The 2006 Season was one of the greatest seasons of all time. The St. Louis Cardinals pulled of a stunning upset over the favorite Detroit.
The St. Louis Cardinals still look like the favorite to win the NL Central despite the loss of two- thirds of their outfield, Reggie Sanders and Larry Walker. They also have the task to defend their title from last year. The question mark in the NL Central remains the Chicago Cubs. Can the Cubs get Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, and Carlos Zambrano all healthy at the same time? If so, they could be a real contender for NL Central division title. On paper it seems like the NL West has gotten much better this year than last year. The Dodgers added key players like Ex- Brave Rafael Furcal, and Ex- Cub Nomar Garciaparra. Meanwhile the NL West Champions of ’06, the San Diego Padres, added the likes of Mike Piazza and Mike Cameron. The favorite this year to win the NL West seems to be the Los Angels Dodgers due to their powerful lineup and their stellar starting pitching. But of course you can never forget the San Francisco Giants as long as they have Barry Bonds.
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will have new competition in the AL East in 2007 with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays signed two of the biggest free agent pitchers in the past season in AJ Burnett and BJ Ryan. Hopefully Burnett will develop into the pitcher they thought he would be when they signed him to the huge contract 2 offseasons ago. The Boston Red Sox will look for the tandem of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez to carry them to the AL East crown. The New York Yankees still seem to be the favorites to win the division due to having one the best lineup on paper in the major leagues. The Chicago White Sox look to repeat in ’06. With the addition of Jim Thome, the White Sox now have the power bat they have been looking for to go along with Paul Konerko. The Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, and Kansas City Royals will hope their youth can bring them a division title. The AL West seems like it’s between two teams, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and the Oakland Athletics. The Angels may have the best farm system in the league so it will be interesting to see if it plays a major part in 2007. The Athletics will always be in the race due to their young pitchers like Dan Haren, Rich Harden, Joe Blanton, and Houston Street . The 2007 season will be one to remember.
