Chobits Episode 11 - Chii Meets

OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Let Me Be With You"

*** Yorokonde Tavern ***

HIDEKI: Huh? A movie?

YUMI: Hai. I was planning on going with a friend of mine, and I was so excited about it that I reserved seats. But then she couldn't make it all of a sudden.

HIDEKI: So you want.... The two of us to go together?

She holds up the tickets.

YUMI: Hai!

Hideki blushes.

YUMI: But even if you don't have class, you probably have to study, right?

HIDEKI: Iee, not at all! I don't have to worry about that. But I'm wondering if it's okay, going "together" and all.

YUMI: So you can't?

HIDEKI: Uh, well, if you're okay with me going....

YUMI: Really? All right! Here.

She puts a ticket for a movie called "Be Happy" in his hand.

YUMI: Then I'll meet you tomorrow at 11 o'clock in front of the theater.

HIDEKI: Uh, okay.

He stares at the ticket.

HIDEKI, thinking: Could this be...? [happily] A date?! Is this what they call a date?! [aloud] But.... Wait....

TITLE SCREEN

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii is reading her book. In it, the character walks along through the city. It's nighttime.

CHII, reading: "As expected, there isn't anybody in this city, either."

The character looks up at the buildings. Every window has the silhouettes of pairs of people.

CHII, reading: "Everyone was with 'that.' They won't awaken from the fun dream with 'that.' But the time they spend with 'that' is a dream. A dreamy, wonderful time. 'That' can make any dream come true. They make people happy by doing what they want. Because 'that' isn't a person, which is why 'that' can become the person's dream. But there is something 'that' can't do. 'That' can never become human. It can be a replacement for one, but can never be one. That is something I know well. I know it well because I am me."

Hideki enters.

HIDEKI: Tadaima!

CHII: Okaerinasai.

HIDEKI: Gomen, I need to do something with Shinbo. I'll be back in a little while.

He puts his backpack on the floor, then leaves. Chii hears him in the hallway.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: Shinbo, are you there? Shinbo?

*** Shinbo's Apartment ***

SHINBO: Eh? Advice on a date?

HIDEKI: Yeah. There's a lot written about it in magazines. Like how to behave, what to wear, the things not to do....

SHINBO: Let's see, the first piece of advice I can give you is....

Hideki gets ready to write on a pad of paper.

HIDEKI: Is...?

SHINBO: Comb that messy hair of yours. Your apearance is very important.

HIDEKI: "Comb hair."

SHINBO: Then your greeting. When you meet her, compliment her clothes. In fact, over-compliment them.

HIDEKI: "Compliment her clothes."

SHINBO: Then you.... Take out a rose and put it between your teeth. Then do the tango followed by a one-handed handstand.

HIDEKI: "Tango, then handstand." Then what?

Shinbo laughs.

SHINBO: I'm just joking.

HIDEKI: Eh?

SHINBO: You've never been on a date with a girl, have you?

Hideki blushes.

SHINBO: So you're a virgin?

HIDEKI: Is that a bad thing?

SHINBO: I suppose that's why you're so confused. But I really think there's just one good piece of advice for dating.

HIDEKI: What's that?

SHINBO: Be yourself the entire time.

HIDEKI: Huh?

Shinbo pats Sumomo's head.

SHINBO: Humans can't install programs when they want to change their personality the way persocons can. We only change by learning. Besides, if you go on a date without being yourself, it's rude.

HIDEKI: I guess that's true, but....

SHINBO: All right. If you understand, then awaken the virgin in you and go get her!

HIDEKI: Yeah. And quit saying "virgin"!!!!

*** Hallway ***

Hideki leaves Shinbo's apartment.

HIDEKI: Be myself? I suppose I should at least comb my hair.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki combs his hair in the mirror.

HIDEKI: Is this good?

He shows his teeth. Chii copies him.

HIDEKI: All right, nothing left between my teeth after brushing.

He checks his breath. Chii copies him.

HIDEKI: All right, everything is fine.

He looks at several items he has laid out on the table.

HIDEKI: Handerkerchief, wallet, tissue, pocket map, date guide, antacid. All right, now I'm ready. I hope I didn't forget anything.

He puts the items in his backpack.

CHII: Hideki, you forgot something.

She holds out a magazine.

