Plymouth City Mercury Lighting

Stoke- An 80W MBF/U GEC Z8896 lantern fitted to an AC Ford AC434 swan neck and control box, and mounted upon a cast column. Control is by a Sangamo timeclock in the control box. The gear comprises a GEC Z1640 choke and capacitor. This is typical of the lighting in inner-city back lanes across Plymouth before the inset of SON in the '90s. The lantern, bracket and control box would have been fitted in around 1973 when the original gas lantern was removed. This is now a rare survivor as it's the only example left with a timeclock.

Update- 6th September 2007: the column has been replaced. A new 5m Corus steel column and Urbis ZXU1 lantern have been installed. There is now only one Z8896 left on a cast column in the city, and this has been drilled for a NEMA photocell.
