Chobits Episode 12 - Chii Ascertains

OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Let Me Be With You"

*** Street ***

Hideki steps out of a convenience store. The clerk shouts after him.

CLERK'S VOICE: Arigatou gozaimashita!

Hideki looks up at the dark sky as thunder rumbles.

HIDEKI: The weather doesn't look too good.... I shouldn't have listened to that story.

He remembers hearing Yuzuki tell a story.

YUZUKI'S VOICE: It seemed like rain would pour from the clouds on that dark and humid day.... When the woman was killed. The jealous wife used the signal to lure the woman to her room.... And on that day, the wife killed the woman. The woman's implacable spirit now remains in that room and sends that signal when the day is cloudy and damp. The signal they used to arrange a meeting..... Was to turn the light on and off, on and off. She continues waiting like that, for a new victim....

Hideki sees an apartment on the first floor of his building, with a purple curtain and a flickering light.

TITLE SCREEN

Hideki gasps and runs into the building, shrieking.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki runs in. Chii is reading her book.

CHII: Hideki! Okaerina- Chii?

Hideki runs into the closet and closes the door.

HIDEKI, thinking: Was that story about this building? N-N-No way! That's impossible!

He remembers Yuzuki telling the story again.

YUZUKI'S VOICE: Turning the light on and off, on and off.... That was the lovers' signal to meet.

Hideki imagines a woman seeing the signal and smiling.

YUZUKI'S VOICE: One day, the woman showed up like usual.... And found the man's wife holding a knife. It seemed like rain would pour from the clouds on that dark and humid day.... When the woman was killed.

Hideki imagines the wife stabbing the woman, then running out of the room.

YUZUKI: The woman crawled to the door to try to get help from the man.... The woman lay there silently, out of breath. The man never came to help. Yes, the woman was betrayed by the man. Killed by her lover's wife, the implacable woman....

Hideki imagines the woman's blood seeping out into the hallway. He remembers being in Minoru's house and listening to Yuzuki recite the story.

*** Retrospect - Minoru's House ***

YUZUKI'S VOICE: Now stays in that apartment, and on cloudy, humid days similar to the one on which she was killed, the woman sends that signal. The same one the man used to arrange a meeting. Turning the light on and off, on and off.... And in doing so, she waits for her next victim. In G Apartments, room 104.

Hideki shivers. Minoru looks at the computer screen.

MINORU: This site gathers information on rumors. On a site like this, a persocon can recite the stories for you, even without a monitor.

Hideki goes to the door.

MINORU: Motosuwa-san, you were the one who came and asked about the Internet.

HIDEKI: I.... I need to go to the bathroom.

*** Reality ***

HIDEKI, thinking: It's so similar to the story I heard at Minoru-kun's house. But it's not possible, right? Even if today is really cloudy.... And even if there was a flickering light in that empty room.... There's no way....

Shinbo knocks on the door.

SHINBO'S VOICE: Hey, Motosuwa!

He comes in.

SHINBO: Want to go take a bath? Huh? Motosuwa?

Chii points to the closet.

CHII: Hideki is in there.

SHINBO: What's this? You're playing around on a humid day like this? I'm opening the door.

He does, and Hideki falls out, his face dark.

SUMOMO: Master, this person kowai desu!

*** Later ***

SHINBO: Huh? The room 104 ghost story? Oh, I've been to that site before. But it's just an average horror story.

HIDEKI: It is? But I just saw it right now! The light in the first-floor room at the corner was going on and off.... It even said G Apartments, and this is Gabu Jougasaki.

SHINBO: Don't you think it's just your imagination?

He looks out the window at the room Hideki had seen.

SHINBO: Besides, that first-floor room at the corner is just an empty room. And the lights aren't flickering on and off.

HIDEKI: But they were a little while ago!

SHINBO: Motosuwa, you're such a chicken.

HIDEKI: Shinbo!!!!

He grabs Shinbo's collar.

SUMOMO: Kyaaa! Kowai desu!

HIDEKI: Stay overnight with me....

SHINBO: Why should I stay over in another guy's room?