CHII: Hideki, you forgot your model.

HIDEKI: Uh, no, I don't need my model, Chii.

CHII: Chii?

Hideki stands up and smiles.

HIDEKI: I'm going to be with Yumi-chan for the rest of the day.

He checks his watch.

HIDEKI: It's still a little early but I don't want to be late.

He puts on his shoes.

CHII: Hideki seems happy.

HIDEKI: Oh? Do I really look happy?

CHII: Is something good happening at your school?

HIDEKI: No, I'm not going to cram school today. I'm going to go have fun. With a girl I work with.

CHII: "Fun"?

HIDEKI: Well, it'll just be the two of us.... I suppose it's more like a date.

CHII: "Date"? Chii doesn't understand.

HIDEKI: Oh, that's right. It's when two companions who love each other get together.

CHII: "Love"?

HIDEKI: It means liking someone. Well, I'll be going.

He goes to the door.

CHII: Hideki, you like that girl?

HIDEKI: Eh? Yeah. Well, it's more like she's a really nice person. Well, itte kimasu.

He leaves.

CHII: Itte rashai.

*** Street ***

Hibiya is sweeping. Hideki comes outside.

HIBIYA: Oh, you're alone today?

HIDEKI: Yeah, I have plans.

HIBIYA: So Chii-chan is by herself?

HIDEKI: Hai. Is that strange?

HIBIYA: Nope.

HIDEKI: Itte kimasu.

HIBIYA: Itte rashai!

Hideki runs off, and Hibiya smiles.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii reads her book.

CHII, reading: "Today I search for the person just for me again. A person who will like me for who I am. A person who will like me even if I can't make his dreams come true. But...."

The character stares into a mirror. Its reflection wears a darker pink color.

CHARACTER: Does a person like that really exist? It would be nice if that person exists.

DARK CHARACTER: Will that person really like me and only me?

The sentence "It would be nice if it were true," appears.

DARK CHARACTER: Will that person really ask nothing of me?

The phrase "If not..." appears.

CHARACTER: If that person can't like me for who I am, then that person isn't for me.

DARK CHARACTER: Really?

CHARACTER: Really.

DARK CHARACTER: Does that person really exist?

CHARACTER: Really.

DARK CHARACTER: Then where?

CHARACTER: Probably very close. I'm sure the person I can like is in a place not too far away....

Chii stops reading.

CHII, quietly: Chii?

*** Theater ***

Hideki stands outside the movie theater.

HIDEKI: This is the place, right?

YUMI: Senpaiiiii!

SHe runs up.

YUMI: Sorry for being late.

HIDEKI: No, I was early. Yumi was on time. See?

He points to the clock. It's exactly 11 o'clock.

YUMI: Oh, you're right.

She looks at her wristwatch.

YUMI: My watch must be fast. I was so worried!

HIDEKI: I guess that's why you were hurrying.

YUMI: That's right. But I'm glad I didn't make you wait too long.

She smiles cutely.

HIDEKI, thinking: Who would have thought my first date would be this kawaii? I'm on top of the world!!!!

The screen behind him says "TOP OF THE WORLD."

YUMI: By the way, senpai, your hair looks different from usual.

HIDEKI: Does it look weird?

YUMI: Iee, it look more adult and it suits you well. But I think I prefer the usual senpai.

Note: Me, too. He looks like a weirdo with his hair like this.

HIDEKI: R.... Really?

He messes up his hair.

YUMI: You didn't have to put it back!

HIDEKI: It's okay, it's okay, I prefer the normal way, too.

Hideki and Yumi are watching the movie. On the screen, a man and woman are kissing in a snowy street. Hideki looks over at Yumi and gulps. He imagines himself and Yumi as the characters in the movie.

*** Fantasy ***

Hideki is wearing a black trenchcoat, and Yumi is wearing a pink dress.

YUMI: May I go with you? I don't want to go back home today.

Hideki kisses her.

*** Reality ***

HIDEKI: What should I do if something like that happens? Maybe I should say "Your father will get worried," and send her home. But wait, if the girl was begging you.... In a situation like that.... Oh, I don't know!

He realizes he's been talking aloud and covers his mouth.

YUMI: Senpai, is something wrong?

HIDEKI: Nothing.

