In this tutorial you will learn how to create The Earth using Photoshop CS2
Step 1:
Create a new document with a size of 1024x768 (pixels). It is not required, but highly recommended as some of the images provided are optimized for this size.
Step 2: The Background
a)
Make the Background black. Then, go into Filter>Noise>Add Noise... and set to the following:

b)Now, go into Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur... and enter the following:

c) Now, this is a perfectly good starfield, if you want a lot of stars, but we don't (unless you do, in which case you can leave as is)
To reduce the stars, go into Image>Adjustments>Levels... and set to the following:

Then, go into Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast... and set to the following:

c)Duplicate the layer and apply a Gaussian Blur of about 2-4 pixels (I used 2) then set the layers Blend Style to Linear Dodge.
Now, you should have something that looks like this (at 50%):

Step 3: The Earth
This will provide the basic steps into creating The Earth.
a) Copy
this map into Photoshop, then Ctrl+Click on the layer it's created itself. With the image selected, go into Edit>Define Pattern... and call it whatever you want. With that done, hit delete to delete the image, as it's not needed any more.
b) In the layer left over select the Elliptical Marquee tool and, whilst holding shift, create a large circle. (You can rename the layer if it helps you for later editing, but it's not needed) like I've done (at 50%)

c) Select the Paint Bucket tool and set to fill a Pattern, and select the pattern you just created, like so:

Then fill the circle. You should end up with something like this:

d) Now, we need to make it a little more Sphere-like. Go to Filter>Distort>Spherize... and set it to 80-100%
This is the basic shape done. Now, we need to add a Sun. Even though we don't see it in the picture, it will still have an affect.
Step 4: The Light
a) Duplicate the Layer and call it whatever you want. Then go into Filter>Filter Gallery... and select Glowing Edges under Stylize.
Set the width to 1, the Brightness to 6 and the Smoothness to 4. Then click OK. Then, use the rubber tool to erase any whiteness (Such as Antarctica) Finally, place the new layer under the original. So it should be third in position.
b) On the original layer with Earth, go to Filter>Render>Lighting Effects... and set the options as close as possible to the following picture:

Now set the layer's Blend Style to Lighten. You should have something like this:

To remove the stars, create a new layer and place it third in position. Fill it with black. Make sure you have changed it to fill the foreground, not pattern.
Step 5: The Atmosphere
a) Select the layer you just made, and double click the thumbnail. Now select outer glow, with the following settings:

TIP: Colour is #69a0f9
You should now have something like this:

Step 6: The rest
There isn't much left to do now!
a) Using the Transform tool (Ctrl+T),move all the layers, apart from the background ones to a position like this one:

b) Now, select the Elliptical Marquee tool and make a selection like this one:

Now, with the selection in place, create a new layer with the third layer selected and set the feather to 250px. Then keep filling the selection until you reach something like this:

c) Now, this is the last step, unless you want to do anything with it afterwards.
Create a new layer and place it on top. Press Ctrl+A and fill with black. Then select Filter>Render>Lens Flare... and use the following settings:

TIP: Drag the cross into position.
Then change the layer blend mode to Screen.
And you're finished!

Feel free to add anything else to it.
