Chobits Episode 13 - Chii Plays

OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Let Me Be With You"

*** Yorokonde Tavern ***

Hideki is standing in the back room, holding a DVD player.

HIDEKI: R-Really? A DVD player? Is it really okay if I borrow it?

TENCHOU: Yeah. You're old enough now, and.... You know.... Listen, don't tell Yumi about this.

HIDEKI: All right.

The tenchou whispers in Hideki's ear.

TENCHOU: The electronics store in front of the station has a good selection. And everything is 20% off this week!

HIDEKI: Really?

TENCHOU: And....

He whispers something.

TENCHOU: And...! And also!

Yumi enters.

YUMI: Ah, senpai!

Hideki and the tenchou panic and flail their arms in fright. Yumi notices the DVD player.

YUMI: Eh? Are you going to let senpai borrow that, otou-san?

TENCHOU: Uh.... Yeah! He says he doesn't have a DVD player.

YUMI: Oh, I see. So, senpai, what are you going to watch?

HIDEKI: Uh, well, maybe action movies.... Or maybe some English learning software.... And lots of other stuff.

TENCHOU: Yeah, yeah, you're going to watch lots of other stuff, right? Lots of stuff?

HIDEKI: H.... Hai.

They chuckle together.

*** DVD Rental Shop ***

Hideki browses the shelves carrying the DVD player in a paper bag.

HIDEKI: That's right, if it's a DVD player, I'll be able to skip to any part I want.... Without rewinding, either.

Hideki pauses at the entrance to the adult section, and looks around for anyone who might be watching. He looks at a shelf full of dirty films.

HIDEKI: N.... Now, which one should I get? Maybe this one....

MINORU: Motosuwa-san.

Hideki jumps up and turns around to see Minoru and Yuzuki standing behind him.

HIDEKI: Agggh!

YUZUKI: Kon ban wa, Motosuwa-sama.

HIDEKI: Oh, it's just Minoru-kun and Yuzuki-san. What are you doing here?

MINORU: Buying the new net game that just went on sale.

HIDEKI: "Net game"?

Minoru holds up a DVD case with an RPG game-type cover.

MINORU: Network game. A game you can play with many people on the Internet.

HIDEKI: An Internet game?

MINORU: You can play with a lot of people and you can also play with your persocon.

HIDEKI, happily: Eh? Does that mean I can play with Chii?

YUZUKI: Yes. If you have the software and the hardware, all you have to do is connect your persocon to it.

HIDEKI: Wow, really? Playing a game with Chii, huh?

Minoru holds out the game.

MINORU: Motosuwa-san, why don't you give it a try? I'll get one for you, too. This is a popular edition, so if you rent one, you get another free.

HIDEKI, excitedly: Ehhhh? Is that so? [dejectedly] But I don't have the hardware....

Minoru points to the DVD player in his bag.

MINORU: That DVD player can run net games.

HIDEKI: Really?

MINORU: I'll wait for you at the cash register. Get whatever DVDs you wanted.

HIDEKI: Okay. Hey, what are you talking about?!

They walk away. Hideki peeks back at the shelf.

HIDEKI: I didn't.... Really.... Want these.

He gulps and walks away.

TITLE SCREEN

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii examines the disk of the net game. It's called "BRAVE QUEST ONLINE."

CHII: Hideki, what's this?

Hideki is hooking the DVD player up to the TV.

HIDEKI: Software for a net game. I borrowed it from Minoru-kun today.

CHII: "Net game"?

HIDEKI: Yeah. You can play with many people on the Internet.

CHII: Able to play with many people....

Chii looks at Hideki through the hole in the disk.

CHII: Will Chii be able to play with Hideki, too?

HIDEKI: Yeah. We can play together.

CHII: Together with Hideki?

Hideki finishes hooking up the DVD player.

HIDEKI: All right, setup is complete! Chii, do you want to play the net game with me?

Chii grins and nods.

CHII: Yeah! Chii wants to play the net game with Hideki.

HIDEKI: All right!

Hideki hums as he plugs the DVD player into Chii's ear and puts the disk into the player. The title screen comes up.

