Chobits Episode 08 - Chii is Perplexed

OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Let Me Be With You"

*** Street ***

SUMOMO: Three hundred meters until you arrive at the building!

He sees the sign for the Kawaii Kitty Nyan Nyan.

HIDEKI: Is that it?!

He stumbles on some garbage cans. There is a blinding flash of light from a window above, which Hideki sees from the street.

HIDEKI: W.... What's that? Chii!

He runs up several flights of stairs toward the light. Upstairs, the man is lying on the floor. The wall has been blown open, and the wind blows.

*** Somewhere ***

Chii's foot comes to rest delicately on a roof. She leaps away, eyes closed.

*** Kawaii Kitty Nyan Nyan ***

Hideki shakes the man who accosted Chii.

HIDEKI: Chii, where is Chii?!

The man doesn't respond. He seems catatonic.

HIDEKI: Where could she have gone?

TITLE SCREEN

*** Street ***

Chii is standing on top of a tall clock. (Shaped like a lamppost, only instead of a light, there's a clock. ^^) The people on the street stop to stare at Chii. Hideki runs.

HIDEKI: Chii?

He and Sumomo look around.

HIDEKI: Where'd you go, Chii?! Answer me!

SUMOMO: Where did she go?

At the scene, Chii opens her eyes. All the persocons that walk by stop to stare at her. Their eyes flash, then stop.

*** Minoru's House ***

Minoru is replaying the footage of the man touching Chii and her subsequent glowing.

MINORU: Something happened right after this. Yuzuki, replay it at one-fourth the original speed.

She obeys, but the footage blanks out. Yuzuki's eyes stop flashing. Minoru gasps.

MINORU: Yuzuki! Yuzuki!

*** Street ***

Hideki is running.

HIDEKI: Damn, where is she?!

He stops and pants.

HIDEKI: Hey, Sumomo, can you call Minoru-kun once more?

Sumomo is limp in his pocket.

HIDEKI: Hey, what's wrong, Sumomo? Are you okay, Sumomo? Sumomo! You aren't broken, are you? Hey! Damn, you're worth a lot, too.... This is bad....

He pokes her.

VOICE, on PA system: This is the North Plaza Police Office.

Hideki sees a policeman making the announcement from the station nearby.

POLICEMAN, on PA system: People with persocons in the main plaza, please move them somewhere else. I repeat, this is the North Plaza Police Office. People with persocons in the main plaza, please move them somewhere else.

People are trying to move their persocons, but they seem to be rooted to the spot.

POLICEMAN, on PA system: They are blocking all the streets. Please move them somewhere else. [off PA system] By the way, are ours working yet?

POLICEMAN 2: Not at all. I can't find the problem.

POLICEMAN: I guess it can't be helped....

A third policeman is trying to fix a small persocon that looks like a children's toy or a pokemon or something.

POLICEMAN 3: The one over here doesn't work either. It won't even restart.

POLICEMAN: I wonder what happened....

Hideki wanders through the crowd.

HIDEKI: What is all this? Did something happen?

The policeman talks to a man who is trying to move his persocon.

POLICEMAN: It doesn't work at all?

MAN: No.

POLICEMAN: Do you know why this is happening?

MAN: Well, it looked up at that persocon on the clock....

HIDEKI: "Clock"? "Persocon"?

He looks over at the clock. Chii is gone.

POLICEMAN: I don't see anything there now.

MAN: Yeah....

HIDEKI: Chii, where are you? Where did you go? Chii?!

Somewhere, Chii continues leaping across buildings while Hideki walks through the crowd. He glances up and sees Chii leap across the street above him.

HIDEKI: Chii!

He runs after her.

HIDEKI: Chii! Chii! Chii, can't you hear me?!

Chii stops leaping and stands on a streetlight. She closes her eyes and starts to fall forward into the water below.

HIDEKI: Chii!!!!

She opens her eyes.

CHII: Hideki.

