Pinay beauty queen on hijacked plane

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed yesterday that the Philippine candidate to the Ms. Globe International pageant was among the passengers of the hijacked plane in Turkey.

In its report to the DFA, the Philippine Embassy in the Turkish capital of Ankara said Jaime Liv Castillo, 23, was one of the passengers on board the plane that was hijacked over Greek airspace. The hijacking, which forced the plane to land in southern Italy, ended Tuesday night.

In a live phone interview with Mel Tiangco on "24 Oras" over GMA-7, Castillo said they were held inside the plane for three to four hours by a lone hijacker.

TWO persons were killed, while 11 others were wounded when a liquefied petroleum gas tank (LPG) exploded in Barangay Basak, Mandaue City yesterday morning.

Most of the victims were just passing by when the tank in Gene’s Laundry exploded about 8 a.m.

The explosion caused a traffic jam that lasted nearly three hours and fueled speculations that it was a bombing attack linked to the anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy or the opening of an international legislators’ gathering in Cebu City.

As part of the civil defense series of drills, Mayor Sammy Co, serving as incident commander, supported tsunami evacuation drills August 17 as it celebrated the 1976 killer-tsunami incident that smashed coastal areas leaving thousand of people dead in the southern part of Mindanao.

The Office Civil Defense (OCD) of region 9 here led the drill conducted in the coastal barangays and after sirens wailed drillers went up along Pajares Avenue as the safety ground within 20 minutes movement.