CHII, happily: Game, game, a game with Hideki. Game, game, a game with Hideki. Game, game, a game with Hideki.

Hideki chuckles.

HIDEKI: Don't get too excited, it's about to start.

CHII: Chii!

Hideki pushes a button on his controller, and a screen saying "Please connect to network," pops up.

HIDEKI: Network connection?

He pushes another button. A screen asking for login ID and login password comes up.

HIDEKI: Huh? What's a login ID?

He puts down the controller and flips through the manual.

CHII: Chii?

*** Minoru's House ***

MINORU, on phone: Ah, Motosuwa-san. Have you tried out the game?

HIDEKI'S VOICE: Well, I read the instructions but I don't understand a thing.

Back in his apartment, Hideki continues flipping through the manual.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: It says something about a login ID and password.

MINORU: Motosuwa-san, did you ever get an e-mail address?

HIDEKI'S VOICE: No, I never got one.

MINORU: As I thought. You need to subscribe to the provider and get an e-mail account in order to play a net game.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: Ehhh?! Really? Where do I go to subscribe?

MINORU: The provider's telephone number is on the back of the instructions. First, try calling them up on your screen.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: Okay. [pause] What? This is weird....

MINORU: What is it?

HIDEKI'S VOICE: It says I can't call because my phone is busy.

MINORU: Well, of course. You're using your phone line to talk to me right now.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: Huh?

He chuckles nervously.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: I'll read the instructions and try again.

MINORU: Ganbatte.

He hangs up and leans back in his chair.

Note: Interestingly, when Minoru hangs up, it invloves only touching his computer screen. Ah, the future.

MINORU: I guess it'll still be a while before he starts playing.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

HIDEKI: What is this license fee? What?! It's going to cost money? Oh, the first month is free. Huh? "Broadband adapter"? Oh, forget it. Huh? The password is wrong? Why? Let's see, let's see....

Chii imitates his frustrated movements.

*** Classroom ***

Hideki is snoring on his desk.

SHIMIZU: I guess you can't really blame him for sleeping like this.

HIDEKI, in his sleep: The password is still wrong....

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Shinbo is controlling the game.

SHINBO: Geez, you should at least be able to do the setup yourself.

HIDEKI: Sorry! I read the instructions, but I couldn't understand anything.

The screen pops up with the words "Connection complete."

SHINBO: Okay, done.

HIDEKI: Huh? The connection's all set?

SHINBO: Yeah.

CHII: Will I be able to play with Hideki?

HIDEKI: Looks like it! Heh heh, I guess I should have asked Shinbo in the first place. All right, let's start now.

CHII: Chii!

SHINBO: Have fun. Later.

He puts Sumomo on his shoulder and stands up, yawning.

SUMOMO: So tired desu.

HIDEKI: Ohhh, Shinbo, you should play with us!

SHINBO: Eh? I was planning to go check what we're going to be doing tomorrow in cram school.

HIDEKI: You should relax every once in a while. Take a break. Come on, let's play!

He sits down next to Hideki.

SHINBO: All right, I guess I will.

SUMOMO: Guess I will.

Chii and Sumomo get plugged in.

HIDEKI: Chii, let's start.

CHII: Chii!

HIDEKI: All right, game, start!

He pushes the start button on his controller. Music begins.

*** Brave Quest Online ***

Hideki is suddenly standing in a cobblestone street. There is a sword on his hip.

HIDEKI: It's starting! I can jump, and here is my sword! And my face expression changes in the game, too! How cool!

SHINBO'S VOICE: Oh, you're obviously an amateur.

Hideki looks around.

SHINBO'S VOICE: The game uses our voices to change our expressions and actions.

Shimizu appears next to Hideki, wearing a blue cloak and carrying a wooden staff.

HIDEKI: Ahhh! I'm sorry, Shimizu-sensei! I'll stop playing right now!

SHIMIZU, with Shinbo's voice: Baka, it's me.

Note: I'm going to start calling him "Shinbo," even though he'll continue to look like Shimizu.

HIDEKI: Eh? Shinbo? Why does your character look exactly like Shimizu-sensei?

