Phoenix Equine Rescue, is a organization  ( were working on getting non-profit status) that specializes in rescuing
abused, neglected and unwanted horses from their hostile and
sometimes unlivable conditions.

This organization is committed to providing a safe
haven for as many of these horses as we can.
These horses mostly consist of slaughter bound
horses and horses at risk of going to auction.

We are also a committed Networking source working hand
with other rescues to raise awareness, fundraise and ultimately
save as many horses as we can.

Our goal is to encourage the community to
join us in our efforts as we educate them about
horse care and ways to help our beloved equines.

I got the name "Phoenix" from the first slaughterbound horse my family and I ever saved. He was a flea bitten Arabian and came with a buddy "Dakota". She was an Appaloosa with a beautiful blanket. I was only about 10 but I remember my mother, grandmother and I going to this mans house to take at look at them.  The were standing in a VERY small paddock filled with all kinds of barn animals. I remember them looking sad, and thinking I wanted to take them home. My mother suggested I try riding, as we were told, phoenix was the lead pony and Dakota was the follower. I rode them down a trail leading into the woods, my family behind me talking to the dealer. We rode down the trail with Dakota right on our tail. He rode great! But I couldn't help but notice that Dakota wouldn't take a step that Phoenix didn't take first. I told my mom that I wanted to take them home, and like a good parent, she said "well see". I hated leaving them there and my thoughts stayed with them until we all "went for a ride"  the following day. We went back to the dealers and there they stood, in front of a trailer. They were coming home with us :) I remember the dealer loading them , slapping Phoenix on the butt and saying " Your lucky, you were gonna be steak tomorrow" That was my first encounter with a dealer, and certainly not my last... Turns out Dakota was on her way to being totally blind and phoenix was her "seeing eye buddy" .She would follow him around everywhere, and he wouldn't take a step with out making sure she was right at his side. They had a many good years, and got lots of love.  They were special to me, and I will always remember them as part of my personal mission, to help as many horses destined to the horrible fate of Slaughter..
