Chobits Episode 14 - Chii Goes to the Ocean

OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Let Me Be With You"

*** Tokyo ***

Around the city, sunshine filters through the trees. The streets shimmer with heat. There is an advertisement for "SUN OIL" brand suntan oil on a building's wall. (Wow, original name.)

HIDEKI, voice-over: It's almost summer. This'll be my eighteenth summer. But, for someone like me, who failed the entrance exam.... It doesn't matter whether it's summer or any other season. First, study. Second, study.

*** Classroom ***

Hideki is in the classroom, alone with Shimizu. She is looking at a slip of paper with the grade "D" on it.

SHIMIZU: Your grades aren't getting any better.

Hideki hangs his head.

HIDEKI: S.... S.... Sumimasehn.

SHIMIZU: Don't look so glum. It's okay. If you study all summer, then you'll have time for some vacation by fall.

He grabs her hand hopefully.

HIDEKI: R.... Really?

SHIMIZU: It'll be okay!

HIDEKI: I guess so! Summer is a prefect chance to redeem myself. I'll do my best!

SHIMIZU: That's right, ganbatte!

HIDEKI: Hai!

*** Beach ***

Hideki is standing near the ocean, wearing a t-shirt and jeans as usual. He stares out at the water, as waves come in and out, burying a crab, then washing it away.

YUMI'S VOICE: Senpai!!!!

He turns to see her running toward him in a cute orange bathing suit.

HIDEKI: Yumi-chan!

YUMI: How does this swimsuit look? I bought it just for today!

HIDEKI: It looks good, really good!

SHIMIZU: I'm so glad that it's sunny!

Shimizu is wearing a bikini and one of those wrap-around things. She shields her eyes from the sun. Hideki blushes and gulps.

HIDEKI: Shimizu-sensei....

Hibiya steps toward them wearing a conservative white swimsuit and carrying a parasol.

HIBIYA: Chii-chan is done changing.

HIDEKI: Hibiya-san!!

He collapses with a nosebleed. The screen behind him says "SUMMER VACATION." Chii runs toward them wearing a blue swimsuit with a white stripe down the sides.

HIDEKI: Chii...?

CHII: Hideki! Hideki!

Note: God, Chii's voice is irritating me.

HIDEKI: Chii!

She hugs him. Her breasts push against Hideki's chest, and he shrieks.

HIDEKI, thinking: I can't believe I really came to the beach. I'm a failure after all. Is it really okay for me to be here? I got a D.... I shouldn't be spending my time like this.

He imagines the four girls in their swimsuits. Hideki remembers talking to Shimizu.

*** Retrospect - Classroom***

SHIMIZU: That's right, ganbatte!

HIDEKI: Hai!

Shimizu starts to leave.

SHIMIZU: Well, then, let's meet at the beach this weekend.

HIDEKI: Huh?

SHIMIZU: The beach. You heard from Shinbo-kun, right?

*** Retrospect - Hallway ***

Hideki is talking to Shinbo.

SHINBO: That's right. You're going to come, aren't you?

HIDEKI: What? I don't have that kind of money.

SHINBO: Just listen. Kokobunji always goes to his beach house this time of year, and we're going with him. So it's free. Free.

HIDEKI: Free? But we failed the entrance exam! We don't have time to go to the beach!

Hibiya comes up behind them.

HIBIYA: Oh, Motosuwa-san?

HIDEKI: Hai?

Hibiya holds up the blue swimsuit Chii was wearing.

HIBIYA: Will this be okay for Chii-chan's swimsuit? Although I've used it before....

SHINBO: Kanrinin-san was invited, too. And also that girl, Yumi-chan. Everyone said they were going to go. Are you really not going to go?

HIBIYA: Oh, Motosuwa-san, are you busy?

Hideki slams Shinbo's door.

HIDEKI: Iee, I'm not busy!

He chuckles nervously.

*** Reality ***

Chii stares at Hideki.

CHII: Chii?

HIDEKI, thinking: A failure like me, sailing through summer.... Will I be okay?

He chuckles.

TITLE SCREEN

SHIMIZU: Motosuwa-kun, she's a persocon, right?