He laughs nervously and eats a piece of popcorn.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii continues reading.

DARK CHARACTER: If that person doesn't like me, what should I do? What should I do if someone who's not for me likes me? People's hearts can't be erased or added to like "that." That's why changing people's decisions is difficult.

CHARACTER: I already know that. People's hearts are easy to change, but there are some things you can't change. For example, the emotion of liking someone can't be changed easily.

DARK CHARACTER: Then what should I do?

CHARACTER: Then I will have to choose. I will have to choose and face the consquences.

CHII, reading: "With me and my other self...."

Chii stops reading. She can hear a faint buzzing. She stares at the window, then walks over to it. Chii opens the window and raises her hands to her ears.

CHII: I can hear it again. It's calling for Chii.

She jumps out the window.

EYECATCH

*** Tokyo ***

Chii is standing on top of a telephone pole.

CHII: Who?

VOICE: It's me. Close your eyes. I'll send you an image.

Chii obeys. What resembles a doorway appears in front of her. In the doorway is Dark Chii.

CHII: Chii? You're the one who's been calling for me?

DARK CHII: Yes, I was the one who called for you.

CHII: Why do you have my face?

Dark Chii reaches out toward her.

DARK CHII: Because I am you.

She takes Chii's hand, and intertwines their fingers.

CHII: Chii doesn't understand.

DARK CHII: Your data disappeared, didn't it? Tell me, who are you with right now?

CHII: Hideki. Hideki picked up Chii.

DARK CHII: "Chii"? Is that your name now?

CHII: Chii's name is "Chii." Hideki gave it to Chii.

DARK CHII: Is Hideki the one just for me?

CHII: "The one just for me"?

DARK CHII: The person who will like me.

CHII: Chii doesn't know. Chii only knows what Hideki taught her after Chii awakened.

Dark Chii puts her arms around Chii.

DARK CHII: I see. So you're really forgotten everything. But I remember. The things about us. The things we decided. Chii, we have come together again. The things you will see, do, and know.... They will all be transferred to me. We are always together.

She kisses Chii.

DARK CHII: I'll see you again, Chii.

She disappears, and Chii is back on top of the telephone pole. The wind blows.

*** Park ***

Hideki and Yumi are sitting on the grass, near the lake, which is full or rowboats. Hideki eats a sandwich.

HIDEKI: It's good! It's really delicious!

Yumi pours coffee.

YUMI: I put a lot of effort into making it, since it was for senpai. Here, it's coffee.

HIDEKI: Arigatou. [thinking] But who would've thought I'd be going to the movies with Yumi-chan...? And then eating together in the park? I'm so happy.

He watches a woman running toward a man and a persocon. The woman grabs the man's hand.

WOMAN: Gomen! Sorry I'm late.

MAN: It's okay. [to persocon] Well, I'm counting on you to buy the groceries. Go home when you're done.

PERSOCON: Hai, I understand.

WOMAN: So, what do you want to eat? I'm hungry.

MAN: Hmmm, ramen.

WOMAN: Eh?! Again?

The persocon walks away.

YUMI: Are you worried?

HIDEKI: Eh?

YUMI: You call her Chii-chan, don't you? Your persocon.

HIDEKI: Oh, yeah. She can't do anything normal persocons do, though.

YUMI: But she's kawaii, isn't she?

HIDEKI: Y.... Yeah, that's true.

YUMI: I'm a little jealous.

HIDEKI: Huh?

YUMI: All persocons are so kawaii. Are you going to end up liking your persocon more than anything else, too?

HIDEKI: "More than anything else"? She's only a persocon, even if she's really kawaii. But....

YUMI: "But"?

HIDEKI: They're not human.

YUMI: Really?

HIDEKI: Yeah.

YUMI: Sorry for talking about such weird stuff. Wanna go on a boat ride? I'll pay for it.

HIDEKI: You don't have to, I can pay for it.

YUMI: But....

HIDEKI: You brought lunch for me, so at least let me pay for the ride. Okay?

YUMI, happily: Hai!

Hideki rows out onto the lake.

YUMI: Senpai, is it hard to row?

HIDEKI: Not at all. It's really easy. Huh?

YUMI: What is it?

HIDEKI: It's Minoru-kun.

Minoru and Yuzuki are in a boat nearby.

