Chobits Episode 05 - Chii Finds
OPENING THEME MUSIC: "Let Me Be With You"
*** Classroom ***
Shimizu is standing at the front of the classroom. The board behind her (partially blocked) reads: "Listen, can I..... a... a pe..... That depends...... Are you a good....... I can hold my....."
SHIMIZU: That's it for today! By the way, we'll be taking the Mogishiken this Sunday.
Note: The fansubber kindly informs me that the Mogishiken is a standardized test for Japanese students-- Kinda like the SAT or ACT in the USA.
SHIMIZU: Is everyone ready? This test will show your strengths so you'll be able to set your goals accordingly.
She erases the board and smiles.
SHIMIZU: Everyone, this test is very important so make sure to do your best! By the way, if you score poorly, I'm going to give you a spanking!
Everyone laughs.
MALE STUDENT: Sensei, no one's going to worry about that!
SHIMIZU: I'm looking forward to it! See you later!
She leaves.
STUDENT: She sure is a lot of fun.
HIDEKI, to himself: That's right, the Mogishiken is coming up soon....
TITLE SCREEN
*** Yorokonde Tavern ***
Hideki is wiping off a table.
HIDEKI, to himself: I get the day off tomorrow, so I can spend time concentrating.
YUMI: Senpai!
He turns around.
HIDEKI: Yumi-chan!
YUMI: I heard senpai talking to himself.
Hideki hangs his head.
HIDEKI: I have to do something about this habit.
YUMI: You said you were going to concentrate, but on what?
HIDEKI: Studying.
YUMI: Studying?
HIDEKI: I'm taking an exam the day after tomorrow. I'm taking the day off tomorrow to study.
YUMI: Taking the day off? Are those exams really that hard?
HIDEKI: It rates my current level of knowledge, so it's an important test. But the cram school's lessons are hard, and it's hard to keep up....
Hideki imagines himself sitting at a desk, crying, as textbooks fly past him. He then imagines himelf in his Yorokonde jacket, carrying trays and grinning.
HIDEKI: And right after a hard day's work, I go straight to bed. That's why I'm going to take tomorrow off to concentrate!
YUMI: I see. Senpai, ganbatte!
Hideki blushes.
HIDEKI: Yumi-chan.... Arigatou! I feel a little awkward.
The tenchou comes through the sliding door behind them.
TENCHOU: All right, we're opening up!
HIDEKI and YUMI: Yorokonde!!
*** Hideki's Apartment ***
Hideki enters.
HIDEKI: Tadaima.
CHII: Chii! Hideki, okaerini!
She runs over and hugs him.
HIDEKI: Tadaima, Chii.
CHII: Chii, chii!
They both grin. Hideki's backpack falls to the floor, and his books slide out.
CHII: Chii?
He bends down to pick them up.
HIDEKI: Oh, these are my textbooks from cram school. They're very important for studying.
CHII: "Studying"?
HIDEKI: Studying is when you learn about something you didn't know before. And it's easy to say it, but it's actually pretty hard.
CHII: Studying is.... Hard?
HIDEKI: Yep! I need to study really hard tomorrow. So Chii will have to help me.
CHII: Chii...?
*** Morning ***
Hideki has laid out all his textbooks. He rolls up his sleeves and picks up a pencil. The screen behind him says, "LET'S STUDY."
HIDEKI: All right!! Let's do it. Let's see....
He starts to study. Chii watches him. Hideki frowns, then shakes his head.
HIDEKI: No, I won't give up!
He goes back to studying, then pauses to think. He rests his chin on his fist thoughtfully. Chii copies him.
HIDEKI: Hmmm....
CHII: Chii....
He throws himself on the table.
HIDEKI: It's no use.
Chii throws herself on the table.
CHII: Chii.
HIDEKI: No, no, I have to keep trying.
Hideki starts to write again. He sighs and pounds his head with his fists.
HIDEKI: I don't get it!
Chii copies him.
CHII: Chii!
Hideki stands up and starts to do stretching exercises. Chii copies him.
HIDEKI: One, two, three....
CHII: Chii, chii, chiii....
HIDEKI: All right!
He sits down and continues to write as Chii copies him.
CHII: Chii, chii, chii.