HIDEKI: Hai. Chii, greet Yumi-chan and Shimizu-sensei.

Chii bows.

CHII: Kon ban wa.

HIDEKI: Oh, so close! But it's still afternoon. You have to use the afternoon greeting, Chii.

CHII: Chii....

She bows again.

CHII: Konnichiwa.

Yumi and Shimizu bow.

YUMI and SHIMIZU: Konnichiwa!

Hideki pats Chii's head.

HIDEKI: That's right! Good job, Chii.

SHIMIZU: What a kawaii persocon.

YUMI: Nice to meet you, Chii-chan!

Chii grins. Shinbo yells from down the beach, where he, Minoru, Yuzuki, and Minoru's four other persocons are sitting under umbrellas.

SHINBO: Hey, Motosuwa! How long are you going to stand there?! Hurry up and change!

SUMOMO: We're losing daylight!

Note: Direct translation: "We're going to lose playing time!" but I thought this was better.

MINORU: Take care of Motosuwa-san.

He snaps his fingers, and the four persocons march off. Hideki looks surprised as the four persocons drag him off.

CHII: Chii?

Somewhere, there is a zipping sound, and Hideki shouts. On the beach, Sumomo is wearing a little orange-and-yellow striped bathing suits and a big pink lifesaver around her waist as she stretches.

SUMOMO: One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.

*** Later ***

Hideki and Chii sit under an umbrella.

CHII: A lot of water.

HIDEKI: Yep. This is called "umi."

Note: Umi = ocean. Duh.

CHII: "Umi"?

HIDEKI: Right.

CHII, thoughtfully: Umi.

Yumi stands up.

YUMI: Well, then. Why don't we all play something?

HIDEKI: Yeah!

He and Chii get up and run off.

MINORU: Oh, the water around here has been pretty deep lately, so be careful!

HIDEKI: Got it!

He, Chii, and Yumi run into the water.

SHINBO: They seem pretty excited.

SHIMIZU: Well, we came here to have fun, after all.

She goes after them. Shinbo grins. Sumomo is buffetted about by a wave, and shrieks. Yumi splashes water on Hideki, and he gets some in his mouth.

HIDEKI: It's salty!

YUMI: That's what you get when you don't pay attention!

Hideki coughs.

CHII: "Salty"?

HIDEKI: Yeah, yeah. The water in the ocean is salty, Chii.

CHII: Salty water....

HIDEKI: Now that I think of it, is it safe for persocons to get saltwater on them?

CHII: Chii?

YUMI: Persocons are waterproof, so don't worry.

HIDEKI: I see. That makes sense.

He chuckles.

YUMI: You're even kind to persocons, senpai.

HIDEKI: Eh?

Yumi catches him off guard, and splashes him.

YUMI: Gotcha!

HIDEKI: Now you've done it!

He splashes her back, and she giggles.

YUMI: It's cold!

Shimizu is standing in the water near them.

SHIMIZU: Hey, you want to go swim over there?

YUMI: Sounds good!

HIDEKI: Uhhh, I can't swim. I'll pass.

Yumi and Shimizu stare at him in disbelief.

YUMI and SHIMIZU: Stop joking around.

HIDEKI: I'm serious.

SHIMIZU: Well, then, I won't let you get away tonight, Motosuwa-kun.

HIDEKI, blushing: "Tonight"? What do you mean?

SHIMIZU: I'll give you a special lesson. Be prepared!

HIDEKI, happily: H.... Hai!

Minoru is working on a portable computer pad as Hideki comes back.

HIDEKI: Having a beach house at a place like this.... Your house is amazing, Minoru-kun.

MINORU: I don't really think so.

HIDEKI: Isn't this what they call a private beach?

MINORU: Of course not. It's just that no one else is here right now.

Shinbo and the girls (except for the fair-skinned Hibiya) and playing around in the water.

MINORU: All right, check complete.

Yuzuki unplugs a cable from her ear.

YUZUKI: Hai.

HIDEKI: Aren't we a bother?

MINORU: Why do you ask?

HIDEKI: Well, we're really loud, for instance.

MINORU: Well, you guys are kinda noisy.

