The Making of Helms Deep

This site is for the adventurous gamers who want to build a scale model of Helms Deep.  This one is for playing sieges as described in Games Workshop's The Two Towers rulebook using their 25mm figures.  Games Workshop built a model of Helms Deep and put tantalizing pictures in the rulebook and their game magazine White Dwarf.

They say they used the same plans that set makers used to make the one in the movie.  Unfortunately, Games Workshop (GW) will not give out any of the dimensions of the model they built.  But I will give you dimensions of the one I built, which is very close to the one they did.  My main outside wall is 36'' in diameter and very playable.   I believe GW's is probably only 30'' or 32'' or whatever is close to that in metric.  Before starting, I would advise that you pick up White Dwarf # 275,276 and 277.  Also The Two Towers  rulebook, which I'm sure you have already or you wouldn't want to make Helms Deep in the first place.

Helms Deep was made very much like GW's and as such is not a cheap one to build…With the exception of the mountain where I made mine from solid foam of one type or another instead of making just a framework and covering it with paper mache, I used much the same materials and construction designs as GW.

All dimensions are in inches!!  I did not label the drawings but just remember...all dimensions are in inches!!!

Materials

1" and 2" pink insulation foam

3/8" styrofoam, I found this in fan-fold sheets about 4' wide and 10' long (there will be plenty left over!) It is in the home insulation construction section of your building supplies stores.

4' X 4' table base, I used 1/4" hardboard with a 1" X 2" framework underneath for rigidity

2' X 4' table extension, this is for the Uruk-Hai deployment zone

3/16" foamcore

posterboard

1/4" x 3/8" and 1/8" x 1/2" wood strips

3/16" or 1/4" wood or something to make the main gate doors from

(4) doll house hinges

3" pvc drain pipe (it measures 3 1/2" on the outside)(for the Hornburg)

3" pvc toilet flange (to set the Hornburg in and out of) (this is optional really, I used it for solidity)(is solidity a word?)

Great Stuff spray can of foam insulation

Liquid Nails for Foamboard Projects

white glue (Elmers)

fine sawdust, really!

Tools needed

hot wire foam cutter, you might get by with a copeing saw but I wouldn't advise  it

razor knife

a small hand saw came in handy

band saw, it would be nice to have, you know you want one anyway (you might even find it usefull on this project)

popsycle sticks to spread glue with ( I refuse to list misc. things like pencils & such)

Terms and construction order/tipsdocument.

Please be advised that the instructions in TERMS1.doc can be very confusing.  Just read things over a few times looking at the scetches and what you are building, I did my best at the time.