She continues to fall. Hideki jumps up and catches her. The persocons return to normal.

PERSOCON 1: Ummm, did something happen?

MAN: Of course something happened!

WOMAN: I was so scared!

PERSOCON 2: About what?

Sumomo wakes up and blows her whistle.

SUMOMO: Chii-san located! Chii-san located!

HIDEKI: Sumomo?

*** Later ***

It's 1:10 in the morning. Hideki carries Chii down the street. (Awww, he put his jacket on her. What is he, stupid?) He hides from a passing police car.

HIDEKI: Chii.

She doesn't respond.

HIDEKI: Anyway, I need to get you back home.

He opens his wallet.

HIDEKI: One, two, three.... Oh, well. I can't do it by myself.

He raises his hand to hail a cab.

*** Taxi ***

DRIVER: Hey, mister, is that a persocon?

HIDEKI: Hai.

DRIVER: It must have frozen a while back. Persocons are convenient, but it probably cost you a lot.

HIDEKI: Yeah, kinda. But Chii is my precious persocon.

He looks at Chii "sleeping" in the seat next to him.

HIDEKI: So that's why....

He falls asleep.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki sits up in bed.

HIDEKI: I feel like.... I've just had a dream about an action movie.

He looks at Chii in the bed next to him.

HIDEKI, thinking: But yesterday really surprised me. She's still sleeping well after last night. B.... But wait.... She looks like she's sleeping well, but she's not really sleeping, is she? She hasn't even opened her eyes since yesterday. She's not moving. That's bad, isn't it?

He puts his hand on her head.

HIDEKI: Chii? [thinking] What do I do if she doesn't move? Chii. Chii!

He shakes her.

HIDEKI, thinking: If she stayed like this forever.... [aloud] Chii!!!!

He lifts her up and shakes her.

HIDEKI: Wake up, Chii!!!! Hey, Chii!

She slowly opens her eyes.

CHII: Chiiiiiii? Hideki?

She glomps him.

CHII: Chii! Hideki! Hideki! Hideki!

HIDEKI: Hey....

CHII: Chii?

He grins, and Chii hugs him happily.

CHII: Chii.

HIDEKI: I'm so glad.

*** Minoru's House ***

Yuzuki's eyes flash.

YUZUKI: Minoru-sama, would you like another cup of tea?

MINORU: Yes, please.

She refills his cup. He sits back and sighs.

YUZUKI: I wonder if Chii-san was all right.

MINORU: I got an e-mail from Shinbo-san.

He takes a sip of tea.

MINORU: They found her and managed to get her home.

YUZUKI: I see. I'm glad.

MINORU: What I don't understand is why all the persocons in the area froze. Yuzuki, you don't understand either, do you? That time....

YUZUKI: Hai, but....

MINORU: "But"?

YUZUKI: I think I heard.... A voice.

MINORU: Whose?

YUZUKI: I don't know. But.... Yes, it was a familiar voice. A person I know. It was....

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

CHII: Part-time job.

HIDEKI: Eh? Say that again?

CHII: Chii went to a part-time job yesterday.

HIDEKI: I told you not to! No dangerous jobs!

CHII: Yes, Hideki said no. That's why Chii didn't do a dangerous job.

HIDEKI: A peep house is extremely dangerous!

CHII: Chii? Onii-san said it was a good job.

HIDEKI: Strangers always say things like that!

CHII: Hideki said he'd be happy if Chii works.

HIDEKI: Eh?

CHII: Hideki said he wanted to buy lots of things with money.

Hideki sighs.

HIDEKI: I suppose I did. I shouldn't have said that. Huh?

Chii has moved closer to him.

CHII: Chii was wrong? Chii was bad?

She grabs his shirt pleadingly.

HIDEKI: No, Chii's not bad, not bad at all. You're not bad.

CHII: Really?

HIDEKI: Yeah.

Chii still looks sad.

HIDEKI: Chii....

He stands up.