HIDEKI: Please, just for today! Just one day! I won't do anything to you!

SHINBO: Take your hands off me!

The lights in the first-floor room start to flicker again, and a woman's silhouette can be seen.

*** Morning ***

Hideki's alarm goes off. He's huddled on the floor, with a blanket around his shoulders.

HIDEKI: It's already morning and I couldn't get any sleep.... Chii?

He looks around, but doesn't see her.

HIDEKI: Chii!

She is hanging upside-down from the light fixture.

CHII: Chii?

HIDEKI: Agggh!

He faints.

CHII: Hideki?

She drops to the floor and bends over Hideki.

CHII: Hideki.

Her eyes flash, and she hears a whirring sound.

CHII: Chii? I can hear something.

Chii walks out of the room. Hideki opens his eyes.

HIDEKI: Chii?

*** Hallway ***

Chii is on the ground floor of the building.

CHII: The sound disappeared.

She looks around, and sees a door. Hideki runs down the stairs.

HIDEKI: Chii! Why did you run out all of a sudden?

CHII: I heard something.

Hideki looks confused, then hears a thump behind him. He turns around, and sees a dark liquid seeping out from under one of the doors. He grabs Chii's hand and runs up the stairs.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki runs in and collapses, panting.

HIDEKI, thinking: What was that? What did I just see?

CHII: Hideki, what's wrong? Do you feel sick?

She looks worried.

HIDEKI: I'm fine, Chii!!!! It's nothing at all! I'm not scared of anything! N.... Now I'll be going outside! Don't go out on your own!

He steps out the door, closes it, and resumes his terrified expression.

HIDEKI, thinking: This.... This must be that ghost story....

He opens the door again.

HIDEKI: Oh! And don't go near that room!

He closes the door again.

HIDEKI, thinking: W.... What should I do? Maybe I should ask kanrinin-san.... But how do I ask her? "Is there a curse on this building?" or something like that? She's letting me stay here even though I'm behind on the rent, after all.... She'll think I'm making excuses!

Hibiya comes up the stairs next to him.

HIBIYA: Ah, Motosuwa-san, can you...?

HIDEKI: Agggh! The weather's great, isn't it? The clouds are so thick! And there's nothing weird going on at all! That's right, not at all! Well, anyway, thanks!

He marches away down the stairs. When he reaches the bottom of the stairs, he hears a creak coming from the room.

HIDEKI, thinking: Huh? Maybe it was just my imagination....

*** Tokyo ***

Hideki is walking down the street.

HIDEKI, thinking: That must have been it. As if something like that is possible, anyway.

*** Yorokonde Tavern ***

Hideki puts on his Yorokonde jacket.

HIDEKI, thinking: The apartment building's name that begins with a "G".... Could have been "Gonzales" or "Garndoo." The story is just way too far-fetched. "You open the door to find a woman grasping a knife."

He passes through a set of curtains and sees Yumi cutting vegetables. The knife gleams, and he passes out.

YUMI: Senpai! Are you okay, senpai?!

*** Alley ***

Hideki and Yumi are on break (I presume).

YUMI: I see. I'm sorry I scared you.

HIDEKI: No, no.... I'm sorry for talking about something so weird. I'm pretty pitiful, huh, thinking about curses and ghosts.... Heh heh heh....

YUMI: No you're not!!!! I'm afraid of black animals!

HIDEKI: Black ones? Why?

YUMI: Ravens, black cats, bats.... They're bad luck and are kinda scary, don't you think?

HIDEKI: I suppose they are.

YUMI: Everyone just pretends they're not scared when they really are. That's why you shouldn't worry about it.

She smiles cutely.

HIDEKI: Yumi-chan. Oh, I was just a little surprised. You don't have to worry.

YUMI: It's not that. That day when we went to the movies, I left without even saying anything to you....

HIDEKI: Uh, iee, umm....

YUMI: Really, gomen nasai!

HIDEKI: Iee! I just figured you had something to take care of. Don't worry about it. But if it's okay, maybe we could go somewhere together again....

YUMI: Yorokonde!

