A garage is home to a pair of very rare Atlas Alpha 3s. These are the early fore-runners to the popular Thorn lantern seen across the city. These versions are quite different in operating design to the latter ones however. Access to the lamp area is by unclipping the bowl & canopy, and removing it from the shoe in one piece. The Thorn lantern changed this to a hinged bowl design. The lanterns probably date from the early 1960s when the dual carriageway was created and the new river bridge opened.
The pair used to be lit with Mercury lamps years ago, but I haven't seen them lit for a good 15 years. They are in good condition, and there are no signs of any replacement plans.