HIDEKI: Chii isn't bad!

CHII: Chii doesn't want to be hated by Hideki. Because Hideki is Chii's....

HIDEKI: I'm happy you feel that way, but.... You don't need to overdo it by working.

CHII: Why? Hideki said he would be happy.

HIDEKI: Hmmmm, all right, let's do this. I'll find a job for you. So stay home until then, okay?

CHII: Yeah! Arigatou, Hideki! Chii is happy.

Hideki grins, then shakes his head.

HIDEKI: Iee, I'm the one who needs to thank you. Thanks for understanding, Chii.

He pats her head.

CHII: Chii.

*** Classroom ***

SHIMIZU: You need to be careful with simple sentences.

HIDEKI, to himself: So a simple sentence is bad, it needs more description. So what Chii needs is a job that doesn't require any common sense. Ohhhh, does a job like that really exist?

*** Yorokonde Tavern ***

Yumi is wiping off a table.

YUMI: Please don't worry about yesterday.

HIDEKI: Okay, but I really wanted to eat your homemade cooking.

YUMI: I'm glad your persocon is safe.

HIDEKI: Yeah, but she doesn't seem satisfied. If she doesn't get a job, she might try something like this again. So I need to find one for her.

YUMI: I see. That's pretty tough.

HIDEKI: Well, not really. I found a good job really easily.

He puts a flyer on the table in front of Yumi.

HIDEKI: A place for her to work. See, in this shopping district, there's a sweets shop called Chiroru. They're having a fair for something or other over there.

YUMI: Five years....

HIDEKI: Eh?

YUMI: It's their fifth-year anniversary. It says so on this flyer.

HIDEKI: Ah, so that's it. Well, if I speak to the manager, he might give Chii a job. I'm really glad I found a place for her to work.

Yumi stares at the flyer.

YUMI: Yeah, I suppose so.

TENCHOU: All right, let's open up!

HIDEKI: Yorokonde! Come on, Yumi-chan!

*** Outside Chiroru ***

CHII: Welcome! Chiroru is now open for its fifth-year anniversary fair. We are giving away free sweets.

She is standing in front of the shop's entrance, wearing a very cute outfit and holding a basket of wrapped packages.

CHII: Welcome! Chiroru is now open for its fifth-year anniversary fair. We are giving away free sweets.

WOMAN: That girl is so kawaii!

MAN: Oh, yeah, that's a very well-made persocon.

WOMAN: It's a persocon?

MAN: You can tell 'cause of the ears.

WOMAN: Well, it's still kawaii.

*** Indside Chiroru ***

A man is speaking to the manager.

MAN: It's a persocon?

TENCHOU: Yep.

MAN: Ehhh, she's kawaii, isn't she?

*** Classroom ***

Hideki glares at no one.

SHIMIZU: This sentence is a phrase taken from the Ise Monogatari. And that sentence is taken from the Taketori Monogatari. After that is Tetoukende.

Note: Fansubber informs me that the Ise Monogatari is an anthology of stories collected in 950 AD. The Taketori Monogatari is a folktale about a bamboo cutter who find the princess of the moon while cutting down bamboo trees.

HIDEKI, thinking: I hope she's doing well, and isn't causing any problems....

*** Chiroru ***

TENCHOU: Chii-chan! Good work!

CHII: Chii?

TENCHOU: We're closing, so you're finished for the day.

CHII: "Finished"?

TENCHOU: Yep, that means that we're all done for today.

CHII: Chii didn't work before today. Chii hasn't done anything wrong, right?

TENCHOU: You didn't do anything wrong. You've worked really hard and been a big help.

CHII: Will Chii get money?

TENCHOU: Of course! Here's your pay for today.

He hands her an envelope. She inspects it.

CHII: This is money?

The tenchou laughs.

TENCHOU: That's an envelope. The money is inside.

CHII: Can I buy something with this?

TENCHOU: Sure you can.

