Chobits Episode 06 - Chii is in Trouble

OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Let Me Be With You"

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii is sleeping. She opens her eyes.

CHII: Chii?

She looks at the glare of sunlight from the window.

HIDEKI: Are you awake, Chii?

She turns to look at him.

CHII: Chii.

Hideki brushes his teeth.

HIDEKI: This room sure is bright in the morning. We really need to get some sun-filtering curtains.

TITLE SCREEN

CHII: Ohayo, Hideki.

HIDEKI: All right! It looks like you know your greetings now, Chii.

CHII: I learned a lot more, too. Hideki taught me.

She points at various objects.

CHII: Light fixture.

HIDEKI: Right.

CHII: Television.

HIDEKI: Right!

She points at his breakfast.

CHII: Side dish.

HIDEKI: That's right!

She points over at some of his dirty magazines.

CHII: That's a side dish, too.

Note: Fansubber notes that "okazu" means "side dish," while "oukazu" means "female model." This is going to be a running joke....

HIDEKI: Well, yeah.... I guess that's true....

CHII: Not a side dish?

HIDEKI: You're not exactly wrong, but....

Chii looks sad.

HIDEKI: What's wrong, Chii? You seem a little strange today. Are you feeling sick or something?

CHII: "Feeling"? Chii hasn't learned about feelings yet.

HIDEKI: Let's see.... It's like your head hurting. Or having an upset stomach. Or your chest might be in pain.

With each example, he shows an appropriate facial expression. Chii pulls her bangs away from her forehead.

CHII: Head?

HIDEKI: I guess it isn't your head.

She touches her stomach.

CHII: Stomach?

HIDEKI: That's probably okay.

She puts her hands on her breasts.

CHII: Chest?

HIDEKI: Y.... You don't have to hold them!!

Shinbo knocks on the door.

SHINBO'S VOICE: Motosuwa, I have things to do today so I'm leaving early, okay?

SUMOMO'S VOICE: Later!

HIDEKI, to himself: I wonder what Shinbo is up to.... Damn it! I should've asked him about Chii! Oh, well, I can ask him at cram school. Ah! I'm going to be late if I don't hurry up!

*** Later ***

Hideki has finished his breakfast and is now running water over his dirty dishes. Chii is sitting against the wall. He walks over to her.

HIDEKI: Gomen ne, Chii. I have to go to cram school now. I'll ask Shinbo about you, and come back home right after my part-time job.

CHII: Itte rashai.

Hideki looks at the clock. It's 8:30.

HIDEKI: It's almost time.

He opens the door to leave.

HIDEKI: I'll be back as soon as I can. Stay here until I get back.

He leaves.

CHII: Chii.

*** Street ***

Hideki runs out of the building, but goes back to his mailbox when he notices a letter stick out of it. Hibiya is sweeping nearby.

HIDEKI: It's the bill.... For the phone and electricity.... And I don't get my paycheck until Friday....

HIBIYA: Motosuwa-san, ohayo gozaimasu.

HIDEKI: Ohayo gozaimasu!

He leaves, and Hibiya grins.

*** Classroom ***

SHIMIZU: During the reign of Shogun Ashikaga, guns were introduced, which greatly impacted the balance of military power and brought an end to that era. Nobunaga then opened the door to a modern economic era....

Hideki is out in the hallway. He peeks in the door, and tries to sneak in by crawling behind the back row of desks.

SHIMIZU, cheerily: If possible, I'd like you to close the door, Motosuwa-kun.

HIDEKI: Aggh!

He stands up hurriedly.

HIDEKI: O.... Ohayo gozaimasu!!!!

Shimizu looks at her watch.

SHIMIZU: It's not very early anymore.

HIDEKI: Ahhh, sumimasehn!! I'm late!!

He bows. Shimizu points out the door.

SHIMIZU: Go run ten laps around the playground.

HIDEKI: Oh...?

SHIMIZU: Hurry up!

HIDEKI: Hai!

He runs off down the hallway. Shimizu pokes her head out the door.

SHIMIZU: No, no, I was just joking!

HIDEKI: Oh? Really?

SHIMIZU: There's no playground at cram school. I like your innocent obedience, though!

She hits his forehead with her fist, then pushes his nose with her finger. Hideki blushes.