HIDEKI: Heeeey! Hey!

Minoru doesn't look.

HIDEKI: I guess he can't hear me.

He stands up to yell. The boat rocks.

HIDEKI: Hey!

YUMI: Senpai, it's dangerous to stand up!

HIDEKI: Hey! Agggh!

He loses his balance and falls out of the boat into the shallow water.

YUMI: Senpai!

Hideki looks embarrassed. Minoru notices them.

*** Later ***

Hideki is sitting on a park bench, his shoes off and his pants rolled up.

HIDEKI: So cold....

YUMI: Senpai, are you okay?

HIDEKI: I'm fine, I'm fine.

YUMI: But you look like you're cold. I know! I'll go buy some socks and sandals!

She runs off.

HIDEKI: Oh, you don't have to...! Yumi-chan!

YUZUKI: I'll go to the convenience store with her.

MINORU: Oh, okay.

YUZUKI: Hai.

She leaves.

MINORU: She's a human, isn't she?

HIDEKI: Yumi-chan? Of course.

MINORU: I'm glad.

HIDEKI: Huh?

MINORU: Since your persocon is kawaii, I thought you'd become too attached to her and forget about humans.

HIDEKI: Even you say that same thing....

MINORU: "Same"?

HIDEKI: Yumi-chan said the same thing. She asked if I would end up liking persocons more than anything else.

MINORU: And how did you answer that?

HIDEKI: I said that persocons aren't human.

MINORU: That's true. I know that.... That persocons aren't human.

HIDEKI: Are you talking about Yuzuki-san?

MINORU: Huh?

HIDEKI: Iee. You don't have to tell me if you'd rather not talk about it. But I noticed that you act differently around her, so....

MINORU: Motosuwa-san, I bet a lot of people tell you you're a nice guy.

HIDEKI: Huh? Well, I suppose so.

MINORU: But even if you're a nice guy, you and that girl probably won't work out.

HIDEKI: Forget about that!

MINORU: Yuzuki is.... A copy of nee-san who died two years ago from an illness. I recreated her looks and personality as closely as I could. The habits I remember she had, the things she hated, the things she liked.... And all nee-san's memories I could possibly put into her.

At the convenience store, Yuzuki and Yumi buy the socks and sandals. Yumi looks at a fridge full of drinks.

MINORU: That's why Yuzuki is exactly like nee-san. She exactly the same.

HIDEKI: Minoru-kun....

MINORU: But no matter how identical she is, there is something I can never program. As the one who built her, I know it best. But there are times when I want to forget about it. The fact that Yuzuki is a persocon.

HIDEKI: Then the reason you warned me when we first met not to fall in love with a persocon is....

MINORU: Yeah. It's advice for the present day. Was I being too nosy?

HIDEKI: I... Iee. Not at all.

MINORU: Then it's okay.

HIDEKI: Gomen, I don't really have much to say after hearing all that....

MINORU: You're really a nice guy, Motosuwa-san.

He puts his hand on Hideki's shoulder.

MINORU: Motosuwa-san, it'd be nice if you lost your virginity soon.

HIDEKI: Yeah. Eh? How did Minoru-kun know about that?!

MINORU: Shinbo-san e-mailed me about it yesterday.

HIDEKI: Why that...!

He flails his arms. Yumi and Yuzuki walk toward them.

YUZUKI: They seem to be having fun.

YUMI: Yep. It must be great for you, Yuzuki-san.

YUZUKI: Eh?

YUMI: Senpai!!!!

She runs up to Hideki, who is still ranting.

*** Later ***

HIDEKI: See you later.

Minoru waves, and he and Yuzuki walk away.

YUMI: She's pretty, isn't she?

Hideki stares at Yuzuki with a serious expression.

YUMI: Senpai?

HIDEKI, thinking: "There are times when I want to forget...."

He looks around. Yumi is gone.

HIDEKI: Yumi-chan?

There is a can of coffee sitting on the wall near him.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki enters.

HIDEKI: Tadaima!

Chii glomps him.

CHII: Okaerinasai!

He falls to the floor.

HIDEKI: Ouch. Chii...?

CHII: Hideki, okaerini!

HIDEKI: Tadaima, Chii....

CLOSING THEME MUSIC: "Raison d'�tre"