Hideki closes his book and stretches.
HIDEKI: I can't say it's perfect yet, but that's enough for now.
CHII: Chii!
HIDEKI: Now it's time for English.
He opens his English textbook and immediately frowns.
HIDEKI: I'm really not good at this.
He holds up the book.
HIDEKI: And the textbook is so thick! But this is my only barrier left....
He glances at the clock. It's 11:54.
HIDEKI: If I can finish half of it before dinner, I'll somehow manage to finish the rest before tonight.
He clenches his fist.
HIDEKI: All right!
He starts to work.
HIDEKI: Le't see.... "Respect"? What was "respect"? Dictionary, dictionary....
He digs through his stack of textbooks.
CHII: Chii, chii!
HIDEKI: Chii, we're not playing.
CHII: Chii?
HIDEKI: I'm trying to find my dictionary.
CHII: Chii.
Hideki goes over to his closet and opens it.
HIDEKI: Come to think of it, I haven't seen my dictionary since I moved in. Let's see, which box haven't I opened yet...?
He rummages around in the closet.
HIDEKI: It seems like I've avoided English a lot.
CHII: Chii?
HIDEKI: Let's see, dictionary, dictionary.... Huh? Wait a minute! Not here, not here!
He digs frantically in the closet.
HIDEKI: It's not here at all! My dictionary...! I left it back home. How horrible!
He pounds his fists on the floor.
HIDEKI: Why didn't I realize it until now?!
Chii copies him.
CHII: Chii!
Hideki rolls across the floor, and Chii follows.
HIDEKI: How am I supposed to study like this?! I can't believe myself!!
CHII: Chii! Chii!
Hideki cries.
*** Tokyo ***
Hideki and Chii are walking down the street.
HIDEKI: What was I thinking in the first place? I really can't believe myself.
They go into a bookstore, and Hideki takes a dictionary off the shelf.
HIDEKI: This is it!
He looks at the back cover. It's ¥2910, which is about $22.40.
HIDEKI: Dictionaries are pretty expensive!
He checks his wallet.
HIDEKI: Oh, well, at least I can study now. All right, let's go study English!
He walks away. Chii doesn't follow.
HIDEKI: What's wrong?
CHII: Chii.
She walks over to him.
CHII: Chii.
HIDEKI: That's right, this is your first time in a bookstore, isn't it?
CHII: Chii?
HIDEKI: This is a bookstore, a place that sells a variety of books.
CHII: "Books"?
HIDEKI: Let's see.... Books are.... Books are thing that have lots of thing written on paper. Amusing things, helpful things, and other stuff.
CHII: Bookstore. Has a lot of books.
Hideki walks away, but Chii stares at a book on one of the shelves. Its title is "The City Where No One Was," and its cover has the outline of city buildings and a night sky. Hideki picks it up.
HIDEKI: Chii, do you want this?
CHII: Chii....
Hideki turns the book over. It's ¥3410, or $26.20.
HIDEKI, thinking: E.... Expensive.... Are picture books really this expensive...? But if I buy this, my dictionary....
He looks over at Chii.
HIDEKI: Then again, my dictionary is...! Maybe....
He looks over at Chii again and sighs, then hands her the book.
HIDEKI: It'll be a present.
CHII: "Present"?
HIDEKI: I'll buy it for you, Chii.
CHII: For Chii?
HIDEKI: Yep. Books can teach you lots of things, just like me.
Chii grins and throws her arms around him.
CHII, happily: Chii!
HIDEKI: You say "arigatou" in times like these.
CHII: Arigatou.
HIDEKI, thinking: Chii is really kawaii.
He glances over at the counter to see that the clerk and some customers are grinning at him.
CLERK: Customer, let's hold the loving until after you buy the goods.
HIDEKI: Oh! Well....
He laughs, then looks over at Chii. She's staring at the book.... Upside down. Hideki turns it over for her.
HIDEKI: Come to think of it, this will be the first time you've read a book.
CHII: Chii? Chii....
*** Hideki's Apartment ***
Hideki and Chii are sitting on the floor, the picture book in front of them.
HIDEKI: All right, Chii, picture books work like this. See this picture right here?
CHII: Chii!