SHIMIZU: I'll forgive you this time.

She goes back into the classroom.

SHIMIZU: Go back to your seat. We're going to continue studying really hard!

HIDEKI: What? I thought you forgave me!

Shinbo watches Hideki sit down.

SHINBO, amused: What have you been doing since this morning? You were really late. Did something happen?

HIDEKI: That's right, I have to ask you about something later....

SHIMIZU: Motosuwa-kun, page 43 in your textbook!

HIDEKI: Uh, hai!

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii is still sitting on the floor.

*** Cram School ***

Hideki and Shinbo are walking down the hallway.

SHINBO: Eh? There's something wrong with your persocon?

HIDEKI: Yeah, but there wasn't anything wrong yesterday. But ever since she woke up, she hasn't been responding well.

SHINBO: It's like she caught a cold or something.

HIDEKI: Ohhh, I wonder if I did something wrong....

SHINBO: Have you been recharging her?

HIDEKI: Huh?

Shinbo sighs.

SHINBO: I guess not.

HIDEKI: "Recharging"? You mean she doesn't do it herself?

SHINBO: Persocons are electrically charged, electrically. Did you think they'd go off and eat without their owner's permission or something?

HIDEKI: I see....

SHINBO: She's a persocon, after all.

HIDEKI: H.... Hai.

SHINBO: And you haven't been taking your persocon outside, have you?

HIDEKI: Well, during the evenings I'm busy with work. Telling Chii to do things on her own makes me worry. Having her buy underwear certainly didn't go well.

SHINBO: Sumomo.

She climbs up onto his shoulder.

SHINBO: Inform Motosuwa about recharging persocons.

SUMOMO: Aye! Understood desu!

She displays a screen of people and their persocons outside.

SUMOMO: Every persocon has a built-in solar power system and recharges itself with it. This allows them to replenish their energy while performing daily outdoor activities. However , in cases where a persocon is unable to recharge for a long time....

The screen shows a cloudy day.

SUMOMO: You use this power cord!!

She pulls a cord out of the side of her head.

SUMOMO: Persocons usually have them in their ears.

HIDEKI: I see, in the ears....

SHINBO: Now that I think about it, you don't have an adapter, do you?

HIDEKI: Uh, no.

Shinbo rummages in his duffel bag.

SHINBO: What amperage does she need.

HIDEKI: I don't know.

SHINBO: You'd better be careful. If you make a mistake while recharging, things'll get really messed up. You'll be fine since I'll lend you mine. Oh, here it is. Here.

He hands Hideki a small black device.

SHINBO: So, anyway, recharge her and if it doesn't help I'll take a look.

HIDEKI: I don't know how to repay you, Shinbo. This is a real help. Arigatou!

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii falls over.

*** Street ***

HIDEKI: I wonder what I'll do about my part-time job.... But I'm really worried about Chii.... I wonder if I can get the day off today....

YUMI'S VOICE: Motosuwa-senpai!!

She runs up to him.

YUMI: Senpai, senpai, I finally caught up.... It's a good thing we didn't pass each other by. I ran all this way.

HIDEKI: Yumi-chan?

YUMI: Senpai, you're coming to work today, right?

HIDEKI: Uh, yeah, about work....

Suddenly, he blushes.

HIDEKI: Come to thing of it, this is the first time I've seen Yumi-chan in her school uniform.

YUMI: Senpai? So this is your first time seeing me in my school uniform?

HIDEKI: Um, me?! I talked out loud again?!

Yumi giggles and twirls around.

YUMI: My school uniform is really popular!

HIDEKI: Ummm, about work today....

YUMI: Oh, yeah, about work! One of the workers who was supposed to come in today can't make it. You're working today, right?

HIDEKI: Uh....

YUMI: I had club today, too.... Workers never get good treatment. Senpai, let's go in together and complain.

Hideki chuckles and follows her down the street.

HIDEKI, thinking: I can't say it! I can't say I want the day off!

*** Yorokonde Tavern ***

A customer enters.

TENCHOU: Welcome! Have a seat in the back. Counter 7, two people coming in!

YUMI: Yorokonde!

HIDEKI: Right this way.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Chii is lying on the floor. It's almost 5:30. She sits up and watches a man in a brown suit come up the front walk, checking his watch.

