Horse News

HE CAN'T OUT-RUN CONGRESS!

Dear Readers,

The West's wild horses still need our help.

Texas' two horse-slaughtering plants have just scored a legal victory. They will stay open unless Congress shuts them down. This is not the only bad news.

Most of you know that between Thanksgiving and Christmas last year, a law (the Burns Amendment) passed Congress and was approved by the President. The law said the Bureau of Land Management had to capture wild horses and sell.

Since then:

  • 41 wild horses died terrified deaths and were made into meat for humans.
  • Congressmen Nick Rahall and Ed Whitfield proposed HR 297, a bill to cancel the Burns Amendment and protect mustangs.
  • Sixty-six congressmen co-sponsored HR 297
  • The bill was given to a committee of Congressmen to study and discuss

Now, people in Washington tell me that the committee -- which has 20 members, only 5 of whom are co-sponsors of HR 297 -- don't want the bill to be voted on. HR 297 could "die in committee."

Many of you called and wrote to your Congressmen (if you haven't,
here's how to contact Your Government Representatives). Your Congressman may have promised to vote to save the horses. If the bill dies in committee though, your Congressman will be robbed of a chance to vote.

What should we do? For a start, let the members of that committee know they are not invisible.

  • Email or call the five members who have said they'll vote to save the horses (I put a star next to their names! ) and tell them THANK-YOU!
  • Write to the other committee members and tell them to save the West's wild horses

Here is a list of the members of the committee which has HR 297 right now.

When you click on their email addresses, you'll be taken to forms where you can enter comments. Some Congressmen only accept comments from people in their states. When you run into those, if it's not your state, just go back to this list and keep trying.

It takes a bit of patience and can be frustrating, but I can tolerate hours of frustration if it keeps wild horses from being dragged into those factories.

How about you?

What should you say when you call or write to the committee members?

Consider these ideas:

  • The West's wild horses are a national treasure and belong to all Americans.
  • Two million wild horses once roamed the range. Now there are about 30,000.
  • 22,000 wild horses are being held in BLM corrals until Congress decides whether they will live or die
  • BLM has been ordered by Congress to capture thousands more wild horses NOW
  • 39 million tax dollars are used each year to trap wild horses. Is that how you -- or your parents -- want tax dollars spent? Why not use that money to help victims of Hurricane Katrina?
  • On the range, cattle outnumber wild horses 100-1. If some rangelands are over-grazed, the horses don't deserve all the blame.
  • Some Congressman have said the West's mustangs are starving and deformed. The vet who inspected the slaughtered horses said they were "roly-poly" and healthy.

For more information, check out The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign.

I know the horses would thank you if they could, but our voices are the only ones they have.

Sincerely,

Terri Farley

Here's what PHANTOM STALLION readers have already done.

It's important people learn that the wild horses are in danger. Very soon, I'll announce guidelines for a contest to reward students, teachers and librarians who educate the public on America's wild horses.

YOU WON THE FIRST BATTLE!

Dear Readers:

Thanks to your calls to your representatives, the bill NOT TO FUND horse slaughter was approved in the House of Representatives . 249 voted in favor and 159 opposed the vote. There were 25 Representatives who did not vote.

This amendment stops funding to the 2006 BLM's budget that would allow horses over the age of ten sold without limitations and those animals not adopted in three adoptions. However, the law is still in place.

We still need H.R.297 and S 576 to pass in Congress to restore the Wild Horse Annie law! But you've shown Congress the whole world is watching what they do to America's wild horses!

Did your Congressman stand up for the horses?
Check here and see.

NEVER TO GALLOP AGAIN!

Dear Readers,

I am sad to tell you that six wild horses have been killed under the new law you've been fighting. The mustangs were purchased from BLM on April 15 by an Oklahoma man. He claimed to be a minister. He said he'd use the horses in a program for troubled teens. He lied. Instead, the wild ones were immediately sold to Cavel International, a horse slaughter house in DeKalb, Illinois. They were killed with metal bolts into their foreheads and have already been shipped away for human consumption. Under HR 4818, this is totally legal.

You probably know some senators supported HR 4818 because Senator Conrad Burns told them wild horses were starving on the range. The veterinarian who examined the six mustangs before they died declared them "healthy and roly-poly." The same vet notified BLM of the horses' deaths, but there is nothing BLM can do, until the law is changed.

As I was typing this letter to you, I was notified that 35 more wild horses have died a terrified, painful but legal death at the Cavel International slaughterhouse. Only America's lawmakers can keep this from happening again. If people don't care enough to make phone calls or write emails, the mustangs' thrilling neighs and galloping hooves will stop in sudden silence. You know the horses would thank you if they could.

Sincerely,

Terri

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO TO HELP THE HORSES?

Express your thoughts about these horses being slaughtered. Ask lawmakers to stop the slaughter of America's wild horses and support HR 297 and S 576.

Contact Senator Byrd and offer thanks and support.

Contact your own Senator and ask him/her to support S.576.
Locate your Senator here

Contact your Congressman and urge him/her to cosponsor H.R. 297.
Locate your Congressman here

Contact Senator Reid and thank him for taking the time to read your letters and urge him to support S. 576

Contact Congressman Gibbons, give him your ideas and urge him to support HR 297

Children persuaded Congress to save the wild horses in 1971.

You can help it happen again!

What's this all about?

Dear Readers,

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Congress and the President approved a law which says all wild horses over ten years old shall -- not may -- be sold to the highest bidder for any purpose, including slaughter for pet food, or human consumption. This applies to all "unadoptable" horses which haven't found homes after three tries.

You have the power to save the wild horses!

Sincerely,
Terri Farley