YUZUKI: It really is quite loud this year, Minoru-sama.

She hands him a book, and he opens it.

MINORU: I suppose so. But I guess it's okay.

HIDEKI: I see.

Shinbo takes away Minoru's book.

SHINBO: Yo. You didn't come here just to study, did you?

SUMOMO: Let's play, let's play!

HIBIYA: Let's go.

They stand in front of him expectantly. Finally, they all play volleyball. Minoru, Shinbo, and Yuzuki are on one team, and Hideki, Shimizu, and Chii are on the other. Shinbo spikes the ball hard.

SHINBO: Here I go!

Shimizu hits it up. Hideki gets ready to set the ball to Chii.

HIDEKI: Here it comes, Chii!

From the sidelines, Yumi, Hibiya, and Sumomo cheer.

YUMI, HIBIYA, SUMOMO: Ganbatte!

The ball sails over to Chii, and she catches it. The peppy music that was playing stops abruptly.

CHII: A ball. Hideki gave it to me.

*** Later ***

They eat flavored ice.

ALL: Itadakimasu!

Hideki makes a pained expression (ice cream headache), and Chii imitates him.

*** Later ***

The sun is setting. Everyone is wearing kimonos.

SHINBO: All right, it's about to start!

SUMOMO: All right!

A bottle rocket shoots up and explodes. When it's dark, the girls are all sitting by the water's edge as Chii holds a sparkler.

HIDEKI: Is this what they call happiness?

SHINBO: Looks like you're in a good mood now.

HIDEKI: Yeah. But I haven't forgotten about studying, either! I'm going to spend this summer studying!

SHINBO: Hai, hai.

*** Inside ***

Yumi, Chii, Hibiya, Yuzuki, Minoru, and Hideki are playing a card game (sorry, I'm SO not familiar with card games), and Hideki puts a Joker on the pile.

Note: It was also the last card. Does that mean anything? Am I stupid? YOU BETCHA!

HIDEKI: I lost!

YUMI: Let's play poker next.

Hideki sneaks away. He walks down a hallway carrying his notebook.

HIDEKI: Let's see.... Where might Shimizu-sensei's room be?

He stops in front of a doorway.

HIDEKI: Ah, here it is!

He raises his hand to knock, and gulps.

SHIMIZU, in past: I'll give you a special lesson tonight.

HIDEKI: A lesson at night.... [dreamily] Maybe she'll be really friendly, and....

He knocks on the door.

SHIMIZU'S VOICE: Hai?

HIDEKI: It's M.... Motosuwa.

SHIMIZU'S VOICE: Ah, it's open. Please come in.

HIDEKI: Hai.

*** Shimizu's Room ***

Hideki enters. He gasps when he sees Shimizu in her kimono.

SHIMIZU: What's wrong? Come on in.

He stares at her for a moment. The screen behind him says (I think) "PRIVATE LESSON."

HIDEKI: H.... Hai!

He walks mechanically over to her. She sits at her table, and opens an English textbook.

SHIMIZU: Let's see, looks like no one is absent....

HIDEKI: Huh?

He looks over at Shinbo in the seat next to him.

SHINBO: Yo.

Hideki hangs his head.

SHIMIZU: Now let's start our lesson.

HIDEKI, sadly: Hai.

EYECATCH

*** Kitchen ***

Hideki and Chii enter. Shinbo is making coffee.

HIDEKI: Okayo!

SHINBO: Oh, you're awake?

He takes a blue tube out of his shirt pocket.

SHINBO: Use some of this.

He tosses it to Hideki.

HIDEKI: What is this?

SHINBO: Antioxidant for persocons.

He remembers Sumomo and Yuzuki rubbing the antioxidant on themselves the day before.

SHINBO: Salty air, salt water, and sand are machines' natural enemies. It's important to use it while we're here.

HIDEKI: But I thought persocons were waterproof.

They're now sitting with Minoru, who sips a cup of coffee.

MINORU: That's true, but.... You should use it just to be safe. Just apply it all over her body. It's simple.

HIDEKI: I.... I see. All over, huh?

He looks at Chii.

CHII: Chii?