*** Yorokonde Tavern ***

YUMI: It was really crowded today. Good work, senpai!

HIDEKI: Yumi-chan, too. See you later!

YUMI: H.... Hai. Oyasuminasai!

Hideki runs home, panting.

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki enters.

HIDEKI: Chii, tadaima-

He sees her spawled out on the floor.

HIDEKI: Chii!

He runs over to her and picks her up.

HIDEKI: Chii, are you okay? Chii?!

She opens her eyes.

CHII, softly: Hideki!

HIDEKI: Tadaima, Chii. There's nothing to worry about. I'm going to recharge you right away.

He pulls a cord out of her ear.

HIDEKI: All right, everything's set. Let's go, Chii!

He plugs the cord into the adapter on the wall. It sparks and fizzles. The lights in the apartment go out.

HIDEKI: Ehhhh?!

EYECATCH

HIDEKI: What is this?! What just happened?!

He crashes around the apartment as Chii lies on the floor. He tries the light repeatedly.

HIDEKI: It's not a power failure, is it?

He touches the adapter.

HIDEKI: This couldn't have caused it, could it?!

He unplugs the adapter.

CHII: Hideki.

He gasps. Chii sits up.

CHII: Okaerinasai.

HIDEKI: Chii....

He puts his hands on her shoulders.

HIDEKI: Chii, are you okay?

CHII: I'm okay.

HIDEKI, thinking: Calm down, think about it!

SHINBO'S VOICE, in past: If you make a mistake while recharging, things'll get really messed up.

HIDEKI, thinking: The breaker! The cicuit breaker must've tripped!

He lays Chii on the floor.

HIDEKI: Stay right here. I'll get you back to normal.

He flips the switches on the fuse box.

HIDEKI: Huh? Why isn't it working? If I do this, shouldn't it activate? Is it broken somewhere?

*** Hallway ***

Hideki pounds on Shinbo's door.

HIDEKI: Shinbo! Shinbo, are you sleeping? Shinbo! [to himself] He must not be back yet....

He pounds on Hibiya's door.

HIDEKI: Hibiya-san! It's Motosuwa! I'm sorry to disturb you so late! Hibiya-san! [to himself] Even Hibiya-san isn't here....

*** Hideki's Apartment ***

Hideki picks up the phone.

HIDEKI: I have to call someone. Since Shinbo is out, I guess it'll be Kokobunji. Or maybe Yumi-chan. Huh?

The phone has no dial tone.

HIDEKI: Could it be...?

He takes a piece of paper out of his pocket.

HIDEKI: Oh, no! The telephone bill was due by today! So the reason the lights aren't working even after releasing the breaker is...!

He takes another piece of paper out of his pocket.

HIDEKI: As I thought! Anyway, I need a phone! Wasn't there a public phone around here somewhere...?

He shakes out the change from his wallet into his palm.

HIDEKI: This is all?

Chii points to his wallet.

CHII: Wallet. Wallet.

She points to his backpack.

CHII: Bag. Correct?

He takes her hand.

HIDEKI: Correct. Very good, Chii.

CHII: Chii has learned a lot. Hideki taught me....

HIDEKI: It's all right, you don't need to talk any more!

He sits her up, and she collapses against his chest.

HIDEKI: It'll be okay. I'll take care of this somehow. I'll do something as soon as possible. So you don't need to talk anymore.

*** Street ***

Hideki runs down the street with Chii on his back.

HIDEKI, thinking: There are usually people at Yorokonde until 2 o'clock. There must be someone left!

Chii starts to slip off his back, and her breasts push into Hideki's back. He blushes and stops running.

CHII: Uh?

HIDEKI: Iee. Hold on tight, Chii.

CHII: Chii.

HIDEKI: All right, let's go!

He starts to run again. After a while, he stops to pant, and Chii nearly slips off his back.

CHII: Chii is heavy?

HIDEKI: You're much lighter than when I found you. Oh, if I cut through here, we'll be really close!

He starts to cut through a park, but come to a sign that says "Sorry for the inconvenience. This road is under construction."

HIDEKI: Construction? Oh, no. No time to think! Let's see, which way is it...?

