Lucky Speedway fans, drivers take home prizes

PEORIA - A share in a heaping load of raffle prizes and two first-time feature wins were among the things the luckiest fans and drivers were awarded Saturday night at Peoria Speedway.
Cody Wisher started on the pole and established himself as the frontrunner in the Street Stock feature.
His solo spin exiting the second turn on lap 6, accompanied by the unrelated caution that occurred seconds later, created a topic for disagreement around the judges' stand as to where Wisher should be placed on the restart.
He started first, and held off hard charging Doug McKendrick to win a race shortened to eight laps after excessive caution delays.
"I thought I'd be put in back," a surprised Wisher said his pole-position restart. "I got real lucky. I had my guardian angel in the back seat tonight."
The win was Wisher's first in nine nights of racing at the Speedway.
Dan Dozard drove to claim his prize of a first feature win in Modified.
The fifth-year driver in the division started on the front row and found himself in the lead before the first official lap was complete.
Nick Neville, Darren Pennycuff and Jimmy Krulac each took a turn as Dozard's closest pursuer through the early stages. The final challenger was Joe Wyatt, who could do no better than stay a close second over the final four laps.
"He was going to have to pass me on the outside," Dozard said. "I wasn't coming off the bottom."
Steve Lance Jr. had the high lane around the quarter-mile dirt track mostly to himself in winning his second Late Model feature in three weeks.
Lance gained the lead on Lap 25 from his brother Tim, who went on to finish second for the eighth time in 10 weeks.
The first, fifth and last finisher in each feature event received a case of 3M High Power Brake Cleaner.
Mike Carroll earned a case by winning his fourth feature in Hornet.
Jim Carmody likely took one back to Dunlap after he slipped past Mike Jones on Lap 11 to win the Sportsman feature.
Amidst the racing was a fund-raising effort by Easter Seals. Raffle tickets were sold and a long list of items, including a Caterpillar, Inc., leather racing jacket, were given away.
Some lucky fans got to smash a whipped-cream pie into the face of a Speedway personality.
Drivers Todd Bennett, Tim Bennett, Steve Brandt Sr., Steve Brandt Jr., Chuck Barnes Jr. and official scorer Jody Binegar were among the willing targets.