SHINBO: It looks similar because I made it really fast.

HIDEKI: Ohhh. But that face and that voice don't go together at all....

SUMOMO'S VOICE: Sorry to keep you waiting!

She appears between them, only she's the same height as Hideki. Scary.

SUMOMO: Let's start our adventure!

HIDEKI: Huge!!!!

SHINBO: You can be any size you want inside the game.

HIDEKI: I.... I see.

He looks around.

HIDEKI: Huh?

SHINBO: What's wrong?

HIDEKI: Chii.... Chii isn't here.

They run down the street.

HIDEKI: CHii! Where are you? Chii!

*** Reality ***

Hideki shakes Chii. She doesn't respond.

HIDEKI: Hey, Chii? Where'd you go?

SHINBO: It's no use. All her functions are locked when she's playing a game.

*** Brave Quest Online ***

HIDEKI: Really? Then what happened to Chii? Why is she the only one who's not here?

MINORU: She's probably connected to another server.

Minoru and Yuzuki are with them. Both look normal.

MINORU: Looks like you finally got connected, Motosuwa-san.

HIDEKI: Minoru-kun!

MINORU: This game uses different cities as different servers, which limits the number of players who can play. Basically, this city is full. It's possible that Chii-san was sent to a different one.

HIDEKI: Isn't that bad?! I have to find her!

MINORU: Calm down. The cities are about 20 minutes apart, and there are 15 cities in this game, so....

HIDEKI: That doesn't matter! I can't leave Chii by herself! I'm going!

He starts to run off, and bumps into a little girl with pigtails.

HIDEKI: Oh, sumimasehn.

GIRL, with deep masculine voice: This is why I don't like amateurs.

HIDEKI: A man?

MAN: This game is hard to play when guys like you keep showing up. Don't do anything weird.

HIDEKI: What did you say?!

MINORU: Calm down, Motosuwa-san. [to man] This game doesn't belong to you. Anyone can play however they like.

MAN: Heh. It seems you're acting heroic as usual, Kokobunji-kun.

MINORU: You know me?

MAN: You're a celebrity on the Internet. Well, go play with that amateur. See you later!

He skips off.

HIDEKI: What's up with him?

MINORU: There are lots of bad-mannered guys like him on the net.

HIDEKI: I see. There's no time for this! Wait for me, Chii!

He runs off.

SHINBO: Hey, Motosuwa!

Hideki continues running.

HIDEKI: Chii! Chii, where are you?

He trips.

EYECATCH

Hideki is running across a grassy field.

HIDEKI: Chii! Where are you?! Chii! Just wait, I'll find you!

Transparent green blobs with beady eyes (called Jellies in Unicorn Jelly, but I'm not sure if they're original creations of Miss Reitz or not) come out of some nearby woods and bounce toward him. Hideki draws his sword and runs at them.

HIDEKI: Here I go!!!!

His sword doesn't cut the Jellies.

HIDEKI: Wha...?

The Jelly he tried to slice jumps on him, followed by all the Jellies.

HIDEKI: Hold on! Attacking all at once is cheating!

A blast of fire comes toward him and burns away the Jellies. Hideki sits up and sees that Minoru created the fire.

MINORU: Swords don't work against those.

SUMOMO: We should read the instructions next time!

HIDEKI: I see....

He sheathes his sword.

SHINBO: Does this mean that this is...?

HIDEKI: Yeah, this is my first time. I had to take care of the cows back when I was in high school, so I didn't have time for games.

SUMOMO: And running off on your own is dangerous, it's reckless, it's stupid!

HIDEKI: Quiet!!!!

He continues running.

SHINBO: Hey, don't go alone!

HIDEKI: If there are a lot of dangerous monsters like that, I can't leave Chii alone!

MINORU: It's just a game.

SUMOMO: Just a game.

Hideki runs along a rocky ledge, and the rocks give way beneath him. He falls into a huge spider web. The spider comes toward him.

HIDEKI: Back off, get away!

