An old fort is home to a number of GEC Z8420 flat glass Mercury lanterns. The lanterns are still in use, as the fort is used as an HGV MOT testing station, so the presence of Mercury lamps can clearly be seen. The Z8420 style could be seen on a few main roads in Plymouth around the 1970s, but the Z8426 bowled design was the chosen variant found. They were all removed by the late 1970s when Thorn Alpha 3s took over using SON lamps. These are the only examples left in the city now.