HIDEKI: I have to?! I have to apply it to Chii?!

He looks at her again. A voice counts down: 3, 2, 1....

HIDEKI: I can't! I can't do something like that!!!!

MINORU: Then teach her how to apply it to herself.

HIDEKI: Oh! That's it!

*** Outside ***

Hibiya and Shimizu are out on the balcony, looking out at something. Yumi comes out onto the balcony, rubbing her eyes.

YUMI: Ohayo gozaimasu.

HIBIYA: Ohayo gozaimasu!

YUMI: Did something happen?

The girls are watching Hideki, Minoru, and Shinbo down on the deck, trying to explain to Chii how to apply the antioxidant.

HIDEKI: Let's see.... First you take some cream like this....

He pours some into his hand. Chii tries, but squeezes too hard and it sprays all over.

HIDEKI: Ah, not like that!

CHII: Chii?

HIBIYA: Motosuwa-san! Would you like me to help?

HIDEKI: O.... Onegaishimasu! [to Chii] Stay right here.

He goes inside. Hibiya leaves the balcony.

*** Beach ***

Sumomo is playing in the surf.

SUMOMO: Paddle, paddle, paddle. Paddle, paddle.

Yumi, Shinbo, Shimizu, and three of the maids are playing volleyball. Hibiya watches Hideki and Chii walking along the water. Chii sees some shells, and kneels down.

CHII: Hideki, what's this?

HIDEKI: Let's see. Oh, that's a shell, Chii.

CHII: "Shell."

She points to a different-looking shell.

CHII: Then what's this?

HIDEKI: Let's see.... Oh, that's a shell, too.

CHII: "Shell." Is that a shell, too?

HIDEKI: That's right.

One of the shells moves, and a hermit crab pokes out of it and crawls away.

CHII: A walking shell?

HIDEKI: That's not it, that's not it.... Let's see, what were those things called again...? Let's see....

SHIMIZU: Hermit crab. It's a hermit crab, Motosuwa-kun.

She's suddenly standing near them.

HIDEKI: Right, right, a hermit crab! It's a hermit crab, Chii.

CHII: "Hermit crab."

SHIMIZU: Are you teaching her words?

HIDEKI: Yeah. There are a lot of things Chii doesn't know yet, so I have to teach her.

CHII: Hideki.

She holds up a big, gross glob of kelp.

HIDEKI: Kelp?! Maybe some buds?!

SHIMIZU: Just tell her it's seaweed.

HIDEKI: That's right. It's seaweed, seaweed, Chii.

CHII: "Seaweed." This is seaweed. Chii?

She stands up and points down the beach.

CHII: What's that?

She starts to walk toward it.

HIDEKI: Hold on, Chii...!

CHII: Hideki, what is that?

He starts to follow her.

SHIMIZU: Do you want me to help you?

HIDEKI: Ah, onegaishimasu!

Shinbo comes back to the umbrellas and lays down.

SHINBO: Oh, I'm sleepy. I think I'll sleep a bit.

Down the beach, Chii discovers a starfish and a fiddler crab. She touches Hideki's shoulder.

CHII: Hideki, what's that?

She points out at the water, where there is some splashing. Dolphins are jumping in and out of the water.

HIDEKI: Dolphins!!!! Dolhpins, dolhpins, dolphins!

SHIMIZU: Chii-chan, you're really good at finding things!

CHII: Chii?

Hideki is back by the umbrellas.

HIDEKI: Hey, everyone, there are dolphins!

Minoru doesn't look up from his book.

MINORU: Yeah. They show up every once in a while.

HIDEKI: I see! That's amazing! I've only seen dolphins on television!

SHIMIZU: I've only seen them in aquariums!

SHINBO: Ehhh, they're in a place like this?

YUMI: It's a little far, but I want to see them!

SHINBO: It'd be nice if we could see them up close.

HIDEKI: I wonder if they'll come closer!

HIBIYA: Closer? But if they come too close to the bay, they might not be able to get back out.

HIDEKI: Th.... That's right....

SHIMIZU: But we rarely get a chance like this. I want to see them!

Hideki nods.

SHINBO: Then why don't se swim out to the coast? It's not too far.