Hideki sneaks cautiously down the hallway of what appears to be a castle or a dungeon. He steps on a block, and it sinks down (like in.... Uh, whichever Indiana Jones movie that was. Temple of Doom? Last Crusade? I don't think it was Raiders, but maybe.... ^^). A metal cage comes down around Hideki. Later, Hideki is in a cave, and a cool fire-breathing dragon looms in front of him. He runs away as a blast of fire is sent at him. Minoru, Yuzuki, and Shinbo peek out from behind a rock.

MINORU: Geez, he's completely burning himself out.

Sumomo peeks out.

SUMOMO: It's dangerous, it's reckless, it's stupid!

HIDEKI: Quiet!!!!

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

The sky goes from dark to light. The TV screen shows that the game is being saved. Hideki has dark circles under his eyes.

HIDEKI: I couldn't find her....

Shinbo is asleep in a sitting position. Sumomo yawns and stretches.

SUMOMO: Stopping game. Good job, everyone.

She goes to sleep against Shinbo's knee. Chii regains consciousness.

CHII: Chii? Chii....

HIDEKI: Oh, Chii! Where'd you go?

CHII: Chii doesn't know. But Chii could hear Hideki's voice.

HIDEKI: My voice?

CHII: But Hideki wasn't there.

HIDEKI: We'll play again later this evening, Chii. I'm sure we'll end up together next time.

Chii grins and nods.

CHII: Chii!

*** Outside ***

Hibiya is sweeping. Hideki and Shinbo walk by.

HIBIYA: Oh!

HIDEKI, sleepily: Ohayo gozaimasu....

He yawns. Hibiya giggles.

HIBIYA: Itte rashai!

*** Classroom ***

Hideki and Shinbo are snoring on their desks.

SHIMIZU: Well, it looks like the two of you are sleeping well.

HIDEKI, in his sleep: Where are you, Chii?

*** Yorokonde Tavern ***

Hideki yawns as he puts on his Yorokonde jacket.

HIDEKI: Oh, geez. I slept through class again. I wonder what will happen if this continues....

The tenchou pops up behind Hideki.

TENCHOU: Motosuwa-kun....

HIDEKI: Hai! Yokokonde!

TENCHOU: Well, how was it? Are you having fun?

HIDEKI: Huh? What are you talking about?

TENCHOU: The DVD player! You look pretty tired. Did you watch it all night?

HIDEKI: Iee, I haven't even bought any software yet.

TENCHOU: Nani?! You haven't watched anything yet?! That's no good!

He holds out some DVDs.

TENCHOU: Here, take these.

HIDEKI: Ohhhh! Tenchou, what are these?

TENCHOU: My prized collection. You can return them whenever you want.

HIDEKI, joyfully: Hai!

Yumi enters.

YUMI: What are you doing?

They scream and Hideki hides the DVDs behind his back.

YUMI: Oh, DVD software. Senpai, what did you borrow?

HIDEKI: Uh, action stuff, just action stuff....

The tenchou strikes a karate pose.

TENCHOU: Yeah, yeah, my prized action stuff.

They chuckle nervously.

*** Street ***

Hideki is on his way home. He yawns.

HIDEKI: I bet Chii is looking foward to playing that game.

He remembers that morning.

HIDEKI, in past: I'm sure we'll end up together next time.

He remembers Chii's happy expression.

CHII, in past: Chii!

HIDEKI: That's what I told her.... But I can't keep playing games with her every day. All right! It's not fair to Chii, but I'm going to sleep tonight. Then study really hard tomorrow!

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki enters. Chii is reading the game's instruction manual.

CHII, reading: "Magic." "Recovery." "Item."

HIDEKI: Tadaima!

CHII, happily: Okaerini, Hideki! Let's play the game today! Today Chii will be with Hideki.

HIDEKI: Uh, yeah.

*** Later ***

Shinbo and Sumomo are back in their old positions.

SHINBO: And why am I here again?

HIDEKI: It'll be fine. It's more fun with more people. And I'll be with Chii today.

CHII: Chii!

HIDEKI: All right, game, start!

*** Brave Quest Online ***

Hideki, Shinbo, and Sumomo appear on the cobblestone street. Hideki looks around.

HIDEKI: Huh? Agggh! Chii's not here again!