Something black falls down from the fire escape above them. It's a black cat. Yumi shrieks, and Hideki stumbles backward into a pile of beer crates, which fall on him.

YUMI: Senpai? Please wake up, senpai!!!!

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki is lying on the floor with a washcloth across his face.

SHINBO: Seriously, you should do something about being scared so easily.

HIDEKI: Ehhhh.

SHINBO: I don't know much about this ghost story.... But at least thank your friend who had to carry you on his back.

He remembers being laughed at as he carried Hideki down the street.

CHII: Hideki.

HIDEKI: Sorry, Shinbo, but the fainting had nothing to do with the ghost story....

SHINBO: Well, think about it for a minute. This building doesn't even have a room 104. The first floor only has three rooms. Listen, left from the entrance is kanrinin-san's room, 101. Then off to the right are two other rooms. That's it, so where would room 104 be? If you get it, you can just forget about that story. Later.

He leaves. Chii holds up the washcloth, which has fallen off Hideki's face.

CHII: Hideki, does it still hurt?

HIDEKI: No, it doesn't hurt anymore.

CHII: Hideki, are you scared of that room?

HIDEKI: Uh, well....

CHII: Chii will find out!

She stands up.

HIDEKI: Uh, Chii!

He remembers Shinbo's words.

SHINBO, in past: This building doesn't even have a room 104.

HIDEKI: Chii, I'll go with you!

*** Hallway ***

Hideki and Chii are downstairs. Thunder rumbles outside.

HIDEKI: That's right. That story can't be true if there isn't a room 104. There are three rooms on the first floor. First, Hibiya-san's room, 101. And the two that are left are 102 and 103.

He tries the knob of the room he'd seen the light from. It won't turn.

HIDEKI: So it was just an ordinary empty room.... That's all it was. I'm such an idiot.

He touches the blank nameplate on the door, and it slides a little. He pulls it out. The lights in the hallway flicker out.

HIDEKI: A power failure? That lightning is pretty close....

As he says it, a flash behind him lights up the other side of the nameplate. It says 104.

EYECATCH

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki sits at his desk.

HIDEKI: Chii?

He pokes his head out into the hallway.

HIDEKI: Hey, Chii!

He doesn't see her.

HIDEKI: Could it be..?!

*** Hallway ***

Hideki runs down the stairs. He sees Chii standing in front of room 104.

HIDEKI: Chii! Chii, what are you doing? It's dangerous there!

Suddenly, another Chii appears behind him and pushes him into the room. He falls backward onto the floor, and sees the woman standing over him with a gleaming knife.

HIDEKI: Agggh!

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki sits up in bed.

HIDEKI: Huh?

Chii is sleeping safely beside him.

HIDEKI: It was just a dream.... I'm so glad....

There is a knock at the door.

SHINBO'S VOICE: Hey, Motosuwa!

Shinbo opens the door.

SHINBO: It's almost noon. How long are you going to sleep?

SUMOMO: Let's go study hard at cram school today!

HIDEKI: What?! It's already time?!

SHINBO: I'm leaving now.

SUMOMO: Get up!

As Hideki struggles to get dressed, Chii opens her eyes.

CHII: Chii?

HIDEKI: Oh, sorry for waking you up, Chii. I gotta go now!

CHII: Hideki, where are you going?

HIDEKI: "Where"? Cram school.

CHII: That's....

The door of the apartment has a nameplate that says 104.

DISTORTED VOICE: Room 104.

The door opens and the woman is standing on the other side.

HIDEKI: Agggh!!!!

*** Park ***

Hideki is sitting on a wooden bench. Yumi holds out some ice cream.

YUMI: Here you go. Is vanilla okay?

HIDEKI: Huh? This is...?

YUMI: Oh, geez. Senpai said he wanted to go somewhere together.

HIDEKI: Is.... Is that so...?

YUMI: I'm so glad the weather is nice!

HIDEKI: Y.... Yeah.

Yumi looks over at a boat rental place.

YUMI: Ah, I want to ride in that boat!

Hideki rows her out onto the lake.

HIDEKI: This is really nice.

YUMI: Isn't it? I just love it!