HIDEKI: And over here are the sentences. The pictures and sentences make a story. Oh, about letters....
CHII, reading: "In that city, there was...."
HIDEKI, excitedly: You can read, Chii?
He pats her head.
HIDEKI: You're pretty bright, Chii.
CHII: Chii!
HIDEKI: Well, then, let's hear you read, Chii.
CHII: Chii.
The picture book has an illustration of a cute little.... Person? Wearing pink.
CHII, reading: "In that city, there wasn't even one person."
Shinbo enters.
SHINBO: Hey, Motosuwa! Are you studying?
HIDEKI: Shinbo....
SHINBO: What, are you goofing off again?
HIDEKI: Of course not...!
SHINBO: You always seem to have free time. I was just coming over to encourage you.
HIDEKI: Encourage...?
SHINBO: Sumomo?
SUMOMO: Aye!
She pullls out two miniature yellow pompoms and jumps into Hideki's hands.
SUMOMO: Hooray! Hooray! Motosuwa! Ganbatte! Ganbatte! Motosuwa! Ganbatte! Ganbatte! With your studying!
Hideki shrieks.
HIDEKI: That's right!!!! I have to study!!!! But I don't even have a dictionary....
SHINBO: What happened to your dictionary?
HIDEKI: I left it back home. I can't go any further with my English studying....
SHINBO: I'll let you borrow mine.
HIDEKI: Huh? Really? But don't you need to study?
SHINBO: Oh, I've been reviewing all week so it's no problem, Motosuwa-kun.
HIDEKI: Ehhh, showoff.
SHINBO: Eh?
HIDEKI: Oh, it's nothing, Shinbo-sama!
SHINBO: Well, follow me to my apartment.
HIDEKI: This is a big help.
He starts to leave.
CHII: Chii?
HIDEKI: It's okay, I'll be back soon.
He leaves.
CHII: Chii.
She looks at the character in the book.
Note: These books become important, but the character never really gets a name.... So It'll just be "the character," I guess. ><*
EYECATCH
*** Shinbo's Apartment ***
Shinbo hands Hideki the dictionary.
HIDEKI: Arigatou.
He opens the dictionary.
HIDEKI: Let's see.... "Respect" is.... Oh, yeah, "to show regard for"! Huh?
SHINBO: What is it?
HIDEKI: But how do you conjugate this?
SHINBO: Oh, well....
He and Hideki sit at the table. Shinbo points to a section of the text.
SHINBO: It's right here. It shows you how to use it as a verb and how to use it as a noun.
HIDEKI: I see.... How 'bout as an adjective?
SHINBO: That'd be "respectable."
*** Hideki's Apartment ***
Chii is lying on the floor, looking at the front cover of her picture book. She opens the book.
CHII, reading: "In that city, there wasn't anyone. There were houses, and you could see light shining through the windows. But on the streets, there wasn't anyone."
The illustration show the character walking alone down a street.
CHII, reading: "I looked through a window."
The illustration matches this. In the house, there are two grey silhouettes.
CHII, reading: "There was a person. But he was with 'that.' I looked into another house. As expected, he was with 'that.'"
The illustration shows the two silhouettes smiling, and the character walking sadly down the street.
CHII, reading: "But that's because being with 'that' is fun.... More fun than being with other people. No one is going outside anymore. In this city.... There isn't anyone. I'm going out on a journey. A journey to another city. I hope a person just for me will find me there. But if that person becomes attached to me and me only.... Then it'll be time for the two of us to part."
The illustration shows the character traveling on a road through the night sky.
CHII, reading: "But I still want to meet someone just for me. With that in mind, I travel on to another empty city."
The faucet drips, and the wind blows the curtains in Hideki's apartment. The room goes dark, and Chii glows.
*** Shinbo's Apartment ***
HIDEKI: Right, I'm starting to understand. I can figure out the rest myself.
SUMOMO: Go, let's go, Motosuwa!
HIDEKI: Arigatou, Sumomo.
He walks back to his apartment, carrying the dictionary.
*** Hideki's Apartment ***
Hideki enters.
HIDEKI: Tadaima!
He sees that Chii is glowing and floating a few inches above the ground.
HIDEKI: Chii? Chii? Chii!
He runs over to her and puts his hand on her shoulder.
