To Contemplate the Face of Christ
We are called in the New Millenium to " Contemplate the Face of Christ ". We raise our eyes and heart from a more general contemplation on the Cross to the face of Christ the man. Man of Sorrows. Is this the face that looks down on the Church? Is this the face we are to hold in our minds in the controversy of the hour? Christ crucified. Every day another nail, another thorn from the crown piercing him. Is this the face we hold in our day? Or do we search for the face of Christ in the hidden life of Nazareth when he was still a Carpenter. Do we find him there, mallet in hand carving out one more piece of wood. Is the face we are to see the one who holds children on his lap, reaches to lift
a fallen woman from His feet. Whose face did she see? How much compassion can we find there? Is that how He looks at us, when one more time He restores us to His Presence. Do we see Christ in the eyes of the Father of the Prodigal, in the storm swept
moment before he speaks Peace Be Still. Speaks Peace Be Still to our Lives. Is this our Christ? Or Christ transfigured. Is it the face of the Gardener who says Mary as she recognizes Him as her Lord? Is it the pilgrim traveler of Emmaus breaking bread? Is it the face of the risen Christ calling His friends from their boats to come for Breakfast? When we fall before Him with the tens of thousands of ten thousands praising His name forever and ever singing Hallelujah! Whose face will we see?
Christ tells us that there is a way to see his face now. Here without waiting for Heaven without relying on the hands of an artist. It is a hidden secret and you have to pay very close attention to the quiet of the Contemplation to hear it. Contemplate the Face of Christ. I was naked and you clothed me I was hungry and you fed me I was in prison and you visited me. Find that place of Contemplation in whatever quiet place
you find, hide yourself away to seek His face and when you step out into the light of day the first face, and the next and the one after that will hold a part of Him showing himself to you. Sometimes in joy, sometimes in labour, sometimes in crucifixion we see His face
reflected in the eyes of others we meet in our day. He has not left us alone to guess. He has left us with His Comfort that we can find Him still here with us. Even to the end of the age. Who is your neighbour? Contemplate the Face of Christ.