SHINBO: That's strange. The server's not that crowded. So it wasn't because of the number of players....

HIDEKI: Do you think she went to another city again?

SUMOMO: If the persocon's processing power is too high, it can stress out the server and it won't be able to play.

HIDEKI: Damn it!

He starts to run off.

SHINBO: Hey!

Hideki runs.

HIDEKI: Chii! Where are you?

*** Reality ***

SUMOMO: Warning, warning! Don't go off on your own!

Hideki clenches his teeth as he controls his character.

SHINBO: That's not the right way!

HIDEKI: Why you...! Take this! Huh?

SHINBO: I told you not to use magic so randomly.

HIDEKI: Wait for me, Chii!

Next to him, Chii is prefectly still. Her lips slowly form syllables.

CHII: Hi.... de.... ki.

*** Brave Quest Online ***

Hideki and the others are in a huge, cool fortress. A knight is attacking a huge beast with horns and wings, but is just swatted away. The knight disappears. A man with a staff and a cloak tries next, but disappears as well. Hideki, Sumomo, and Shinbo peek out from behind a column.

HIDEKI: What is that?

SUMOMO: We've made it to the boss.

SHINBO: You won't be able to defeat him.

HIDEKI: Is he that strong?

SHINBO: Yeah. If you look in magazines or on the Internet, no one has defeated him yet.

SUMOMO: Warning, warning! It's dangerous, it's dangerous! Please escape.

HIDEKI: If we pass through here, we can get to the other city.

He grabs his sword.

SHINBO: Hey, are you serious? Just give up. You can't defeat him.

HIDEKI: But.... Chii might be.... Chii might be waiting for me.

He draws his sword and runs at the beast. It swats him away, and Hideki's life points are cut in half.

SHINBO: Motosuwa! Oh, geez.... Sumomo!

SUMOMO: Aye!

They run out from behind the column and fire beams at the beast. Hideki gets up and starts to run at the beast again, but he sends out a blast of purple electricity. Hideki and the others' life points are down to almost nothing. Hideki sits up weakly.

HIDEKI: Damn it.... Is it over?

He groans.

HIDEKI: Chii!!!!

There is a bright light above the beast. Chii is glowing and floating above them.

HIDEKI: Ch.... Chii....

Chii floats down to eye level of the beast and opens her eyes. She glows very brightly, and the beast disappears. The light fades, and Chii floats down toward Hideki.

HIDEKI: Is that you, Chii?

He holds out his hand, and Chii holds out hers. Suddenly, the game shows a screen that says "Congratulations."

*** Reality ***

Hideki grabs the TV screen.

HIDEKI: Ah! Wait! Chii was.... Chii was right there! [to Shinbo] Rewind it!

SHINBO: How can I? It's not a video. But what was that? That did look like Chii-chan....

Sumomo jumps to her feet.

SUMOMO: Game complete! Good job!

CHII: Chiiii?

HIDEKI: That was amazing, Chii! You defeated the boss!

CHII: Chii? Chii doesn't remember anything.

HIDEKI: What could that mean...?

CHII: Chii?

*** Minoru's House ***

Minoru looks at an image of Chii glowing in the game.

MINORU: The missing Chii-san appeared out of nowhere, and beat the invincible boss character.

YUZUKI: Perhaps Chii-san has the processing power to cross over the servers.

MINORU: If so, her CPU would have to be as powerful as a supercomputer.

He looks thoughtful.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki puts the game disk back in its case.

CHII: Is Hideki going to stop playing?

HIDEKI: Yeah, we've already finished this. Besides, I'd get worried if you disappeared again.

CHII, sadly: Chii couldn't play together.

HIDEKI: Well, let's go play another game! One where you don't have to be connected to the Internet!

CHII: Chii! Yeah! Chii?

She notices the tenchou's DVDs hidden under a cabinet.

CHII: Here's another game.

HIDEKI: Aggh! That's tenchou's...!

CHII: Let's play this one, Hideki!

HIDEKI: Ch.... Chii, that's not a game!

CHII: Not a game?

HIDEKI: Well, you see....

CHII: Nani?

HIDEKI: Agggh!