HIDEKI: Chii? What's wrong with you, Chii?
She stops glowing and sinks to the ground.
HIDEKI: ...Chii?
She looks up at him.
CHII: Chii...?
HIDEKI: Chii, are you okay?
She tilts her head questioningly.
CHII: Chii?
Shinbo and Sumomo are now in Hideki's apartment. Shinbo inspects Chii's ears.
SHINBO: There's nothing visibly wrong.
HIDEKI: Is that so...?
SHINBO: But it is a pretty strange persocon. To be honest, I don't know what's going on. I wonder what could have caused it....
HIDEKI: Even you...?
Shinbo goes to the door.
SHINBO: Don't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it for now. If nothing else happens, it should be fine. After all, she seems to be working properly.
HIDEKI: Arigatou. It's really helpful having you here.
SHINBO: Don't worry about it.
SUMOMO: Fight!
SHINBO: Well, then, good luck.
HIDEKI: Thanks.
Shinbo leaves. Hideki walks over to Chii.
CHII: Hideki, are you all right?
HIDEKI: It's nothing, I'm fine.
Chii smiles cutely. Hideki grins. He looks over at the picture book and flips through it.
HIDEKI: What is this? It looks like complicated reading. Chii, did you read this?
CHII: Chii.
His alarm goes off. It's 7:00.
HIDEKI: It's already time!!!!
The screen behind him says "TIME IS MONEY."
HIDEKI: I'd planned to be halfway finished by dinnertime!!
He rolls around on the floor.
HIDEKI: But I haven't done any work at all!!!!
CHII: Chii, chii!
He pounds his head.
HIDEKI: I have absolutely no concentration!! I can't believe myself!!
He picks up his English textbook, then falls over.
HIDEKI: Even if I start now, I'll never make it in time. English is definitely my worst subject.
Chii holds out the textbook.
CHII: Chii?
HIDEKI: It's all right now, Chii.
Chii stares at him.
HIDEKI: Chii?
CHII: Fight! Hideki, fight!
HIDEKI: Chii?
She smiles cutely.
CHII: Chii!
Hideki grins and takes the textbook.
HIDEKI: Okay, Chii. I shouldn't give up so easily, should I?
CHII: Chii.
After midnight, Hideki is still working. It looks like Hideki is getting frustrated.
CHII: Hideki, fight!
Hideki clenches his fists.
HIDEKI: All right, I'm starting to feel motivated!
CHII: Chii.
He keeps working.
HIDEKI: I don't get it! Chii, help me!
CHII: Hideki, fight!
HIDEKI: All right, I'm not through yet!..... Oh, no, Chii....
CHII: Hideki, fight!
HIDEKI: All right!.... Chii, please....
CHII: Hideki, fight!
HIDEKI: Chii!
CHII: Hideki, fight!
*** Classroom ***
SHIMIZU: All right, time's up! Everyone pass back your papers!
Hideki and Shinbo leave.
HIDEKI, stretching: Ah, I'm so tired.
SHINBO: Where are you going now?
HIDEKI: My part-time job!
*** Yorokonde Tavern ***
Hideki is putting on his jacket when Yumi enters.
YUMI: Ohayo gozaimasu!
HIDEKI: Ohayo gozaimasu!
YUMI: Senpai...?
Hideki gives her the thumbs-up, and she grins.
*** Hideki's Apartment ***
HIDEKI: Tadaima!
Chii hugs him.
CHII: Hideki, okaerini!
HIDEKI: Chii, arigatou.
CHII: Chii?
HIDEKI: My test didn't quite go perfectly.... But I think I'll get an average score.
He holds up the V-for-Victory, and Chii copies him questioningly.
HIDEKI: It was all thanks to you, Chii. Really, arigatou, Chii.
He pats her head.
CHII: Chii!
HIDEKI: Oh, yeah, when I get my next paycheck I'll buy you something. So look forward to it, okay?
CHII: Chii, look forward.
We hear Chii's voice reading from the book as Hideki washes dishes.
CHII'S VOICE, reading: "But if that person becomes attached to me and me only.... Then it'll be time for the two of us to part. But I still want to meet someone just for me. With that in mind, I travel on to another empty city."