HIDEKI: The sunlight shining through the trees is beautiful. It reminds me of where I grew up.

YUMI: There's an even more beautiful place up ahead. It's an old apartment.

Hideki looks behind him, and sees the room with the flickering light coming closer.

*** Tokyo ***

SHIMIZU: Motosuwa-kun!

She grabs his shoulders and keep him from walking out in front of a train.

SHIMIZU: Don't doze off like that! It's dangerous!

HIDEKI: Shimizu-sensei, sumimasehn.

SHIMIZU: You've been acting so strange lately. Did something happen?

HIDEKI: Huh? Iee, not really.

SHIMIZU: I see. I guess not. It's not something you'd talk to me about. I'm just a simple cram-school teacher, after all. Hey, want to go get a drink? Hey, come on, let's go!

She takes his hand.

SHIMIZU: There's something I've wanted to talk to Motosuwa-kun about.

HIDEKI: Sensei, is this okay? Going together like this is, well....

SHIMIZU: It's okay, it's okay! There's a good store nearby! See? Here it is!

They're in front of room 104.

SHIMIZU, in eerie voice: I just had to bring you here.

HIDEKI: S.... Sensei....

Shimizu opens the door to reveal the woman, and starts to go inside.

HIDEKI: Sensei, don't!!!!

*** Classroom ***

Shimizu throws something at Hideki's head and knocks him off his chair.

SHIMIZU: "Don't" what?!

HIDEKI: A dream...?

SHINBO: What are you doing?

SHIMIZU, amused: Those were some interesting things you said while you were sleeping. Go wash your face.

HIDEKI: Yeah. Sumimasehn.

He staggers off, and starts to climb out the window.

SHINBO: Hey, this is the third floor!!!!

Note: This is the end of the dream.

*** Shinbo's Apartment ***

SHINBO: Here.

He hands Hideki a cup of coffee.

HIDEKI: Sorry.... I still can't stop thinking about it.

SHINBO: It seems like it.

HIDEKI: I can't get room 104 out of my mind whether I'm awake or asleep. Please, Shinbo, sleep with me!

SHINBO: You're seriously ill. Motosuwa, let's go find that curse.

*** Minoru's House ***

MINORU: And? Why did you come to my house? You think Motosuwa-san's fear of ghosts is my fault?

SHINBO: Iee, that's not it. If we can find out where that story came from.... I figured he'd worry about it less.

MINORU: Where it came from? Well, a ghost story on the Internet is definitely fake, anyway.

SHINBO: I know that, but....

HIDEKI, muttering: Room 104.... Why did it have to be room 104....

MINORU: Hey, listen, Motosuwa-san. There are a lot of mysteries and riddles that exist in this world. But they're mostly misunderstandings. They're usually just natural phenomena.

HIDEKI: B.... But I really heard it. The sound of something crawling around on the floor. And also blood flowing across the floor! I saw it with my own eyes!

MINORU: What you saw could have been totally different. When a person is unfamiliar with his surroundings.... He'll believe things that aren't really there are there. That's why....

HIDEKI, whimpering: But I really saw it.... I really saw room 104, which supposedly doesn't exist!

MINORU: Uhhh, Motosuwa-san....

HIDEKI: That story was really about Gabu Jougasaki!!!! Hee!!!! Agggh!!!!

MINORU: Then let's all go. To Gabu Jougasaki.

*** Street ***

Hideki, Shinbo (with Sumomo), Minoru, and Yuzuki are standing on the street in front of Gabu Jougasaki.

SHINBO: It's pretty dark when you look at it from here.

HIDEKI: Who cares about that?!

Chii sees them from Hideki's window, and runs to join them.

HIDEKI: Why does the weather have to be so creepy like this?

MINORU: It's perfect for investigating this phenomenon.

Chii comes outside.

CHII: Hideki!

HIDEKI: Chii!

CHII: Okaerinasai.

She hugs him.

HIDEKI: Chii, you're okay!! I'm so glad!!

SHINBO: Of course she's okay.

MINORU: Well? Where's this room?

