man was unable to light a fire because he had no matches; he tried to get a fire going by firing off a cartridge, but this did not work, and he suffered acutely from the severe cramp. Search parties must have passed within a few yards of where the man was hiding in a gully near Huntingdon.
When Clarke went to Mr. Byatt’s house, only about 100 yards from the Workman home, he said: “George, here is your gun. Thank you very much for the loan of it. I am hungry and want something to eat.”
Mr. Byatt gave Clarke a meal. He said that Clarke was astonished when he told him that Miss Workman was dead. Mr. Byatt said Clarke then said: “I will give myself up to the Police tomorrow.”
Mr. Byatt told him he could not let him go and would have to take him to the Police.
With the half-caste, Mr. Byatt then went to the home of a neighbour, Mr. Joe Lindsay, who drove the two to Wauchope Police Station where Clarke was handed over to Sergt. Bourke.
Inspector Yardy, who had returned to Kempsey on Saturday night, was advised and he immediately set out for Wauchope. Clarke told the Inspector that he had been in a gully in Broken Bago Forest in the Huntingdon area. Clarke said: “Nobody would have found me unless they walked right on top of me. I did not see any searchers.”……………... relief to the Police. (line missing)
Patrols had travelled hundreds of miles and searched a great deal of forest area between Wauchope and Walcha. One patrol, under Sergt. McLaughlin, of Newcastle, could not be located until Monday afternoon, after having been in thick bush at “Number One,”
at the top of the Manning district.
One of the tales about the search for “Gus Clarke” which was lapped up with much relish by some newspapers, was a lurid description of Sergt. Clifford, of Port Macquarie, who was reported as having been “accosted with leeches” and rushed 50 miles to Wauchope Hospital “with leeches clinging all over his body.” Sergt Clifford was the most surprised reader - he had one leech on his leg, and purchased a piece of sticking plaster from a chemist to place over the small puncture.
At Wauchope Court House Monday morning, at 10 a.m., Augustard Clarke, appeared before Mr. A.M. Brunsdon, J.P. , and was charged with, on 18th May, at Huntingdon, he did feloniously and maliciously murder Ruby Christina Workman.
Appearing on behalf of the Police, Detective Sergt. Whalen asked that defendant be remanded. Counsel for the defendant, Mr. J.M. Glass agreed to the remand, but asked that bail be granted. Sergt. Whalen objected to bail in view of the seriousness of the charge. He said that it was alleged that on 18th May 1953, defendant had gone to a farm at Huntingdon where the deceased, Ruby Workman, was alone. He attacked her, it was believed, with a heavy paling, causing such extensive head injuries that death was instantaneous. Defendant had then took to the bush and remained hidden until Sunday afternoon. Defendant was remanded to appear at Wauchope Court of Petty Sessions on 15th June. Clarke was taken to Maitland Gaol on Monday, where he will remain until his next appearance at Wauchope Court.

HALF CASTE FOR TRIAL ON MURDER CHARGE
Clarke will appear at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Maitland. Bail was refused.
Much local interest was shown in the inquest, and the court room was as crowded to overflowing.
A statement read in court and alleged to have been signed by Clarke, said he had met Miss Workman while fishing. “I fell in love with her,” it read. “She encouraged me to come to her father’s home. We had planned to build a home of our own.”
Albert James Workman, the dead girl’s father, told the Coroner he did not know of his daughter’s intentions of marrying Clarke.
Workman said he found his daughter lying on the grass at the side of the house. A piece of paling was laying beside her.

for Sybil Aitkins.
Born at home at Warrel Creek on the North Coast of NSW. Sybil saw
the affacts of two world wars and the Depression.These events
had a big impact on her life, forcing her to leave school and
eventually train in nursing at Sydney Hospital. An avid reader
and learner throught her life.
Sybil became computer literate in her 80's so she could
produce the church bullatin each week. So much easer than the
typewriter.
Sybil and her husband Tim moved to the mounatins when Tim retired.
They have been active in the senior citzens and church groups in
the area.Sybil organised bus tours to many places for the senior
citzens, bringing new experiences to many who would otherwise
have been unable to travel. These outings were the forerunner
of the Mountains Transport
service.
Sybil died at Blue Mountains Hospital on 9 January 2009
after several mounths of Illness.
The number of visitors and phone calls while she was in
hospital showed just how many lives she had touched in
her quite and unassuming way.
I remember my grandparents well, Jane my grandmother was an
indomitable woman, Short and given to stoutness but she bore
13 strong healthy children- All of whom lived to a good age.
Sydney my grandfather was a tall bewhiskered man at 6'6"
and with very light blue eyes,very observant eyes, a big
beard and moustache, he was a commanding figure. I dreaded
having to kiss all those whiskers when I was a child.
My mother Nellie was born in Kempsey the 7th in line, she
was a pritty woman with high cheek bones and green eyes
with fine skin, determined, clever and inveterate reader.
Her life was very hard but I think on a whole she was
mostley happy.
Mum had five children two born with the help of "Granny
Hall"in Kempsey, two helped into the world by Nurse
Putland at Warrell Creek, the last was born in luxuryat
a little hospital at Macksville with a doctor in attendance.
Mum had seven sisters and five brothers with Uncle Syd head
of the family, then there was Aunty Lil-actually Priscilla
Jane, Aunty Lil was a very tall woman, big built like her
father. My memories of her are happy. She lived and later
bought a three storey house in Underwood St. Paddington,
I loved Aunty Lil and was always welcome.Aunty Lil had one
son that was a policeman, I often wondered how he reconciled
his mother's S.P.Bookie activities with his career. A blind
eye perhaps.
Aunty Minnie had four sons and no daughters so she fastened
onto me a bit.Aunty Marion was short and stout and like,
most of the family good looking, She lived in Ashfield
though her postal address was Canterbury, Ashfield was a
better address those days.Aunty Marion would basked in the
limelight of her great grandson's Craig Mclachlan, sucess
as an actor. Never the less she was always kind to me and
was in fact my Godmother having insisted on both my brother
and me being christened.This took place in the suburb of
St. Peters where she lived at the time. Aunty M's great
desire was to win at cards was a bit of a draw back there.
By fair means or foul she won, whether she was playing with
the children or anyone else.I have happy memories of her
kindness and care for me and my mother during her sad
illness.
Uncle Percy was next and his life was very sad.He was married
and had two sons Fred and Des.Both boys joined the Navy.
Fred deserted and came to hide on our farm.He was an excellent
runner.Scoring the horse he would run to the Post Office three
miles away and would be back almost before anyone knew he was
gone. He stayed with us for several months before deciding it
was not worth all the worry and gave himself up. For his crime
he served ninety days on Garden Island.He served on the HMAS
Australian and was lost at sea.Des also paid the supreme
sacifice on the HMAS Yarra.

On board the “Harriet” were James TILBROOK, his wife Mary Ann TILBROOK nee ROLPH,
his daughter Sarah TILBROOK from his first marriage, Charlotte Adelaide TILBROOK,
James and Mary Ann’s first child and Mary Ann’s son Charles ROLPH. After arriving in Australia
there is no further mention of Charles ROLPH so it is assumed he died on board the “Harriet”
during the trip out, perhaps from measles,or maybe he married as Charles Ralph:
