Basic Care & Requirements
Housing
Steppe lemmings are escape artists and as such should be housed in a glass or plastic tank as the bars on standad hampster cages are too wide
As lemmings are a social species they should never be housed alone they do best in pairs or a group altho fighting may occure if there is a problem with over crowding or housing too many males to females
My lemmings are housed in a smaller indoor rabbit cage with a 6" deep mix of wood shaving and hay for them to dig and nest in
Diet
It is thought that the steppe lemming is sugar intoerant and prone to diabetes as a result they should not be fed anything with a high sugar content
As part of my diet i use a guinea pig food, fresh veg, millet spray, fresh grass and hay
Handling
Sexing

female
Male steppe lemmings are easily distinguished by the prominent bulge of the testes also the anal-genital gap is around double the width in the male as the female