SHINBO: Oh. The room to the left of the entrance is kanrinin-san's room, 101. Then off to the right are two empty rooms. And the room Motosuwa saw the lights in is the one on the end.

YUZUKI: Excuse me, but at that time, Motosuwa-sama was...?

HIDEKI: I was alone.

MINORU: Shinbo-san, have you seen it yourself?

SHINBO: Iee.

SUMOMO: Sumomo hasn't seen it either!

MINORU: Then the possibility of this all being a misunderstanding is....

The light in the room flashes.

HIDEKI: I knew it!

Minoru shushes him. Hideki shudders.

CHII: Hideki, are you afraid of that?

She touches his face.

CHII: Are you scared now?

SHINBO: I'm going to go check it out. [to Minoru] Make sure he doesn't run away.

HIDEKI: Shinbo!

*** Gabu Jougasaki ***

Shinbo enters.

SHINBO: Geez, someone has very poor taste in pranks. And when I find the culprit, I'll....

He turns around to see a woman in the shadows.

*** Outside ***

YUZUKI: Shinbo-sama is pretty late.

HIDEKI: Could it be?

MINORU: Let's go.

*** Gabu Jougasaki ***

They enter.

HIDEKI: Shinbo....

MINORU: Let's go check upstairs.

YUZUKI: Hai.

She and Minoru go up the stairs.

HIDEKI: Hey, w...!

Chii looks at the door.

HIDEKI: Chii....

CHII: It's there.

HIDEKI: "It's there"?

Chii walks down the hallway.

HIDEKI: Chi-

He tries to follow her.

HIDEKI, thinking: My body won't move.... Chii, don't go down there! Move, move! What am I doing?! Chii! Chii!

The door handle starts to turn. Hideki gasps. As the door opens, he takes off down the hallway.

HIDEKI: Chii!

He tackles her away from the door. It's Hibiya on the other side.

HIBIYA: Eh?

Minoru and Yuzuki come down the stairs.

*** Apartment 104 ***

HIDEKI: The storage room?

HIBIYA: Yeah. This room was getting moldy and damp, so I decided I'd clean it up. But the lightbulb burned out so I couldn't do much work. I tried using lots of different footstools to change the bulbs.... But no matter what I used I couldn't reach it.

Note: Hibiya's not particularly short, but she's smaller than the average male.

SHINBO: So I replaced it when I came in.

SUMOMO: And everything comes to a close!

HIDEKI: But there was some sort of liquid coming from under the door...!

HIBIYA: Yeah, I knocked over a bucket when I was trying to move a table. I was going to ask you to help me when I came to your room that time. But you looked busy, so....

Hideki slumps to the floor.

HIDEKI: Lightbulb, table, bucket. Oh, but it said room 104!

MINORU: It turns out that the first floor originally had four rooms.

Yuzuki holds up the nameplate from the next room.

YUZUKI: The room next door is room 103.

HIBIYA: I did some remodeling when I first moved in here.

SUMOMO: The first room is 102.

Hideki falls over.

CHII: Hideki. Are you okay?

HIDEKI: Oh, I wonder why I was so scared.... I'm so pitiful.

CHII: Hideki, are you not scared anymore?

HIDEKI: No, I'm not scared at all!

Chii smiles cutely.

CHII: I'm glad.

Hideki blushes.

HIDEKI: Chii....

SHINBO: What kind of mood is this guy trying to set?

HIDEKI: I'm not trying to set anything!!!! But I'm glad. I can't believe I was scared in the first place. The scariest part was when I thought Chii was going to get hurt.

YUZUKI: Is something wrong, Minoru-sama?

MINORU: Iee, everything's okay. Since nothing happened.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

It's morning, and the sky is clear. Hideki sits up in bed.

HIDEKI: The clear sky is so great. Huh? Chii? Where did she...?

He looks up to see her hanging from the light fixture again.

CHII: Hideki! Ohayo!

She drops down on top of him affectionately, knocking him out.

CHII: Hideki still wants to sleep? Oyasuminasai.

She covers him with his blanket. Her eyes flash.

CHII: I can hear it again.

The whirring sound seems to be coming from one of the empty rooms downstairs.
