Like many anime to hit the English speaking world, Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters is more than an television series, it is a mass-market phenomenon. The world of Yu-Gi-Oh! contains a hit anime series, a popular Collectible Card Game (Duel Monsters,) and over a dozen video games selling worldwide. Yu-Gi-Oh! was created by Kazuki Takahashi in 1996, but did not hit the mainstream until a few years after that. Although most anime series become popular in America many years after they have already aired in Japan, making it seem like “old hat” to the Japanese, Yu-Gi-Oh was wildly popular across the globe at roughly the same time. This is due in part to the show’s marketability, and the producer’s desire to capitalize on the enormous success of the Pokemon franchise.

The anime is about a teenager, Yugi who is given an ancient artifact as a gift from his grandfather. This artifact, the Millennium Puzzle gives the owner immense power, provided they can solve it’s riddle. By using the power of the puzzle Yugi is able to transform into a legendary Duel Monsters player, and has never been beat in a game.

This talent is noticed by Seto Kaiba, heir to a vast fortune which he uses to fund his interest in the card game. After being defeated by Yugi, Seto vows revenge and for the rest of the series both are fierce rivals both in the game and in their everyday lives. Yugi is invited to a major Duel Monsters tournament on a a remote island, but he has no interest in joining the tournament. Pegasus, the tournament’s founder and creator of the card game, demands nothing short of the best competition, is angered by this and comes up with a way to make Yugi the enter the tournament. Using the Millennium Eye, a magic item similar to Yugi’s own Millennium Puzzle, Pegasus captures the soul of Yugi’s grandfather’s soul and imprisons it within the eye. If he hopes to ever have his grandfather back to normal Yugi must enter and win the tournament. This begins Yugi’s journey to not only save his grandfather, but to learn the mysterious origins of the Millennium Puzzle.

The American version Yu-Gi-Oh is a stark contrast from it’s Japanese counterpart. Many of the series’ darker themes are simply cut out, and it is obvious that the dubbing staff put very little effort into trying to cover it up. As a result the show is geared more towards the very young than the teenagers or pre-teen audience that the Japanese version was originally intended for.
