After nearly dropping to the 2nd division in 2006, the bears (11-0)
have had a dream season in 2007 and will host the Tampere Saints (6-5)
on Sunday in the SAJL 1st Division Championship, the 2007 Spaghetti
Bowl. The bears earned the right to face the saints after
defeating the Kouvola Indians in the semi-finals on Sunday, August 26th
by a score of 50-17 in front of over 600 spectators, the largest crowd
in bears history.
1st Quarter
After holding the indians to a three-and-out to start the game, the
bears began their first drive at the 50-yard line. On 1st down,
Obiajulu Ikejiani was brought down behind the line for a short
loss. On 2nd-and-11, Stan Bedwell hit Ikejiani on a screen pass
for twelve yards and a first down. Two runs of 10-and-8 yards by
Ikejiani and a personal foul on the indians set up a twelve yard
touchdown toss from Bedwell to Ville Penttila to put the bears on the
scoreboard first. Ikejiani's conversion run made it 8-0.
After holding the indians to another three-and-out, the bears took
advantage of a short punt by the indians Aku Kuhlman when they took
over at the 35-yard line. On first down, Ikejiani carried the
ball for five yards. On 2nd down, Bedwell threw a 30-yard
touchdown strike to a leaping Tony Sandhu to give the bears a 14-0
lead. The indians would answer right back, however, as Joonas
Nikula picked up several short runs before breaking off a 43-yard
scamper to put his team on the scoreboard. Kuhlman's kick made it
14-7.
Matias Niekka's lost fumble on the ensuing kickoff put the indians in
great position to tie the game up, but Jukka Lunden stopped Nikula for
a two-yard loss on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line to bring the bears
offense back onto the field.
2nd Quarter
Starting at their own 3-yard line, the bears were able to move the ball
out to the twenty-two before punting it back to the indians.
Kouvola was unable to get anything going, however, and they turned the
ball over on downs at the bears 38. Two runs by Ikejiani moved
the bears across midfield and a 41-yard completion from Bedwell to
Jokinen set up a three yard touchdown run by Ikejiani to give the bears
a two score lead. Bedwell's conversion pass to Markus Kivero made
it 22-7.
Penttila intercepted Kouvola's Mikko Lautamatti on the following drive
at the bears 41. On first down, Bedwell found Kivero for twenty
yards. A 24-yard run by Ikejiani on the next play got the bears
down to the indians 15. Two plays later, Bedwell connected with
Sandhu for a 12-yard touchdown to give the bears a 28-7
advantage.
The indians appeared to be back in the game as Lautamatti hit Matt
Epperson for a 10-yard touchdown with just 45 seconds remaining in the
half to cut the lead to 28-14. The bears would answer right back
as two nice runs by Ikejiani and Bedwell moved them inside the indians
30. A twenty-four yard pass from Bedwell to Penttila set up a
four-yard touchdown run by Ikejiani with just seconds remaining in the
half to give the bears a 34-7 halftime lead.
2nd Half
The bears received the kickoff to start the second half and on just the
second play of their drive, Bedwell found Sandhu streaking down the
sideline for a 45-yard gain. Two plays later, Bedwell and
Penttila connected for a 10-yard gain to set up another short touchdown
run by Ikejiani. This one went for two yards. Bedwell's
conversion pass to Sandhu made it 42-14.
A second interception by Penttila halted the following indian drive at
the bears 32. A 43-yard run by Kivero highlighted a six play,
68-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by
Bedwell. Kivero's conversion run gave the bears a 50-14
lead. Early in the 4th quarter, Kuhlman hit a 20-yard field goal
for the indians to set the final margin of 50-17.
For the second straight week, the bears offense put up over 450 yards
of total offense. Bedwell led the way completing 11-of-16 passes
for 210 yards with three touchdowns. He also ran for 35 yards and
a score on five carries. Ikejiani ran for 106 yards and three
touchdowns on 15 carries. Kivero also chipped in on the ground
game with 65 yards on just five carries. Sandhu led the receiving
corp with 87 yards and two touchdowns on three receptions.
Penttila had three catches for 45 yards and a score, he also
intercepted two passes from his free safety position. Other
defensive standouts included Jari Suominen (5 tackles), Timo Vilja (5
tackles), and Lunden (4 tackles).
The 2007 Spaghetti Bowl will kickoff at Herralahti Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
on Sunday. The bears/saints met twice in the regular season with
Pori coming out on top 22-13 in the first meeting and 25-0 in the
second.
