Lebanon thrashed India 4-1 in the first world cup qualifier in Beirut. Lebanon dominated the match while India did do well in patches. Interestingly, the first goal of the match was scored by India, courtesy Sunil Chhetri in the 30th minute. But there was nothing much to cheer for the Indian fans after that. Antar slammed one back for Lebanon in the 33rd minute. Ghaddhar scored twice for the hosts. This heavy defeat means India will have a tenacious task to accomplish in the home leg. The team had trained in Dubai before this match and no one had expected India to lose this way against a team which is ranked just one place above India.

Yes, the Nehru cup triumph has enabled India to climb up 6 places in the FIFA rankings from 151 to 145. India now ranks 24th in Asia, an improvement from 26. This has come as a pleasant surprise for scores of Indians and lets hope we only get better from here...

Ludhiana, September 15(Federation cup): East Bengal won their 5th federation cup by beating Mahindra United 2-1 here today.Edmilson, the hero of the day netted twice two drive East Bengal home with the 29th Federation cup. The lone goal for Mahindra was scored by Manjit Singh. The first half was the one to watch out for. Both sides were almost evenly matched and the quality of football was amazing.Mahindra's Sunil Kumar was red-carded in the 35th minute. In the second half though, it was different. The game seemed to have been below the standard of that in the first half. The second half saw East Bengal, who were leading with 2 goals to one, getting very defensive and there was only one side that was attacking. All in all, it was a fairly good final and East Bengal team walked out as champions...
scorers:-
KEB: Edmilson Marques (35'-penalty'; 45'+)
Mahindra: Manjit Singh (45'+ penalty)
