Hi - what a great site!  My grandparents had the Royal Hotel and I have grown up listening to the spooky stories of the place.  I've looked all over for a picture of it - does anyone know of one? Does anyone have any memories of it?

Way back in the late 1950's (I guess) some of my relatives were involved in running The Royal. Gilbert and Mary Johnson assisted by Mary's parents the redoubtable Rachel (my gran's sister) and her husband Donald. I still remember the buffalo's head above the door of an upstairs meeting room - where The Buffs met.

Hi Harvey Are you on Facebook? There is a great group site called "Where are all the Porties". Lots of pictures and memories of the Royal. Will be people who knew your Grandparents as well. It is a closed site but if you post your full name and where you live on here, I will look for you on Facebook and join you up to the Porties Group. Regards Mary Whitaker.

My late husband was born in Beech Terrace in 1938 and later moved to Eton Terrace. He wrote an account of the first 15 years of his life. Does anyone remember Dennis Hart or his family?