Hideki hangs his head.

YUMI: Senpai, could it be.... That you weren't joking yesterday when you said you couldn't swim?

HIDEKI: If I could swim, I wouldn't have said something like that.

SHINBO: But you can at least breaststroke, right?

Hideki shakes his head.

SHINBO: Seriously?

CHII: "Seriously"?

HIBIYA: Well, everyone has something they aren't good at.

YUMI: That's true, senpai!

SHIMIZU: It's good that you aren't tested on swimming in cram school, don't you think?

CHII: Hideki cannot swim! Is that amazing? Is Hideki amazing?

Hideki collapses.

HIDEKI: The dolphins.... They're right in front of my eyes.

Minoru closes his book.

MINORU: I guess it can't be helped.

*** Boat ***

Yuzuki and Minoru are at the helm of a fancy speedboat, with everyone else in the back.

HIDEKI: Amazing. A private cruiser.

SHINBO: Y.... Yeah.

HIDEKI: I'm getting kind of upset. Is it really okay for him to have something like this? Isn't it a little unfair?

He glances out at the water.

HIDEKI: Amazing!!!!

The dolphins are swimming right alongside the boat.

MINORU: If you want to go dolphin-watching, this is the best way.

EVERYONE: Uah!!!!

The dolphins leap out of the water.

HIDEKI: Wow! [to Chii] Did you just see that?!

CHII: Hideki, is it fun to watch the dolphins splashing?

HIDEKI: Of course! Look! Wow, that's so cool!

CHII: Splashing. Fun. Chii will splash, too.

She jumps off the boat.

YUZUKI: Chii-san?

HIDEKI, horrified: Chii?

MINORU: Oh, no!

YUMI: Chii-chan is...! W.... Where is she?!

SHINBO: Motosuwa, we have to help her!

HIDEKI: Huh? But she's waterproof, right?

SHINBO: Baka, the waterproofing is useless in water this deep!!!!

HIDEKI: Chii....

He jumps off the boat.

SHINBO: Motosuwa!!!!

YUMI: Senpai, I thought you said you couldn't swim!!!!

The dolphins swim circles around the sinking Chii. Her hair floats up gracefully around her. She looks at a dolphin, and smiles. Hideki kicks through the water, a determined expression on his face. Chii sees him, smiles, and reaches out to hug him. Hideki passes out.

*** Beach House ***

Hideki is lying in bed. Everyone is standing nearby.

HIDEKI: Where am I?

SHINBO: Kokobunji's beach house.

YUMI: Oh, senpai, please don't do something that reckless again!

SHIMIZU: That's right. Although it is like you to spontaneously try to help someone.

HIDEKI: Sumimasehn.... Where's Chii?!

He sees her standing next to Yuzuki.

CHII: Hideki.

HIDEKI, relieved: You're safe.

CHII: Chii is fine.

MINORU: It appears that she's not flooded internally.

Chii walks over and takes Hideki's hand.

CHII: Is Hideki angry? Did Chii do something bad?

HIDEKI: I'm not mad. I'm glad you're safe.

Chii grins.

CHII: Chii. Hideki!

She hugs him.

SHINBO: She really is a mysterious persocon. If a normal one dove underwater, its insides would be flooded with water, which would cause big problems.

MINORU: That's true.

SHIMIZU: But if Chii-chan wasn't okay, there would be a bigger problem.

YUMI: That's true.

HIDEKI: Huh?

MINORU: Chii-san was the one who saved Motosuwa-san.

HIDEKI: I see. Arigatou, Chii.

He pats her head.

*** Beach ***

Hideki and Chii sit under an umbrella. Sumomo does stretching exercises.

SUMOMO: One, two, three, four. Two, two....

*** Tokyo ***

The SUN OIL poster falls down.

HIDEKI, voice-over: My summer is over.

Shimizu teaches in the classroom.

HIDEKI, voice-over: First, study. Second, study. This summer was my chance to redeem myself.... To improve my grade.

Hideki looks at his latest grade slip. He has an E.

HIDEKI, voice-over: And my grade went down.

CLOSING THEME MUSIC: "Ningyo Hime"