He runs down an alley, and looks around. Hideki walks up to a city map.

HIDEKI: Let's see, if I'm here.... Go left from the post office.... Then go around from there....

He continues running.

HIDEKI: That building...! We did it, Chii! Yorokonde is right over there!

He looks at her, but her eyes remain closed. He walks up to a very steep embankment.

HIDEKI: I don't have time to go around. Chii?

She opens her eyes a little.

HIDEKI: If we climb over this, we'll be there. Chii, are you in pain?

CHII: Chii, not in pain.

He clambers up the embankment, using the spaces between the blocks as handholds. Panting, he stands up at the top.

HIDEKI: We did it! Chii, we did it!

There is a cracking sound, and he loses his balance. As he falls, he grabs Chii and shields her. He hits the ground hard. Chii opens her eyes.

CHII: Hideki.

HIDEKI: Chii.... Are you okay...?

He sits her up. There is a beeping and whirring sound. It stops.

HIDEKI: Chii! Hey, Chii? Chii! Are you okay? Pull yourself together! Chii! What's wrong?! Chii! Just wait, I'll get you over there!

He strains to lift her.

HIDEKI: What? She's heavy again! Damn!!

A woman approaches.

WOMAN: Motosuwa-san?

Hideki looks up.

HIDEKI: Hibiya-san!

HIBIYA: Hai.

HIDEKI: How come...?

HIBIYA: I saw someone fall down when I looked out my window, so....

HIDEKI: Window?

HIBIYA: Hai. The taxi window.

*** Hibiya's Apartment ***

Chii is lying on the floor, plugged in to the adapter.

HIDEKI: So you were on your way back?

HIBIYA: I'd planned to come back earlier, but.... I got involved in a lot of things.

HIDEKI: It's really helpful that you came. If you hadn't passed by, I'd have....

HIBIYA: Nah, you're giving me too much credit.

HIDEKI: It's not too much. In the end, Hibiya-san saved me. I'm very glad.

CHII: Hideki.

HIDEKI: Chii?

She opens her eyes.

HIDEKI: Are you okay, Chii?

CHII: Hideki....

HIDEKI: I'm glad. Everything's okay now. We'll have to thank Hibiya-san properly later.

Chii reaches up and touches Hideki's cheek.

CHII: Warm. Hideki is warm. Very warm. Chii, happy.

HIDEKI: Chii.

He touches her bangs. Hibiya smiles.

Shinbo is walking up the front walk. He groans sleepily.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: Arigatou. I'll repay you for the electricity I used.

HIBIYA'S VOICE: Oh, no, you don't have to.

HIDEKI'S VOICE: Please, I'll feel guilty.

*** Hibiya's Apartment ***

HIDEKI: I can't keep depending on you, Hibiya-san.

HIBIYA: Well, let's leave it at that, and....

There is a knock at the door. Shinbo enters.

SHINBO: Hey.

HIDEKI: Huh?

HIBIYA: Oh, okaerinasai.

SHINBO: Motosuwa, what are you doing?

HIDEKI: Recharging Chii.

SHINBO: Recharging...?

He walks out to the hallway and looks at the meter. It's whirring insanely.

SHINBO: What's this?! Hey, Motosuwa! The electricity meter is moving really fast!

HIDEKI: Really fast?

SHINBO: At this rate, it looks like it's going to pass the big two digits!

HIDEKI: Are you serious? Do persocons really use that much electricity?

SHINBO: Iee, taking up this much is really rare.

HIDEKI: Sumimasehn. I'll pay back the electric bill as soon as I can. Can you wait until the end of this month?

HIBIYA: Iee, it's fine about the bill. Other than that, what about this month's rent?

HIDEKI: Ah! Now that I think about it, the rent...!

HIBIYA: Hai. I haven't received any for this month.

HIDEKI: As soon as I get my paycheck, I'll take care of it. I'm really sorry!!!!

CHII: Chii?

HIDEKI: I'll definitely pay you back by Friday!! Even if it takes my whole life, I'll definitely do it!!!!

HIBIYA: You don't need to worry about it so much. It doesn't really matter when you pay it back....

HIDEKI: No, I can't do that! I'll pay the electric bill, and then the rent as soon as possible!

CHII: Chii...?