CHII: Hideki wants to buy things with this. Chii doesn't understand many things. That's why I want to learn. Ueda Hiroyasu-tenchou, please teach me a lot of things!

She bows.

UEDA: You don't have to call me by my full name. Just call me tenchou.

CHII: Tenchou!

UEDA: Hai.

Chii points at him.

CHII: Tenchou! I'm going to call this person tenchou!

UEDA: Heh heh. Chii-chan, just like Motosuwa-kun told me, you don't have much common sense....

CHII: Chii?

UEDA: But I'm glad you're a good girl.

CHII: Chii is a good girl?

UEDA: A very good girl, just like Motosuwa-kun told me.

CHII: Chii is a good girl. Hideki said so.

Ueda opens the door for Chii.

UEDA: Well, then, thank you for your help.

CHII: If Chii leaves, will you be alone?

UEDA: Uh, yeah.

CHII: No one else is working?

UEDA: Actually, there was a girl who used to work here.

CHII: Chii?

UEDA: It's nothing.

CHII: Is it really nothing?

UEDA: Yep, and after the fair ends, would you like to keep working at Chiroru?

CHII: Would Chii like to keep working at Chiroru after the fair ends...? Is it really okay?

UEDA: If you can, of course it's okay.

CHII: Chii will ask Hideki if it's okay!

UEDA: If it's okay with Motosuwa-kun, then every week.... Huh?

Chii glomps him.

CHII: Arigatou, tenchou!!!!

He screams and falls backward.

CHII: Tenchou, are you okay?

UEDA: I'm okay, but don't do that.

CHII: Don't do what? My job?

UEDA: No, I didn't mean your job. Hugging like that.

CHII: Hugging is bad?

UEDA: Hugging is for partners.

CHII: Chii doesn't understand. What kind of partner?

UEDA: What kind...? Someone Chii-chan likes.

CHII: Someone Chii.... Likes.

She remembers the story book.

CHARACTER'S VOICE: But if that person becomes attached to me and me only.... Then it'll be time for the two of us to part.

Hideki enters.

HIDEKI: Konnichiwa!

He sees that Chii and Ueda are on the floor.

HIDEKI: Huh? What happened to you two?

UEDA: Look, he's come to pick you up.

Chii runs over to Hideki excitedly.

CHII: Chii has learned a lot! You call the tenchou "tenchou"! Chiroru is a sweets store! The tenchou is Ueda Hiroyasu-san! But you call him "tenchou"! Tenchou is much taller than Hideki! Tenchou said he wanted me to continue working!

HIDEKI: Wait a second...!

CHII: Please, Hideki! Hideki!

HIDEKI: Okay, just speak slowly, okay?

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki and Chii are walking toward the apartment building.

HIDEKI: I see. He wants you to keep working?

CHII: Yep.

HIDEKI: I'm glad, Chii.

CHII: Yep. Hideki, can Chii work more?

HIDEKI: Sure.

Chii takes the envelope out of her pocket.

CHII: Here.

Hideki looks at the envelope as he walks up the stairs.

CHII: With that....

HIDEKI: Eh?

CHII: With that, can you buy what you want?

HIDEKI: Chii....

He goes into his apartment. Chii closes the dor behind her, and Hideki puts the envelope in her hands.

HIDEKI: This belongs to Chii.

CHII: Chii?

HIDEKI: Chii worked for it, so Chii can buy things with it.

CHII: Hideki doesn't want money?

HIDEKI: It's not that I don't need it, but....

CHII: "But"?

HIDEKI: I'm happy that you want to help me.

He pats her head.

HIDEKI: Arigatou.

CHII: Chii.

HIDEKI: You can go shopping with what's in there, and you can buy something you like.

CHII: Something Chii likes?

HIDEKI: Something you want.

CHII: Hideki.... Is it okay for me to hug you?

HIDEKI: W.... Why do you ask all of a sudden?

CHII: Is it okay?

HIDEKI: Yeah....

She hugs him.
